UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 37, No. 86, March 27, 2006     /     Log Archive

Today the LOG salutes Alvis Edgar Owens Jr., who died Saturday at his home in California at age 76. Forget "Hee Haw." In his 1960s heyday Buck Owens was a serious innovator with the "Bakersfield Sound" and hits like "Together Again," moving country-western music back west and away from over-produced Nashville mush. Buckaroos wasn't bad, neither. In other news today:

A nutrition survey, and possible workshops, for you...
Greetings UW-Green Bay Faculty, Students and Staff! Prof. Debra Pearson sends word that the Nutritional Science program is planning to begin offering ongoing nutrition demonstrations and workshops. "The demonstrations would be centered on a given topic. Those who choose to participate would gain cooking techniques and strategies, nutrition information, and a delicious meal. To better cater to the wants and needs of this campus we are asking you to take a few minutes (5 minutes max. — we promise!!!) to fill out a survey before March 31. Thank you in advance for your time and cooperation! Please click on this link to take the survey: http://www.uwgb.edu/surveys/TakeSurvey.asp?SurveyID=31H873KJ4l2KG.

YWCA honors Denise Sweet family
Prof. Denise Sweet and sons Damon Sweet Panek and Vaughn Panek Sweet are among five families selected as 2006 Green Bay-De Pere YWCA Families of Distinction. They were honored at an event March 21 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center. The family was cited for keeping their Native American heritage alive through their work as teachers, writers and artists. Damon is a park ranger at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore where he is a cultural education specialist and holds Ojibwe language camps. Vaughn, a UW-Green Bay student, is a photographer who has traveled in Central and South American to document indigenous cultures.

'Connecting' snapshots
Tidying up our photo files recently, we were struck by how many were dated Wednesday, March 15. That was a model day for "Connecting learning to life." From high school kids here for the watershed symposium, from the visiting Peruvian scholar, to the women's recognition luncheon and the "Empty Bowls" fundraiser... it was a busy day. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

Institute for Research hosts BIE web conference this Thursday
Thursday, March 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. in MAC-137, the Institute for Research hosts a GRC Web Conference in which Program Officer Tanyelle Richardson will conduct a two-hour presentation on the U.S. Department of Education's (ED's) Business and International Education Program (BIE). Faculty will have an opportunity to ask questions and receive answers. The receipt deadline for BIE applications is expected to be November 15, 2006, so Web Conference participants will have ample time to develop competitive proposals. Seating is limited — RSVP to Lidia Nonn at nonnl@uwgb.edu

UW System hosts colloquium on teaching and learning
Scholars from across the UW System will join fellow teachers from throughout the country as part of a national effort to improve how university faculty can help college students reach academic success. "Evidence, Impact and Momentum," the 2006 Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Colloquium, will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, at the Madison Concourse Hotel. See http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060327.htm.

Spring Break trips include competition for Phoenix
Wins over Ohio U., Hartford and Dartmouth were bright spots on a 3-7 week for the Phoenix women's softball team at the Rebel Spring Games tournament in Orlando, Fla. Also on the road last week were the men's and women's tennis teams, who played in Hawaii. They won a few, lost a few and... presumably... had a fantastic trip regardless. If you care about the scores, see http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/index.asp.

Reminder on 'Crash,' dialogue luncheon
Wednesday noon (March 29) is the time for the annual Campus Dialogue Luncheon. The Oscar-winning movie "Crash" shows tonight and Tuesday, and provides the discussion topic. For details, check a recent LOG at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive37/2006march9.htm#dialogue.

Reminder: Art shopping
Monday and Tuesday (March 27 and 28) mark the annual spring art sale sponsored by the Art Agency organization. Sale hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days in Phoenix Room C of the University Union.

Students to present Danceworks
Yesterday's Green Bay Press-Gazette included an item describing how the UW-Green Bay student dance organization Danceworks will feature original works in a concert at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday (April 1) in the University Theater. Admission is free. And program info is at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060326/GPG0506/603260639/1268/GPGent.

Profile of UW-Green Bay alum, UW Regent
"Regent calls on non-profit experience" is the headline in the UW-Madison student newspaper The Badger Herald, over a story on UW-Green Bay graduate and current Regent Eileen Connolly-Keesler. See http://badgerherald.com/news/2006/03/27/regent_calls_on_non.php.
