After what seemed like several consecutive decades of fine graduation-day weather, has anyone else noticed it's now two straight years that spring Commencement has been chased inside the Weidner Center by bad weather? (Really bad: last year, drizzle and near-record cold, and this year, a monsoon.) A conservative friend has taken to calling it "The Curse of Michael Moore." Silly. But better warm up the Rush Limbaugh incantations, just in case. In real news today:

Paper Technology Transfer Center earns grant
UW-Green Bay's Paper Technology Transfer Center has been awarded a grant to study the impact of single-stream recycling on the quality of fiber materials going to paper mills. The UW System Solid Waste Research Council awarded the center a grant of $29,188 to support the research project — one of four projects statewide approved for funding by the council. UW-Green Bay gets State Department grant for 'Journey to Jordan'
UW-Green Bay has received a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State to fund an Arabic Language Institute this summer. The "Journey to Jordan" Institute will send 14 high school students from across the United States to the University of Jordan in Amman for intensive Arabic language study and cultural activities. Jay Harris, international projects coordinator, says Prof. Ibtesam al-Atiyat will be a presenter, UW-Green Bay alumnus Daoud Abboud (now a corporate executive in Amman) helped arrange home stays, and Prof. Anne Kok, Social Work chairperson, will spend nearly three weeks with the students providing guidance for the program's service-learning components. Plotner joins us from PDQ
The Human Resources office announced that UW-Green Bay alumna Amy Plotner will join the HR staff on Monday, May 15, as a human resources manager. She was previously employed at PDQ Manufacturing, Inc. as a human resources coordinator. She will be working on classified recruitments, contract administration, administering Family Medical Leave Act and other general HR duties.

More Heirloom details on tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, May 20
Heirloom tomato, pepper and tomatillo plants go on sale at the annual Heirloom Vegetable Sale beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 20 in the Laboratory Sciences greenhouse on campus. Sale coordinator Vicki Medland says 4,500 tomato plants representing 46 different varieties are ready for sale and but fewer than 1,500 pepper plants will be put up for sale. Area students take history projects to Washington, D.C.
Six projects by Northeastern Wisconsin middle and high school students have been named national finalists in the 2006 National History Day contest. They are now eligible to advance to competition June 11 through 15 in Washington, D.C. The national finalists and honorable mention recipients were chosen at a statewide competition April 29 in Madison, following a regional competition on our campus. ESL Institute begins this summer
UW-Green Bay is offering its first English as a Second Language Summer Institute July 17 through Aug. 18 for students age 18 and older wanting to improve their English skills. It's an intensive program for those preparing for academic study or other endeavors conducted in English. Bilingual students who recently have emigrated to the U.S. and bilingual international students will be equally served by the institute experience. Provider Summit planned by Alumni Board member
Sara Inman, a member of the Alumni Association board, invites the campus to a Brown County Provider Summit from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 1, in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. Topics include the Community Partnership for Children and the Connect E-Mail Group for providers, a bilingual quick-reference guide for parents. New campus road closed
For benefit of LOG's off-campus subscribers, a reminder that the new road to the west (back) of the Events Center will be closed May 15-19 for storm water drain system installation. Use the East Walter Way route through housing to get to MAC Hall or the PSC. The new road should re-open May 22.

Mokren, Kramp get awards, too
Also being honored at Friday night's student awards night are two UW-Green Bay employees recognized for their contributions to student life and organizational achievements. The 2006 Outstanding Adviser Award goes to Associate Prof. Jennifer Mokren, COA and art. The 2006 Outstanding Support Staff Award goes to Kelly Kramp of the University Union.
