UW-Green Bay athletic teams show strong academic progress
Phoenix teams again ranked well above national averages in a report that measures eligibility and retention of Division I student-athletes. The 2004-05 report, which the NCAA released today, shows 12 of UW-Green Bay's 15 sports had Academic Performance Rates above national averages. UW-Green Bay's rates ranged from 937 for men's basketball, which was 10 points above the national average for Division I men's basketball programs, to perfect scores of 1,000 for four sports: men's golf, men's tennis, women's swimming and women's tennis. Chancellor Bruce Shepard says the rating system is a useful tool that shows the value the NCAA places on academic performance, and Athletics Director Ken Bothof says faculty and staff share the credit for UW-Green Bay's solid showing. Tickets available for Thursday's quarterfinal
Despite rumors to the contrary, there ARE tickets available for Thursday evening's (March 2) Horizon League women's basketball championship quarterfinal game. The Phoenix women host Youngstown State at 7 p.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center. It may be your final time to see the Phoenix women play at home this season. If both UW-Green Bay and top-seeded UW-Milwaukee win their quarterfinal games, the tournament will move to Milwaukee. Tickets in advance are $9 for adults, $7 for senior citizens. Call the athletics tickets office (now in Rose Hall) to order, 465-2625.

UW System reveals proposal for RA rights, responsibilities
Remember the firestorm over the UW-Eau Claire resident assistant and Bible study in the dorm room? Today, the UW System reveals that RAs "would have the same rights as other students to lead and participate in activities anywhere on campus" under a policy recommendation to be considered by the full Board of Regents next week. "The policy I'm recommending balances the rights and responsibilities of RAs as students and employees," says President Kevin Reilly. For details, see http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060301.htm

Sensational headlines (some) about UW System felons (40 of them)
"Felons employed by UW!" screamed some newspaper headlines and broadcast teasers (implying, seemingly, a very large number). One legislator issued a news release, saying, "Shockingly, our UW System has 40 convicted felons on its (statewide) payroll, including 2 murderers, 5 child sex offenders, 6 druggies and a host of other employees convicted of serious crimes." Just when you think public relations issues for the UW System couldn't possibly move any further... out there... they do! At UW-Green Bay, a single example
Today's Green Bay Press-Gazette localizes the statewide "felons" story with a straight-forward account of the single individual listed for UW-Green Bay. University spokesman Scott Hildebrand said the former grounds worker was on the University payroll last year from June until October as part of a long-standing partnership with Sanger B. Powers Correctional Center in Oneida. Officials knew the employee had a criminal record. "We've had a very good relationship with Sanger Powers," Hildebrand said. "There's never been an incident in the decade we've been involved with it." He told the newspaper the transitional program has been "a positive on both ends." More on 'felons' audit
The vast majority of you - the UW faculty, staff, student and LTE employees who don't carry felony records (999 out of every thousand, on average) - and even those who do, might be interested to know how the UW System is responding to safety and security issues raised by the Legislative Audit Bureau. The UW was already working on all three LAB recommendations, and several campuses had been examining employment policies and background-check procedures. A news release is at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060228.htm

A cautionary tale: Milwaukee martini mess is a reminder
Finally... hats off to those wise and responsible people who over the years have crafted the UW-Green Bay Alcohol and Other Drug Policy. Right there in the preamble, basically the first line, it says: "Alcoholic beverages should never be the focus of any program or activity." If a renowned Milwaukee museum had adhered to such a policy, it might have avoided the national attention that followed a recent rental to Clear Channel Radio for a $30-per-head-all-you-can-drink "Martinifest." A wild scene ensued.
