Manager for Thilmany Papers to succeed Raduenz in Facilities Management
Christopher Hatfield, who has been with Thilmany Papers in various positions since 1993, has been named director of facilities management and planning at UW-Green Bay. Jeffreys wins UW System Women of Color Award
Green Bay community activist Celestine Jeffreys will be honored tomorrow (Saturday, March 4) with a University of Wisconsin System Women of Color Award at ceremonies on the UW-Eau Claire campus. She'll be among 16 women across the state to receive one of the awards. Jeffreys was the UW-Green Bay nominee for the award open to faculty, staff and community members who exemplify the values of the UW System's plan for educational quality through racial and ethnic diversity. Jeffreys has a long list of community involvements since moving to Green Bay in 2000. In the Feb. 21 primary elections, she was the top vote getter in a six-way race for an open seat in Green Bay City Council district 7 and advances to the April 4 general election.
'Curriculum' for Grandparents' University is announced
Grandparents and their grandchildren between the ages of seven and 14 can enroll in a new two-day Grandparents' University at UW-Green Bay that will allow grandparents and children together to explore a topic of interest in depth and enjoy summer activities. Registration is open now for the July 13 and 14 event. Participants may commute or stay on campus. The instructors and five possible "majors" are:
• Prof. Emeritus Michael Murphy, "An Introduction to Irish History and Culture"
• Prof. Alison Gates, Fiber Arts
• Prof. Jennifer Mokren, Enamel Arts
• Prof. Donna Ritch, Forensic Science
• Curator Thomas Erdman, Biodiversity

Silk Road review
All but a few seats in the high balcony were filled for last night's Weidner Center concert featuring the Silk Road Ensemble and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The remarkable display of world-music virtuosity was the topic of a Green Bay Press-Gazette review this morning at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060303/GPG0505/603030588/1267.
Phoenix women advance to Sunday action
Speaking of virtuosity, last night's Phoenix women's basketball game probably doesn't fit that description. More of a grind-it-out affair, it was a tourney victory nonetheless over a determined Youngstown State team. UW-Green Bay improved to a fantastic 23-5 record with the 63-53 win. Third-seeded Illinois-Chicago will be the opposition in a semifinal round contest at 2:30 p.m. Sunday (March 5) at UW-Milwaukee's Klotsche Center. The game is expected to be televised locally on TV-32. For more on last night's game, click http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/wbb/030206.asp.
Preview of men's tourney opener
Remember to click on your videostream at 4:30 p.m. today for the Horizon League quarterfinal men's game between Tod Kowalczyk's Phoenix and UIC. The Green Bay Press-Gazette previewed the contest this morning at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060303/GPG020101/603030489/1229/GPGsports.
Sorry, but one last story about felonies issue
While most newspaper stories and editorials this week dealt with the macro — 40 employees statewide with felony records, and the political back-and-forth — a story in today's Wisconsin State Journal looks closely at perhaps the most serious and immediate case, on the UW-Madison campus. It is headlined "Staff, students objected to convicted professor on campus" at http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=74836&ntpid=4.
Correct title
An editing error in yesterday's LOG resulted in the truncation of former UW-Green Bay official Mari Barr's lengthy new federal title. She is Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Human Resources and Administration and Chief Human Capital Officer at the U.S. Department of Justice.
