UW System Board of Regents meets at UW-Green Bay on Thursday, Friday
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents takes to the road this week, leaving its usual meeting place in Madison for a trip to the UW-Green Bay campus. The 17 Regents and other officials from across the UW System will convene at UW-Green Bay for a series of meetings this Thursday and Friday (April 6 and 7). Committee meetings begin Thursday at 1 p.m., and the Friday meeting of the full Board of Regents begins at 9 a.m. Most meetings will be held in the University Union. A news release about the Regents' meetings is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#regents.

An opportunity to showcase UW-Green Bay
The Regents' meetings will feature numerous presentations highlighting the host campus. UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard will present "Northeastern Wisconsin's Growth Agenda for UW-Green Bay" to the Business, Finance and Audit Committee. Other presentations will focus on UW-Green Bay's emphasis on "Connecting learning to life" and on the University's second-ever long-range Master Plan. The Regents also will have an opportunity to attend UW-Green Bay's annual Academic Excellence Symposium Thursday morning. Agendas for the meetings Thursday and Friday are available online at http://www.uwsa.edu/bor/. If you can't attend the meetings, listen to a live Webcast at http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/.

Regents' visit 'puts UWGB in spotlight'
So says the Green Bay Press-Gazette in a front-page story in the newspaper's Sunday (April 2) edition. The Press-Gazette story, written by higher education reporter Kelly McBride, quotes Regent Judy Crain of Green Bay as saying, "Just to be on campus, and to be on the home turf, so to speak, gives the regents a much better sense of this place and the university's presence in the community." To read the story, click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060402/GPG0101/604020636/1207.

Thursday and Friday bring parking changes to Visitor Lot
During the Board of Regents meeting this week the Visitor Parking Lot will be closed as follows:
• Thursday, April 6, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Friday, April 7, from 6 to 11 a.m.
Approximately 30 parking stalls in the Sports Center parking lot will also be unavailable during this time.

Sneak peak at Symposium
Reminder: If you'd like an advance look at the range of exhibits at the fifth annual Academic Excellence Symposium, a complete list of projects, as well as some visual material, is archived at http://www.uwgb.edu/lasdean/aes/.

'Racialization of Urban Space' is Hutchison's Oxford lecture
UW-Green Bay Prof. Ray Hutchison will lecture on "The Racialization of Urban Space" at 11 a.m. Thursday (April 6) in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall Room 103. The phenomenon of neighborhoods dominated by a single ethnic or racial group — Harlem in New York, Little Havana in Miami, or Little Saigon in Orange County, Calif. — is often seen as negative, says Hutchison, but he will discuss positives, as well as the influence of community residents and urban planners. The Oxford Lecture Series event is patterned on a practice at Oxford University in England where the public is invited into the classroom. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#lecture.

Youngsters tackle advanced topics at UW-Green Bay History Day competition
Some 255 middle and high school students from across the region will gather at UW-Green Bay this Saturday (April 8) for the Northeastern Wisconsin Regional History Day competition. The students have spent weeks and months honing original projects on the theme "Taking a Stand in History" in hope of being selected to advance to state and national competition. Judges on Saturday will evaluate projects on themes ranging from Jesus as a feminist to the bombing of UW-Madison's Sterling Hall during anti-Vietnam War unrest and from the discovery of penicillin to the artist Andy Warhol. One group will present a documentary on an area ladies aid society who determinedly raised the money in the 1920s and '30s to rebuild their burned church. Several projects deal with issues surrounding the death penalty in Wisconsin.

History Day expands with prizes
For the first time at the UW-Green Bay History Day contest, competitors may win prizes, according to coordinator Debra Anderson. The Wisconsin Council for Labor History, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and the Brown County Historical Society are donating prizes for outstanding projects in particular subject areas. The Northeastern Wisconsin Regional History Day competition at UW-Green Bay has grown to become the largest regional contest in Wisconsin. For the full story, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#historyday.

