Shepard thanks Regents for growth vote
Chancellor Bruce Shepard expressed his gratitude to the Board of Regents for its inclusion of the Northeastern Wisconsin Growth Agenda in approving UW System's 2007-09 budget. "The Regents clearly understand our region's need for a larger UW-Green Bay," Shepard said. "We appreciate the support of the Regents and the many community leaders who have been advocates of this much-needed initiative." Chancellor's talk, newcomers, Founders Awards are highlights
The popular and annual Faculty and Staff Convocation takes place this Wednesday morning (Aug. 23) in the University Union. Continental breakfast begins at 8:15 a.m. in the Nicolet Dining Room. The program starts at 9 a.m. in the Phoenix Room with a welcome from the new SOFAS, Prof. Cliff Abbott. Highlights will include remarks by the Chancellor, introduction of newcomers, and presentation in seven categories of Founders Association Awards for Excellence. (Award-winners won't be announced until Convocation, but we've seen the list, and it's a terrific group. See you there.)

Reminder: Ice cream social is 3:15 p.m.
New employees close Wednesday's full day of introductions and orientation with an ice cream social from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. at the Union's Nicolet dining room. All faculty and staff members are invited to stop by, introduce themselves, add to the warm welcome, and enjoy a cool cone.

Also Wednesday is a 'Conversation with Teaching Scholars'
From 1:30 to 3 p.m. this Wednesday (Aug. 23) in Phoenix C of the University Union, an all-star lineup of UW-Green Bay Teaching Scholars will informally share the results of their teaching and learning projects. The conversation will touch upon common teaching challenges including fostering productive class discussion and critical thinking, working with groups, maximizing the reflective potential of students, and designing courses that meet learning objectives.

Presenters and discussion leaders include:
Clif Ganyard  •  Terri Johnson  •  Mark Kiehn  •  Steven Kimball  •  Pao Lor  •  Rebecca Meacham  •  Jason Nice  •  Amy Wolf  •  Derryl Block  •  Andy Kersten  •  Nicole Meyer  •  Kim Nielsen  •  Cristina Ortiz  •  Sandy Stokes  •  Patricia Terry  •  Dean Von Dras

You're invited. To learn more about the Teaching Scholars program (co-directed by Profs. Denise Scheberle and Regan Gurung), and this year's projects, visit the Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/uwgbSoTl/.

On Thursday, Friends of the Cofrin Library host anniversary reception
Celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Friends of Cofrin Library takes place this Thursday (Aug. 24) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of, naturally enough, the Cofrin Library. The free, informal reception is open to Friends, prospective Friends, former Friends and any all friends of the University. Stop over for desserts, jazz guitar music, and casual conversations. There will be a brief program at 7:45. There was an RSVP deadline, since passed, but you can still probably talk your way in by emailing motkowsc@uwgb.edu or calling 465-2383.

Poster says: You have entered the Wireless Zone
CIT has created posters with eye-catching graphics to bring attention to several important technology resources on campus. Look for new posters identifying:

• kiosk stations
• wireless access areas, and
• computer teaching labs that are available for students to use between classes.

Please refer to the CIT Web site for more information and a look at the symbols: http://www.uwgb.edu/compserv/labs/newsigns.htm.

Campus Life group wins grant to bring 'Black/White' stars to campus
The Campus Life Diversity Programming Task Force, chaired by Lisa Tetzloff, has received a $1,500 UW System Race and Ethnicity Grant in support of the upcoming program "Black. White. On Campus." The program brings to Green Bay two participants from last spring's highly publicized FX Network reality show, "Black. White," which featured two families who experienced living in each others' skin through elaborate race-changing make-up, dialect coaching, and other adjustments. The "moms" will share their experiences and answer questions at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, in the Phoenix Room of the University Union.

'Human Mosaic' schedule returns for a second year
Faculty and staff will soon be receiving the "Human Mosaic" brochure promoting a wide array of campus diversity programs for the fall. The "swapping races" experiences from the FX show "Black. White" (see previous item) is only the start. Other events include Tres Vidas, a musical dramatization based on the lives of three legendary Latin American women; "The Game of Life," a life-sized version of the popular board game; and "Murderball," a documentary film about the highly competitive world of quadriplegic rugby players. For more info on these events and other upcoming diversity programs, contact Student Life at 2200 ext. 40 or osl@uwgb.edu.

