Chancellor, UW-Green Bay unveil ‘Growth Agenda’
n a packed hearing room in the UW-Green Bay University Union, Chancellor Bruce Shepard today (Thursday, April 6) unveiled “Northeastern Wisconsin’s Growth Agenda,” a plan that would enable UW-Green Bay to meet the demands and needs of a rapidly growing and changing region. The proposal, announced at a meeting of the Board of Regents’ Business, Finance and Audit Committee, would increase state-supported enrollment by 50 percent. See the news release at
http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#growth.htm
Didn’t see Thursday’s presentation? It’s on-line here
Chancellor Bruce Shepard’s illustrated slideshow presentation to the Regents, along with the text of his accompanying remarks, are archived at the “Northeastern Wisconsin's Growth Agenda” site at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/growthagenda/index.htm
Snapshots: UW-Green Bay’s Day 1 at the Regents
Bruce Shepard received overwhelmingly positive feedback for the “Northeastern Wisconsin Growth Agenda for UW-Green Bay.” Sue Hammersmith and colleagues had an involved, attentive audience for “Connecting Learning to Life.” Dean Rodeheaver and grad students presenting the Master Plan had Regent Jesus Salas compliment them on being the first campus to include students in such a presentation. All in all, a good day. For snapshots, go to http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/06regents.htm
How did Regents react to ‘Growth Agenda’? Check coverage of Regents Day 1
If you have ever read the UW System News Office’s synopses of Regent Meeting activities, you know they are almost as good (or even better?) than being there in person. All the quotes, color and detail are captured in very lengthy and detailed fashion. It’s a lot to wade through, but all the info is there, especially regarding Regent reaction to the “Growth Agenda”, at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060406b.htm
Snapshots: Student researchers, artists shine at Academic Symposium
Did you miss the impressive display of student research, art and scholarship available for viewing Thursday morning in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall. Click here: http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm
News conference: State commits $500,000 to help UW, WTCS push degrees
That news conference today on campus involving the presidents of the UW System and Wisconsin Technical College Systems? It was the announcement of $500,000 in state funding for seven innovative programs aimed at expanding the number of Wisconsin citizens who hold four-year college degrees. (For those in the know, this is the COBE deal.) One of the initiatives gaining support is the proposed NEW ERA Bachelor of Applied Studies Degree, of special interest at UW-Green Bay. See the UW System release at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060406.htm
Must-see TV! But first, an apology…
A formal apology from the LOG News editor: Every month in this space, you are accustomed to reading a snarky, snippy, smart-alecky reminder about the regularly-scheduled webcast of the UW System Board of Regents meeting… typically accompanied by a sarcastic “WARNING: DON’T OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY WHILE VIEWING” or “TiVo it if you can’t watch it live!” or “Tune in, and double their ratings.” Clearly, these editorial comments were unfair, and wrong. Watch the next one, and you are sure to find it lively and informative, with familiar figures in starring roles.
Must-see TV: ‘UW System Board of Regents: Live from Green Bay!’
The Board of Regents meeting will be webcast from UW-Green Bay this Friday, April 7, from approximately 9:00 a.m. until noon. A link to the webcast can be found at http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/
Best alternative: in-person
The full UW System Board of Regents meets at 9 a.m. Friday (April 7) in the Phoenix Room on the second level of the University Union. Come one, come all! The centerpiece of the agenda will be a community panel presentation involving supporters of UW-Green Bay.
Good work has water flowing again
Regent tours to campus might have included the UVHI Desert (inside) or Lake Residence Life (outside) if not for some nice work by campus maintenance staff and Holtgers Bros. Utility Contractor of De Pere. The main water line in the Residence Life complex broke not once, but twice this week, but patient residents and hard-working crews, says Director Glenn Gray, dealt with the difficulties in professional fashion.
Mayan visitors from Guatemala are on campus this week
Mr. Florencio Hipolito Cali Jiatz and Mrs. Lidia AjquiJay de Cali are visiting UW-Green Bay from Tecpan (Guatemala). Both are Katchiquel Mayan and they will be giving a series of presentations on Mayan indigenous cultures in several classes. Their visit also includes presentations at local Green Bay schools, and community engagements. Their visit has been possible through the partnership and generous contribution of the American Intercultural Center, First Nation Studies, Humanistic Studies, Social Work Program and Spanish Academic Program.

Reminder: ‘Meeting Student Needs’ on April 11
Greg Smith, Nora Kanzenbach, and Lynn Niemi will be discussants for the “Food for Thought” meeting on Tuesday, April 11. The title of their discussion will be, “The challenge of meeting students’ needs.” The Food for Thought meeting will be held in Alumni Room B, at 12:30 pm and last for about an hour or so. Organizers send this special message, as well:
“It’s all about learning! The Food for Thought discussion is a great opportunity to meet informally with colleagues to exchange ideas, discuss experiences, develop new strategies, etc. First and foremost, however, the discussion is about learning! So for anyone interested in student learning, this is a great opportunity to more deeply explore related pedagogical issues and concerns.”
