Local officials among first to earn emergency management certificates
The Emergency Management, Planning and Administration Certificate program has graduated its first class. To scan the list of certificate-holders — professionals in positions of responsibility with the Red Cross, a major employer, local government, emergency response units and others — is to get a true feel for the course. Campus sponsors are the Office of Outreach and Extension, the Environmental Science and Policy graduate program, and the Public and Environmental Affairs academic unit. For more on the graduates, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006july.htm#emergrads.

Arabic language course draws early interest
With all the news emanating from the Mideast, these days, we were motivated to inquire whether the new course on the Arabic language was drawing interest. It is. A total of nine students have signed up for fall semester 2006. Openings remain, but that's a promising start for a first-time offering. Know anyone who might be interested? There's background at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive37/2006april27.htm#language.

Prof. Kaye gets big thumbs-up from local newspaper
The editorial page of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, in its Monday roundup of picks and pans, cites the recent news of additional honors for Prof. Harvey Kaye's book on Thomas Paine. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060724/GPG06/607240474/1269/GPGopinion.

Traffic accident claims 2001 UW-Green Bay grad
The recent death of Aaron Bieberitz, 31, who graduated from UW-Green Bay in 2001 with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Information Science, is being mourned in circles beyond campus and his hometown of Sheboygan. A software developer, Army veteran and competitive cyclist, Bieberitz was killed when his bicycle was struck by a vehicle during a road race near Holy Hill. CyclingNews.com carried a story at http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2006/jul06/jul20news3.

Newspaper explores UW enrollment history, Madison's 'selectivity'
The most-viewed item on Sunday's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Web site was a lengthy story recalling the history of UW System enrollment management, or at least the current era which has roots in the late 1980s. Big changes today involve out-of-state enrollments (increasing), and the 65-percent acceptance rate for Wisconsin applicants (decreasing). See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=475513.

Flags will be at half-staff on Tuesday
Flags will fly at half-staff at all state of Wisconsin facilities on Tuesday, July 25, as a mark of respect for Sgt. Travis Van Zoest, a Wisconsin resident who was serving with the 188th Air Defense Artillery, Army National Guard. He was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 6.

Story says Badger, Gopher officials generally OK with reciprocity
A recent Associated Press story says officials with the Wisconsin Higher Education Aids Board and the state of Minnesota are generally happy with a current tuition reciprocity agreement. See http://www.madison.com/archives/read.php?ref=/wsj/2006/07/22/0607210643.php.

'Conspiracy Theories 101'
The prominently opinionated academic Stanley Fish weighed in on the Kevin Barrett flap at UW-Madison in a column contributed to the New York Times. The issue, argues Fish, is being needlessly muddied. As long as Barrett stops short of partisan indoctrination (recruitment to his cause) and conducts himself as a professional educator, critics on both sides are missing the point.