It's plain: In the main, the game in Spain is no pain
The UW-Green Bay men's basketball team had a pleasant time of it in winning its first exhibition game on its 10-day tour of Spain. For a game recap and sophomore forward Mike Schachtner's online journal, click http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/mbb/081906.asp.

Heavy play for Shorewood 75th
Shorewood Golf Course received heavy play over its three-day diamond anniversary weekend. (The course was celebrating 75 years since its founding in August 1931.) While the Shorewood Amateur scheduled for Friday was cancelled for a lack of entrants, overall rounds played were way up, with nearly 750 golfers taking advantage of the weekend's anniversary specials.

AP: Regent budget holds line on tuition, but seeks additional GPR
The UW System Board of Regents voted last week to approve a 2007-09 biennial budget request that would yield the lowest requested tuition increases in a quarter-century, while also putting in place measures to increase the number of four-year college degree-holders in the state. It would require an increase in taxpayer funding. Here's how the Associated Press describes the developments: http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/local/15300233.htm.

'Learn from UW software debacle'
The State Journal newspaper in Madison says the UW System should be allowed to move on after a $26 million misstep, but only if System administration takes steps to avoid similar mistakes in the future. Click http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/opinion/index.php?ntid=95631&ntpid=3.

Civic engagement conference is October in Minneapolis
Our friends at Wisconsin Campus Compact remind us that registration remains open for the conference "Campuses Are Citizens: What's Your Story?" taking place this October 12 and 13 in Minneapolis. It's designed to share stories of civic engagement on campus. Online registration is available at http://www.123signup.com/calendar?Org=mncampuscompact.

Correction... and coverage of Wolff ceremony
Fire protection for the UW-Green Bay campus is provided by the Green Bay Fire Department. For that reason alone, we should have taken more time to proofread Thursday's edition of the LOG. The lead-in included a typo in the name of fallen firefighter Lt. Arnie Wolff. After-the-fact coverage of the community's moving, final farewell to Wolff is online at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060819/GPG0101/608190465/1207.

Briefs
Prof. Emeritus Bud Harris of Natural and Applied Sciences has received a letter of appointment to serve as a public member of the Special Committee on the Great Lakes Water Resources Compact. The bi-partisan, 18-member committee is chaired by state Sen. Neal Kedzie to help shape Wisconsin's official position on ratifying or rejecting a new water compact proposed by an alliance of Great Lakes governors. The committee's first meeting is Sept. 7 at the state Capitol.

Peter Kretche, network system administrator for CIT, was among a select group of state of Wisconsin employees honored last Thursday (Aug. 17) at a reception in Madison hosted by Gov. Jim Doyle. Kretche received a certificate of commendation for his leadership as a Red Cross shelter director in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The governor thanked state employees who had delivered "vital assistance and specialized disaster relief services" during Katrina, Rita and Wilma along the Gulf Coast, and during the destructive Stoughton and Viola tornadoes in Wisconsin.

David Kieper of Computing and Information Technology earned thank-yous this summer for his volunteer work with young people. The Bay-Lakes Council of the Boy Scouts of America recognized Kieper and other leaders for their service at summer scout camp.

Prof. Ellen Rosewall presented a paper entitled "Managing Arts Management: Collaboration in the creation of an online course" at the D2L Users Conference in Toronto in July. The same presentation was presented by one of her collaborators at the MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) conference in Ottawa in early August. Rosewall and four arts management colleagues from UW-System schools are finishing a year-long project to create an online arts management course which was funded by a grant from the UW-System Learning Technology Research Council.

Chancellor Bruce Shepard is among the Northeast Wisconsin notables helping promote the One Book, One Community campaign. A "Caught Reading" poster features the Chancellor with a copy of this year's selection, Of Beetles and Angels, an immigrant's memoirs by Mawi Asgedom. Discussion groups are scheduled throughout the fall.

Mike Stearney, assistant dean for enrollment and academic services, served as external evaluator for the Student Support Services Program at the College of the Menominee Nation. Stearney conducted site visits of the newly funded program each of the last four summers, evaluating various components of the program and providing recommendations to improve program services, meet federally mandated outcomes, and assure compliance with federal regulations.
