Vol.
37, No. 119, June 12, 2006 / Log
Archive
Today (Monday, June 12), as the institution implements an upgraded version of anti-spam software, we hope Sunbelt’s “Messaging Ninja” didn’t re-route this particular note into too many quarantine files. Incidentally, if Ninja is such a good, fierce name, what’s next? The Message Mujahideen? The Freedom Fighter Filter? Or the Spamish Inquisition? (Potential motto: “Nobody expects the Spamish Inquisition!”). With apologies to Monty Python, we herewith bring you the news:
• FOCUS wraps up
• Postcard from Florence
• Regents talk holistic admission
• UW System to seek more student aid
• Student fees get Board's attention
• Walsh, Bradley are re-elected
• National survey: i-Pods, more than beer
• Doyle throws down Summer Challenge on fitness
• Reminder: fire inspections
• Service-learning groups plan September forum
• Big loan deadline
FOCUS R&R enters Week II
The FOCUS-Registration and Resources program enters Week Two today and continues Tuesday and Wednesday. Student Affairs reports that, on each of these days, the campus will host as many as 500 students, parents and guests. IDs, course registration, helpful pointers for students and parents, and a resource fair are central activities. Look for a photo gallery by mid-week.
Postcard from Florence
The weather is pleasant, the art is spectacular and things are going well for UW-Green Bay art students studying the classics in Florence, Italy. The international course was organized by Profs. Christine Style and Sarah Detweiler. There’s a snapshot at
http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/06summflorence.htm
‘Holistic Admission’ practices get airing at Regents meeting
The UW System Board of Regents devoted much of its meeting last Friday (June 9) to discussion of new, so-called “holistic” admissions practices. The idea is to adequately evaluate a wider range of factors to predict whether a student will be successful. There’s a good overview of the discussion at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060609.htm#heading2
P.S.: Regents will request more student financial aid
A followup to Friday’s Regents meeting: Regents vowed to request significant increases in state financial aid as a way to help offset the burden of rising tuition on low- to moderate-income families. See http://www.madison.com/archives/read.php?ref=/wsj/2006/06/09/0606090007.php
Student fees get Board’s attention
Members of the UW System Board of Regents agreed last week they would generally like to see more student involvement and a fine-tuning of the segregated-fee setting process. Click http://www.madison.com/archives/read.php?ref=/wsj/2006/06/08/0606080002.php
Board re-elects Walsh, Bradley
Regents voted unanimously Friday to re-elect David Walsh of Madison as President and Mark Bradley of Wausau as Vice President for a second consecutive term. For more, click http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060609.htm#heading5
National survey: i-Pods, alcohol use are ‘in’
Maybe the methodology and message aren’t the greatest, but a nationwide
survey of what’s “in” on college campuses is interesting reading
nonetheless. USA Today carried a story about Student Monitor’s
biannual survey at http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2006-06-07-ipod-tops-beer_x.htm
Doyle throws down ‘Summer Challenge’ on fitness
The Wisconsin Governor’s 2006 Summer Challenge is a FREE statewide physical activity challenge for Wisconsin’s residents. This award program is designed to help you make and keep a commitment to regular physical activity:
Active Lifestyle Program
This program gets adults
active at least 30 minutes a day/5 days per week, for a total of
6 weeks - or at least 60 minutes per day for youth under 18.
Presidential Champions Program
If you’re already active (more than 30 minutes
a day/5 days per week for adults, or more than 60 minutes a day
for youth under 18) this program is for you. You may receive a certificate
of achievement signed by Governor Jim Doyle, and a prize award.
Signup can be accomplished at the website http://www.wisconsinchallenge.org
Reminder: Inspections on Tuesday
Power strips and extension cords, access to exits and electrical panels, and clutter including piles of paper will be focal points, as always, when the Green Bay Fire Department makes its semi-annual fire inspection. You are reminded that Tuesday (June 13) is the day for the spot-check visits.
Service-learning groups plan event for September
Our friends at Wisconsin Campus Compact share word of an upcoming one-day forum on Thursday, Sept. 21. The South East Wisconsin Service Learning Consortium (SEWSLC) is co-host for the event at Milwaukee Area Technical College in Oak Creek. Watch for details later.
Big loan deadline nears
Nationwide, financial aid types and people with loans know all about this big news — it’s the Brangelina Baby of the student-loan world — but for the rest of us: Students and graduates with outstanding Stafford and PLUS loans are being encouraged to consolidate their variable rate loans (and therefore lock in on a fixed rate) before June 30. On July 1, interest rates on variable-rate federal student loans will rise by nearly 2 percentage points, one of the largest single-year increases in the 40-year history of the federal student loan program. Many educational and lender sites carry extensive info; one example is Sallie Mae at http://www.salliemae.com/about/news_info/newsreleases/053006.htm
