Don't miss it: MAC Hall winter garden has never looked better
Reminder: The fifth annual Academic Excellence Symposium — a most-impressive array of projects and exhibits by UW-Green Bay's top students — is now under way and continues through noon today (Thursday, April 6) in the winter garden atrium on the second level of Mary Ann Cofrin Hall. Traffic thus far has been brisk.

News conference at 11:30 focuses on UW, technical college partnership
UW System President Kevin P. Reilly and Wisconsin Technical College President Daniel Clancy will announce developments related to a joint effort of the public higher education systems at a news conference this morning at UW-Green Bay. Reporters are invited to attend event at 11:30 a.m. in the University Union. The initiatives follow the recommendations of a joint working group known as the Committee on Baccalaureate Expansion. For more, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#initiatives.

'Space art': a great snapshot of interdisciplinarity... and bold imagery, too
The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium presented scholarship awards to two art students (Darci White and Daniel Klewer) for space-related artwork located permanently in the Consortium's offices in Suite 301 of the Environmental Sciences building. For nice snapshots of this arresting example of interdisciplinarity, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

Candidates with UW-Green Bay ties make big news with Election Day wins
Wow! Just barely into his 20s, UW-Green Bay senior Adam Warpinski was apparently born to politics. (Or, he had the benefit of having an unpopular, incumbent opponent.) In any event, the political neophyte won an astounding 86 percent of the vote in his district and a seat on the Brown County Board. Also a winner in the April 4 election was Celestine Jeffreys, who became the first African American ever elected to the Green Bay City Council. The spouse of Prof. Derek Jeffreys, her community activism won her recognition earlier this academic year as an outstanding UW System Woman of Color.

For election coverage of these interesting stories, see:

Newspaper profiles Green Bay Regent Judy Crain
A recent Green Bay Press-Gazette article profiled Regent Judy Crain, who says it's important that higher education opportunities are available and affordable for everyone who seeks them. Click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060405/GPG0101/604050653/1207/GPGnews.

Smoke billowing across the bay? Damn phragmites
All the questions Tuesday about the huge clouds of black smoke rising from Longtail Point across the bay are answered in the following link. It was a controlled, DNR-approved burnoff of invasive grasses. Interesting story at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060405/GPG0101/604050652/1207/GPGnews.

Hutchison on 'Racialization of Urban Space'
Reminder: UW-Green Bay Prof. Ray Hutchison lectures on "The Racialization of Urban Space" at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, April 6) in MAC Hall Room 103, as part of the Oxford Lecture Series. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#lecture.

UW System questions idea of consolidation of food service deals
A UW System review suggests that consolidating campus food-service contracts (an idea being run up the flagpole elsewhere) could not only negatively impact the quality of meals, but also, potentially, lose money. See AP coverage at http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/14234998.htm.

Embattled former dean resigns his position on Whitewater faculty
Former UW-Whitewater dean Lee Jones, who founded a national group to help black men move up the ranks in academia, has resigned from his faculty position, citing "blatant racism and constant harassment." UW-Whitewater Chancellor Martha Saunders said racism played no role in Jones's dismissal from his dean position. See http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/W/WI_UW_ADMINISTRATOR_WIOL-?SITE=WIMIL&SECTION=STATE&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2006-04-04-21-18-02.

'Events like Pub Crawl give UWO a bad reputation'
That's the headline over a nicely worded column in the UW-Oshkosh student newspaper. While UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Petra Roter concede they have no direct control over the way private businesses run drink specials and market to college students, they portray "irresponsible drinking" as a communitywide issue requiring responsible action by all involved. See http://www.advancetitan.com/story.asp?issue=11225&story=4949.

'Friends' present 'Wisconsin & the Black Hawk War'
Based on his novel, Battle in the Heart of America: Wisconsin and the Black Hawk War, Kerry Trask, professor of history, UW-Manitowoc, will delve into the violent conflict between the prosperous Sauk Nation and envious white American settlers in 1832. The presentation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in MAC Hall 208. The event is free and open to the public, although donations are welcome.

House for summer rental
Need a place for the summer? Catherine Henze is renting her house on the bay at 2987 Circle Shore Drive. The three-bedroom home is located just a half-mile from campus. Rent is negotiable and children and pets are welcome. It will be available May 15 or June 1 through August 2006. Contact Henze at 509-322-7968 or henzec@uwgb.edu.

Bump, set, donate blood
Phoenix volleyball players and other student athletes are among those arranging a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday (April 11) in the Niagara Rooms. To sign up, e-mail tescln12@uwgb.edu or walk up. A chance to win a year's supply of Papa John's pizza is also part of the deal.
