UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 37, No. 132, July 31, 2006     /     Log Archive

On these dangerously hot days, health officials are constantly warning us to take it easy, drink plenty of fluids and check frequently on older people to make sure they're OK. So far, so good, at least on this corner of the 8th floor. Today's newsletter (only a half dozen items) wasn't too strenuous, we just hit the water fountain a few minutes ago, and on the way back we strolled past colleague Dan Spielmann's office. Everything's cool. In news today:

NASA space walker visits camp
Professors talk expertly on media matters
AP report: Mismanagement sank Lawson
PSC is site of St. Mary's/Prevea program for female athletes
Reminder on this week's power outage
Credit Union warns of cashier's-check fraud

NASA space walker comes to Green Bay for this week's camp
This week's Space Experience Camp offers teen campers a week filled with rockets, robotics, and space flight simulations. A big event Tuesday (Aug. 1) is an appearance by NASA astronaut Dr. Tom Jones, who has logged more than 1,200 hours in space and 19 hours of spacewalking. He'll speak to enrolled participants at mid-morning in the Rose Hall auditorium.

UW-Green Bay faculty experts weigh in on media matters
A story in Sunday's edition of the Green Bay Press-Gazette quotes Blair Chair Timothy Meyer, professor of communications, as saying the Wisconsin gubernatorial election will be a down and dirty fight, if early advertising is any indication. Music Prof. Terence O'Grady is quoted extensively in a story noting the 25th anniversary of the cable channel and pop-culture phenomenon, MTV. Click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060730/GPG04/607300369/1250/GPGlife.

Associated Press tells tale of mismanagement in Lawson project
Newspapers around the state are running full and abridged versions of the lengthy Associated Press news story about the crash and burn of the $26 million Lawson software project. For the full report, click http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/news/politics/15147258.htm.

Selections from a private consultant's report are archived at http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/news/politics/15147271.htm.

PSC is site of St. Mary's/Prevea program for female athletes
UW-Green Bay's Phoenix Sports Center will be the site of a free program, Performance Enhancement for the Female Athlete, next Monday, Aug. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. Steve Myrland, former Badgers strength and conditioning coach, will share tips on proper exercise and training. Free consultation with Prevea licensed trainers, and SPARQ analysis — Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, Quickness — are additional features. Female athletes, coaches, parents and phy ed teachers are invited to participate. The St. Mary's Bone and Joint Center is accepting reservations at 498-4684.

Reminder on overnight power outage, on Friday morning
The Instructional Services building, Environmental Sciences building, and Laboratory Sciences building will be without normal power for about four hours beginning at 12 a.m. Friday (Aug. 4). As a result, campus data servers will be powered down beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday and remain off-line until after 7 a.m. Friday.

Credit Union warns of cashier's-check fraud
Branch Manager Muriea Jaeckels of UW Credit Union shared the following a while back, and it's worth repeating here:

Cashier's-Check Fraud
There was a time when a cashier's check or money order was considered "guaranteed money." As Bob Dylan would say, "The times, they are a changin'."

Fraudulent Cashier's Checks
Criminals are using sophisticated techniques to counterfeit cashier's checks and money orders. You don't find out until later — after the item is returned as counterfeit. Protect your accounts by being aware of the warning signs.

Warning Signs
• A cashier's check amount is more than the purchase amount.
• "You won!" phony lottery check is sent to you.
• The item is purchased by someone other than the one you're dealing with.
• A check has misspelled words or is printed on flimsy paper.
• You received a request to "convert" a casher's check into a personal check — you can "keep the extra amount" for your efforts.

Protect Yourself
• Confirm the person's name, address, and phone number using directory assistance.
• Insist on a check from a local financial institution.
• Call the institution to verify that the check is valid. Use your phone book — don't call the number on the check.
• If suspicious, wait 2 weeks before using those funds.
• For Internet purchases, use a reputable online escrow service that will hold the payment until the promised goods arrive.

To protect yourself from fraud, be sure to stay informed of emerging scams. The UW Credit Union, for example, routinely communicates new fraud schemes in its newsletter, Web site, and in alerts to its online banking users (along with news, tips and links to reporting agencies) at www.uwcu.org.
