Vol.
37, No. 123, June 22, 2006 / Log
Archive
Those clever Dallas sportswriters! Reporting on the crybaby allegations by team owner and dot-com billionaire Mark Cuban that game referees conspired to make bad calls against his Mavericks and deny them the NBA title, the writers dubbed it “The Cuban Whistle Crisis.” (When the league fined and warned him to keep quiet, it became, naturally, “The Cuban Muzzle Crisis.”) Also, we thank the loyal LOG reader who responded to our Monday lead-in about the epic U.S. Open meltdown with this: “I always wanted to say I play golf just like Phil Mickelson. And for a few minutes on Sunday, I could actually say that.” In non-sports-related news today:

Summer cleaning? Help Archives fill the gaps
The University Archives hold a wealth of information on campus history. Records reveal that at one time the campus was petitioned to have a curling rink! The photograph collection depicts the famous (or is it infamous?) Ugly Man Contest in the 1970s. The Archives staff is seeking your help to complete the holdings of publications and preserve campus history, Archives collects all campus publications and keeps them permanently. Gaps have been identified in some titles. Perhaps you have them hidden away in your files. If so, please consider sending them to the University Archives in the Library. You will free up your space and help future researchers! Specific needs are:
• Faculty/staff/student directories…1960s; 1980-1982; 1988-1989
• Sheepshead Revue… 1975-1981; 1983-1985; 1993; 1995; 2003-2004
• Student Resource Handbook… 2003-2005
• Bay Badger (forerunner to the 4E)… any issues would be welcome
• Course Listings… 1969-1973; spring 1996; fall 1999; spring 1999
Campus hosts Ho-chunk Nation’s youth leadership camp
About 60 delegates ranging in age from 12 to 18, as well as about two dozen staff members, are on the UW-Green Bay campus this week for the Ho-Chunk Leadership Camp. The students traveled earlier this week to the nearby Red Banks area, a spot considered important to the history and culture of the Wisconsin-based tribe. In addition to staying at Residence Life and using rooms of the University Union for their meetings, among other things the delegates also presented a flag to Chancellor Bruce Shepard and used one of MAC Hall’s computer labs for Internet-based work including college planning. The week’s activities conclude with a pow-wow from 1 to 4 p.m. this Saturday (June 24) in the Phoenix Room, followed by an evening dinner.

UW-Green Bay will be minus one of its longtime employees after tomorrow (Friday, June 23) when a veteran of 35+ years— the benefits specialist in the Human Resources Office — works her final day. At the request of the individual in question, however, friends and co-workers are keeping the retirement sendoff so low-key as to be almost non-existent. We won’t even mention her name here. At least in this paragraph.
Soukup to assume some of Pam Spangenberg’s duties
Human Resources has announced that Kris Soukup will be the contact for all benefits-related administration and questions (see previous item) in the future. Kris’s phone number will be 465-2839.
Interested in submitting to UW System’s new WiTAG program? Free help here!
The Institute for Research is always available to assist in any way with pre-proposals or proposals that are submitted to UW System for funding consideration. UW-Green Bay does not require a full internal review of proposal submitted to UW System though some limited approvals may be required per the guidelines. (Last week’s news release describing the new grants program is archived at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060619.htm) For assistance with this opportunity or others, please contact the Institute for Research at ext. 2565 or send an e-mail to Lidia Nonn, nonnl@uwgb.edu.
Blow-out sale! Sweatshirts as low as $9.99

• Hooded sweatshirts as low as $9.99
• T-shirts as low as $2.99

The store will be closed for inventory June 28-30.
Green t-shirts are state music’s best of the best
If you wondered about the portable risers and photo gear set up on the Circle Drive “circle” outside the library today, it was picture day for the talented young musicians attending the Wisconsin School Music Association’s all-star camp. The band, choir and orchestra students from across the state are ‘the cream of the crop’ musicians who auditioned in spring to land a spot in these groups. They are rehearsing for performances in October at the state teachers convention. Two groups of 200+ each are living and working on campus. Their closing concerts here are Saturday (June 24) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University Theatre and the Weidner Center’s Fort Howard Hall. UW-Green Bay music and camp officials say hosting the prestigious WSMA event is a plus for the campus and positive exposure with high-achieving, college-bound students.
Cartooning and comic books are hot with Middle School Art Studio
The 45th annual Summer Art Studio is in progress this week with nearly 80 middle-schoolers from around the state and the U.P. Students are getting creative under the guidance of co-directors Pete Angilello and Sandra Shackelford. We’re told the hottest classes are Cartooning: Anime and Manga Style and Cartooning and Comic Book Illustration. It’s the fourth year that middle-schoolers have had their own camp. If you want to catch the closing event — the public art show — it is scheduled for this Friday (June 23) at 5 p.m. in the 407 Gallery in the Studio Arts Building.
Interesting ‘Conserve’ fact: PSC pool
The energy-conservation webpage of Facilities Management has an interesting factoid this month concerning the pool temperature and heating source for the swimming pool (the Dorschel Natatorium) at the Phoenix Sports Center. For the sunny story, click http://www.uwgb.edu/facilities/conserve/updates.htm.
Chicken-wrapped fundraiser draws big crowd it’s fajitas next week
The Shorewood Golf Club is running lunch specials every Thursday this summer, with a portion of the proceeds going to Classified Staff Advisory Council’s development funds. Dan Murphy sends word that today’s fundraiser (chicken wrap) was SO successful that they apologize for any delays or problems because of the large crowd. Thanks to all who came, and they’ll gear up next week to handle the rush for two chicken fajitas for $3.50. For the summer schedule, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive37/2006june9.htm#shorewood.
Committee pledges to improve state purchasing
A recent AP story describes how a committee of state procurement representatives has been charged with studying ways to fine-tune how state agencies buy goods and services. (The group’s chair says, on a statewide level, the system is fundamentally sound.) See http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/news/local/14863307.htm.
Newspaper: UW admissions approach makes sense
An editorial in today’s Appleton Post-Crescent says the
UW System’s admissions practices, the subject of some intense criticism
a few weeks ago, actually make good sense. Click http://www.postcrescent.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060622/APC0602/606220621/1036
UW-Fox Valley administrator will go to ‘Boo U’
Thomas Pleger, associate dean at UW-Fox Valley the past five years, has been selected by UW System to serve a one-year appointment as interim dean for the two-year campus at Baraboo. See http://www.uwfoxvalley.uwc.edu/whatsnew/InterimCEO.html
Hacking episode rocks Ohio U
Representative of a growing trend and concern is the following story: Ohio University has suspended two IT supervisors as the institution investigates how faulty security played a role in a series of hacking incidents that may have compromised as many as 175,000 Social Security numbers. The school’s president is also expected to ask trustees for as much as $2 million to fund computer-security upgrades. Click

Respects
It should have been noted in last week’s LOG that flags flew at half staff on campus on Wednesday, June 14, for Hospitalman 2nd Class Jaime Jaenke, a member of the United States Navy Reserve, who was killed on duty in Iraq.
A star is born in the world of kidney-transplant recipients
We opened this LOG with a silly note about the just-concluded NBA
Finals, and we close it with an inspiring and educational note from
the same event. The Miami Heat won the championship with an assist
from veteran center (and former Tony Bennett teammate) Alonzo Mourning,
who is a high-visibility advocate for organ donation and the important
distinction that his own transplant (a kidney) was made possible
by a living donor. As a public service, we link to “Beyond a Title,
a Celebration of Life,” by Washington Post columnist Michael
Wilbon at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/21/AR2006062102224.html
