UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 37, No. 64, Feb. 2, 2006     /     Log Archive

Hey, we're not going anywhere near the brouhaha over church-and-state and whether a holiday greeting should be secular or sacred, or whether Groundhogism is in fact fun folklore or superstitious myth. We'll just express our wish that everyone had a happy, healthy Feb. 2 and that sun and shadow play out in each of your lives as the great furry forecaster sees fit. Here's today's issue of the LOG News:

Miron named general contractor for Kress Events Center project
Miron Construction Co. Inc., Neenah, has been selected as the general contractor for UW-Green Bay's new Kress Events Center project. Miron previously was the general contractor for renovations to Laboratory Sciences and an addition to the Weidner Center. Also announced today was the selection of Elmstar Electric Corp., Kaukauna, as the electrical contractor for the Kress Center project. Site preparation has already begun. Galt photo exhibit opens Feb. 6
Anthony Galt, professor of Social Change and Development and chair of anthropology, passed away on Dec. 10, 2005. His wife Janice, son Alex and daughter-in-law Linda will be presenting a photo exhibit featuring as many as 100 of Tony's beautiful Wisconsin scenes at Kavarna Coffeehouse, 112 S. Broadway in Green Bay. The public is invited to view the exhibit from Monday (Feb. 6) until March 11.

Campus mail for Thornton can be sent to Adult Degree Programs or MAC C332. Thornton is Associate Provost for Outreach and Adult Access. As such, she oversees the office of Outreach and Extension that remains in Wood Hall and is directly supervised by Assistant Director Barbara McClure-Lukens; Adult Degree Programs in MAC Hall with whom she is now housed; the Small Business Development Center located at the Business Assistance Center adjacent to the NWTC campus; and the Downtown Learning Center in Washington Commons.

Levin-Stankevich: In Eau Claire, that's the name to know
Brian Levin-Stankevich, interim president of Eastern Washington University, has been recommended as the next chancellor of UW-Eau Claire. The recommendation on Levin-Stankevich, announced today, will be acted upon by the full UW System Board of Regents next Friday, Feb. 10. Tune in Thursday night for big Butler game
The UW-Green Bay men's basketball team (11-11, 5-5) continues its challenging stretch of four out of five games on the road and five games in 10 days as it plays at second-place Butler tonight (Thursday, Feb. 2) with tipoff at 6 p.m. Central time. Tonight's game can be heard live on WDUZ 107.5 FM. Live stats, an audio webcast and video streaming can be accessed at http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/mbb/gameday.

BracketBuster foe is announced: the FDU Knights
UW-Green Bay men's basketball team has received its non-conference matchup for Saturday night, Feb. 18, at the Resch Center. About 100 teams from the "mid-major" ranks were asked to hold the date open until ESPN played matchmaker and announced the dozen or so televised games earlier this week. (The Phoenix did not get one of the TV games.) The idea of ESPN's BracketBuster weekend is to showcase solid mid-level teams that don't otherwise get big national exposure. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/mbb/013106.asp.

Phoenix women are for real; host UW-M in showdown on Saturday
The UW-Green Bay women's basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit to earn a win in a 73-63 victory over Detroit Wednesday night at Calihan Hall. The victory stretches the Phoenix win streak to 11 straight games, the fifth-longest active streak in the country. UW-Green Bay improves to 16-3 overall and 9-0 in the Horizon League. Next up for UW-Green Bay is a home matchup with second-place UW-Milwaukee this Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center.

Borseth's team is a hot ticket
Three of the final four UW-Green Bay women's basketball regular season home games have sold out, athletics ticket director Marilyn McCarey announced this week. The sold-out games include Saturday, Feb. 4 versus UW-Milwaukee, Saturday, Feb. 11 versus Loyola and Saturday Feb. 18 versus Detroit. Tickets remain only for the Thursday, Feb. 16 meeting with Youngstown State at 7 p.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center. Call the UW-Green Bay athletics ticket office for more information (920) 465-2625.