UW-Green Bay Pow-Wow on April 8 has special musical guest
The annual Pow-Wow at UW-Green Bay will be from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 8 in the Phoenix Sports Center. Grand entries are scheduled at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Spirit Bear will be the host drum group, with Str8 Across serving as co-host. Invited drums include Nanapowe, Niwiwan, Medicine Rock and Wind Eagle. Special guest Wade Fernandez, a musician, songwriter and recording artist who has performed with Jackson Browne and the Indigo Girls, will perform during intermission. For full details, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#powwow.

Sunday piano recital by Moritz offers Nietzsche, variety
Faculty pianist Benjamin Moritz will perform in recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9 in Fort Howard Hall of the Weidner Center. Moritz will open the program with several preludes and fugues from Bach, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, and continue with two compositions by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, whose music is only recently being increasingly performed. Moritz did his dissertation research on Nietzsche's music and thought and recently gave a lecture recital on Nietzsche's music at New York University in an event sponsored by the Nietzsche Circle, an organization for which he serves on the advisory board. Works by a Turkish composer and a transcription of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Favorite Things" round out the program. Full details at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#piano.

Alegria caps visit with Tuesday talk on 'Quality of Life in the Andes'
Julio Alegria, director of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Services Project (SANBASUR) in Cusco, Peru, will talk on "Improving the Quality of Life in the Andes" at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, April 4) in the University Union. It's the last public event in the month-long visit for the Peruvian rural development specialist sponsored by the joint St. Norbert College-UW-Green Bay International Visiting Scholars Program. He gave a public lecture at St. Norbert College in March. Alegria leaves for home on Thursday.

Peruvian visitor has had a busy month
One of the surprises of Julio Alegria's visit to Green Bay had to be receiving the key to the city at last week's City Council meeting. The invitation to the meeting came about as a result of a chance introduction to Council President Fred Graves. Prof. Emeritus Bob Wenger also received a key. In addition to meeting with many classes at St. Norbert College and UW-Green Bay and a couple of public school visits, Alegria has toured the Green Bay Water Utility-starting from Lake Michigan-and the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District. Prof. Emeritus Bud Harris provided a tour of the Green Bay watershed, Prof. Emeritus Paul Sager was host for a tour of the Door County peninsula, and Prof. Emeritus Jack Day took the visitor to the Madison area. Other invitations gave Alegria a look at Northeastern Wisconsin from Sheboygan to the Marinette-Menominee area.

Illinois artist's lecture is rescheduled to April 10
Laurie Hogin, associate professor of painting and chair of the Painting and Sculpture Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present a lecture on her work at 3:30 p.m. Monday (April 10) in the Christie Theater. The lecture was rescheduled from March 6 when a snow storm prevented Hogin from traveling to Green Bay. Salon.com says Hogin uses the language of advertising dressed in the style and technique of 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting "in order to make scathing visual comment on contemporary consumerism, sexism, the trashing of nature and the inequities of the global economy." Hogin's appearance is being presented by the Art program with support from the Interim Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Prof. al-Atiyat will introduce film by Palestinian director
Fulbright Scholar Ibtesam al-Atiyat will be the presenter for a special showing of "Rana's Wedding" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 at the Brown County Library. The 2002 film by Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad, shot on location in East Jerusalem and Ramallah, has won several awards including the 2003 Nestor Almendros Award for Courage in Filmmaking at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York. The romantic drama is about a woman who wants to get married to the man of her choice and has only 10 hours to locate her boyfriend in occupied Jerusalem. The showing is sponsored by the Green Bay Film Society and UW-Green Bay.

Fleurant, French food and more... tickets now on sale
Tickets are now on sale at the Union Information Center for the April 27 Cultural Cuisine luncheon at the University Union. Brief
Michael Stearney, assistant dean for enrollment and academic services, presented at the 88th National Conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in Washington D.C. He co-presented with Megan Habermann, a UWGB alumnus from the class of 2004. The presentation was only one of 300 selected from over 850 program proposals submitted on the basis of creativity, innovation, solid information, and new thinking. The title of the presentation was "360° Feedback: Multi-source Performance Feedback Basics for Managers and New Professionals." 360° Feedback is the process of inviting performance feedback from the "full circle" of people with whom a person regularly works. Through discussion, demonstration and case study review, they examined the basic elements of this process, reviewed electronic tools for collecting, organizing and reporting feedback, and shared results of 360° feedback pilot projects at two institutions.
