Archive
Greetings! With The Omen remake out today, a new Slayer CD, and the release of Ann Coulter's latest rant against her "godless" enemies, the 6-6-6 Day of the Beast angle is getting plenty of popular play. Loyal LOG readers will recall being warned of this as early as last May 5th (5-5-5, or the Day of Directory Assistance). As for us, we're waiting for next summer and planning a casino trip for 7-7-7 (the Day of Craps). Other than that, we have no big revelations to share, just campus news:
• Regents to vote on 6.8 percent tuition hike
• Discovery Channel spotlights Prof. Dutch, million-year 'forecast'
• Death of former Alumni Association president
• Columnist: Rosemann an inspiration
• June issue of 'Inside' magazine
• Report card: A's for Phoenix student-athletes
• Fan questions Badgers Football marketing
• Small businesses win kudos from Chamber
• Writer sees yet another image hit
• Reminder: Common Grounds is open
• Last call on hangers
Tuition hike of 6.8 percent is proposed for new academic year
Resident students in the University of Wisconsin System will see a 6.8 percent tuition increase (not including seg fees) under plans to be considered this week by the Board of Regents. Students at UW-Green Bay and all other four-year universities and two-year colleges would pay $291 more, or $4,568 for the tuition portion of their bills. The forecast? Prof. Dutch looks a million years out
UW-Green Bay Natural Sciences Prof. Steve Dutch has attracted the attention of the Discovery Channel news site with a recent article published in the journal Geosphere. Among his prognostications for a million years out: a new Hawaiian island, as many as 7,000 megaquakes for the San Francisco area, and a sinking New Orleans losing its spot along the meandering Mississippi. Dutch's article, using past geologic and climatic history to put geologic time in perspective, also makes forecasts for one thousand, ten thousand, and one hundred thousand years out. Former Alumni Association president is dead at 63
Funeral services are set for this Friday (June 9) for Wesley Rosemann, who died unexpectedly on May 29 while a patient at the Mayo Clinic. A 1979 graduate of UW-Green Bay, he ran his own tax service in De Pere for many years. He served as president of the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association in 1986 and '87. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Presbyterian Church, 605 N. Webster, De Pere, followed by a celebration of life at 11:30 a.m., and a luncheon afterward. Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Rosemann is survived by his wife, Jean M. Jacky.
Wesley Rosemann an inspiration, columnist notes
Wes Rosemann, a past president of the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association, was born with the birth defect spina bifida, which limits mobility and health but not the capacity to make a difference. A moving tribute from Press-Gazette editor/columnist Tony Walter, a high school classmate, is at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060606/GPG07/606060451/1207/GPGnews.
June issue of 'Inside' magazine is now online
The latest issue of the "Inside UW-Green Bay" magazine has been hitting mailboxes off-campus (alumni) and on (current employees) for about a week now. We know because of e-mail feedback — mostly very complimentary — from readers. Stories they have mentioned specifically include:
• "Mystery, murder, obsession, faith" — the Adam Bruckner '98 story, at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/INSIDE4.htm#ministry
• The "Pay it Forward" cover story on rising college costs, and the importance of student scholarships at UW-Green Bay, at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/inside.htm#forward
• "Animated April finds Dream Work," on the Hollywood career of a talented theatre graduate, at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/INSIDE4.htm#dream
Report card: Phoenix student-athletes have big spring semester
UW-Green Bay student-athletes posted 19 perfect 4.0 grade point average this spring. Ten of the 15 sport programs recorded a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The women's tennis team recorded the highest spring team grade point average of 3.63, followed closely by women's cross country (3.56) and women's basketball (3.48). Softball's Kate Sullivan and Nordic ski's Johanna Winters were each named to ˆ Academic All-District V teams during the spring. For more, click http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/offthefield/060506.asp.
Fan blasts marketing of Badgers Football
Sour grapes? A market-driven fact of life in big-time college sports? Or legitimate beef? You be the judge. The UW Athletics Department funded an ad campaign to encourage potential ticket buyers to donate $500 in order to become eligible to purchase 2006 football tickets... when there was no guarantee enough tickets would be available. At least one fan, who found out too late that $550 still wasn't enough to make the cut, is raising a fuss. Interesting story at http://www.madison.com/tct/mad/topstories/index.php?ntid=86413&ntpid=0.
Small businesses win kudos from Chamber
An alert LOG reader who skims The Business News calls our attention to the fact that local firms with significant UW-Green Bay ties are among the nominees and honorees at the Chamber of Commerce annual small-business recognition luncheon tomorrow (June 7) at the KI Center. Imaginasium and Skyline Displays both have the UW-Green Bay alumni pipeline working for them, and Unique Business Solutions is owned by an adjunct faculty member in Business Administration, David Yeghiaian, who employs student interns.
Columnist says UW takes another image hit, this time on admissions
Longtime political observer and columnist Stan Milan discusses the ongoing differences between the UW System and the Wisconsin Legislature, exemplified most recently by the opposition of some members of the Legislature to a "holistic" admissions approach. Reminder: Common Grounds is open
Your voices were heard, loud and clear, and the Common Grounds Coffeehouse is serving full coffee menu and limited bakery and sandwich options. Hours of operation through Thursday, June 15:
Monday-Thursday — 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Friday-Sunday — Closed
Last call for hangers
The Phoenix Bookstore is offering further incentives on its unique plastic coat-hanger sale (you remember, that's the sale with 1 bundle, 50 cents; 2 bundles, FREE!) They're offering an additional 100 percent off on "purchases" of two bundles or more. Do the math; it's an unbeatable bargain.
