Regents OK promotions for full Prof. Hu and 8 ‘associates’
The Board of Regents approved promotions for nine UW-Green Bay faculty members at its meeting today (Friday, June 9) at UW-Milwaukee. Promoted to full professor from the rank of associate was Prof. Tian-You Hu, a mathematician who teaches in the Natural and Applied Sciences and Mathematics academic units. Eight faculty members were promoted from the probationary status of assistant professor to the rank of associate professor with tenure. They are: Rosemary Christensen, Humanistic Studies and First Nations Studies; Kaoime Malloy, Communication and the Arts and Theatre; Uwe Pott, Human Biology and Biology; Laurel Phoenix, Public and Environmental Affairs and Geography; Ellen Rosewall, Communication and the Arts; Michael Zorn, Natural and Applied Sciences and Chemistry; Meir Russ, Business Administration; and Bryan Vescio, Humanistic Studies and English.

University Union expansion gets go-ahead
The Board of Regents voted earlier today to authorize construction of a new and improved University Union at UW-Green Bay. The Regents also approved a design report for the $6.2 million project, which will be supported by student fees and other program revenue. Remodeling of about 18,700 square feet and the addition of 17,500 square feet of space will allow relocation of the Phoenix Bookstore and UW Credit Union and include a student activity core, which will be home to the American Intercultural Center, the Office of Student Life, and student organizations. Regents set 2006-07 tuition rates
Regents have approved the UW System’s 2006-07 operating budget, which includes a 6.8 percent tuition increase for resident undergraduates. A departure from the double-digit gains of recent years, that equates to $145 per semester at the comprehensives including UW-Green Bay. Nearly half the increase relates to a biennial budget provision stipulating the UW System must use tuition instead of state support to pay for rising utility costs. A summary is at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060608.htm#heading2

For full-time undergrads at UW-Green Bay: $5,716
The amount $5,716 represents total annual tuition and fees for 2006-07 at UW-Green Bay for a full-time undergraduate with Wisconsin residency. Because the SUFAC (student fees) portion of the bill will hold steady without an increase, the total percentage increase on this campus will be 5.4% over last year. A thoughtful editorial on UW System tuition conundrum
A 5 or 6 percent tuition increase doesn’t sound too bad… and the UW System really is being squeezed by competing demands and dwindling resources… but as an editorial in the Wausau Daily Herald argues, “the system cannot ride on the backs of students forever.” The paper advocates for legislative support, concluding “Some state institutions are worth every dime we spend on them, and then some.” Click http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060607/WDH06/606070322/1636

Spoons earn David Damkoehler an award in national exhibit
Two spoons by Prof. David Damkoehler have been selected for an Award of Merit in the juried exhibit, Crafts National 40, opening June 16 in State College, Pa. The pieces, Rectilinear Spoon and Undulating Spoon, are made of austenitic stainless steel, a material widely used in kitchen appliances, scientific instruments and Rolex watches. Damkoehler describes his “interest in giving sculptural presence to the terrain of the table.” For more, and a look at the pieces, go to http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/

UW-Green Bay spring commencement on cable TV this month
UW-Green Bay’s 2006 spring commencement (both ceremonies, actually) will be televised this month on local cable television. Taped telecasts of the May 13 commencement ceremonies will be carried Saturday, June 17 and Saturday, June 24 by Time Warner Cable. The telecasts will begin at 12:30 p.m. For specific channels click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006june.htm#cable

Video podcasts: Greenberg, Mlaker remarks to grads
Video of commencement speeches by Prof. Emeritus Martin Greenberg and student Kathy Ann Mlaker is now available on the Commencement web site. Among other things, Greenberg, a nationally recognized science fiction editor and futurist, shared his pick for the 2066 Super Bowl: Green Bay over the Shanghai Panthers. Mlaker talked about learning inside and outside the classroom. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/commencement/podcasts/.

UW-Milwaukee impresses Regents with research push
Remember how UW-Green Bay won accolades for its community “growth agenda” in April? It was Milwaukee’s turn on Thursday, and a parade of Southeast Wisconsin business executives pledged their support for UWM’s $100 million campaign for more private and state support. (One particularly impactful “factoid”: Chancellor Carlos Santiago noted UWM enrolls more Wisconsin residents than any school in the state.) Waukesha talk
A proposal to make the two-year UW-Waukesha college a “university center” aligned closely with neighboring UW-Milwaukee is moving forward. The plan was discussed at length during Thursday’s Regent meetings. Newspaper coverage is at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=433599
