Poet Laureate, UW-Green Bay students visit Phuture Phoenix club
UW-Green Bay Prof. Denise Sweet, Wisconsin's Poet Laureate, talked about poetry and creativity in a visit last week with students in a Phuture Phoenix club at Washington Middle School. Sweet, who teaches in the English and First Nations Studies programs, told the students that part of her job as Poet Laureate is to help young people find creativity in their lives. UW-Green Bay theater and art students also shared their interests with the middle school students. Phuture Phoenix clubs at area middle schools are the latest addition to the award-winning program aimed at encouraging youngsters to pursue a college education. Photos of Sweet and the UW-Green Bay students meeting with the club at Washington Middle School are online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/06phoenixvisit.htm.
Theater looks ahead to 2006-07
Chairperson Laura Riddle announces that three of four scheduled plays on the UW-Green Bay Theater calendar for next academic year have been selected. She'll direct the musical, "Chicago," by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Also in first semester, John Mariano will direct the play, "Voices of the Prairie," by John Olive. Second semester productions will include Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and one other play to be selected.
Flags at half-staff
Gov. Doyle has directed that flags be flown at half-staff today (Monday, May 15) and any day during Police Week (through Saturday, May 20), as a mark of respect for Wisconsin peace officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
Common Grounds Coffeehouse . . . Do you miss it?
Apparently, some are rumbling and grumbling now that the Coffeehouse is closed for the summer months and that faculty, staff, and students will miss their morning cup of coffee, cappucino, or latte. How much do you or will you miss it? The Union wants to know. Please feel free to contact Rick Warpinski, Union Director at #2090 or via email — warpinsr@uwgb.edu . . . . Or, for anonymous comments, go to the Union Web site — http://www.uwgb.edu/union/comments/ — and fill out an on-line comment card regarding your interests in the Coffeehouse.
Summer dining options . . .
The University Union, Sodexho Campus Dining Services, and Shorewood Golf Course want you to know your options for dining on campus this summer. For now, the Garden Café is open Monday-Friday 7:30am-1:15pm (close at 1:00pm on Friday) and Shorewood Golf Course Clubhouse Restaurant is open 7am-Dark every day. The Garden offers grab n go salads, sandwiches, fruit and vegetable trays, hot dogs, a daily entrée, and variety of snacks and beverages. Shorewood's menu is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/restaurantInfo/menu.asp offering fresh, made-to-order sandwiches, chili, pizza, hamburgers, chicken, a weekly entrée (this week - Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, Chips/Pickle for $4.00), soup, and more.
. . . New for Summer 2006 — Meals Plans for Everyone!
Faculty and Staff can now buy into a 15 Meal Block Plan for only $75.00 ($5/meal) which offers you a full lunch at either the Garden Café, Nicolet Dining Room (starting June 12), and Shorewood Golf Course. The plan can only be purchased at the University Information Center and you must bring your campus ID (the plan is loaded onto your ID card). You can pay with cash, check, or credit card (MC or Visa). Go to the following Web site for the complete details — http://www.uwgb.edu/union/diningServices/summerSpecials.asp.
New BOR site on the Web
UW System Administration has rolled out an updated Board of Regents Web site. New and improved features include enhanced archives and access to official Board documents, direct links to daily news summaries, and access to audio and video of the full Board
sessions. See http://www.uwsa.edu/bor/index.htm.
Editorial disputes claim that 'bloat' is factor in tax load
Sunday's edition of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel quotes studies showing Wisconsin ranks 35th nationally in the percentage of residents who work for state and local governments. Interesting. See: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=423420.
Awards, tourney loss end softball season
The Phoenix women's softball team dropped a second-day game to Cleveland State in the Horizon League tournament, ending the season with a 14-21 record. On the plus side, UW-Green Bay had three players — Lisa Meissner, Kate Sullivan and Jenna Woepse — earn first-team all-Horizon recognition. Sullivan received regional academic honors, as well. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/softball.
Kulenkamp stays
They've been talking so much about a positive job market for new graduates, perhaps it's no surprise that May 2006 graduate Mary Kulenkamp has landed a job already. The former Phoenix standout and student assistant has been added to the coaching staff of women's basketball head coach Kevin Borseth. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/wbb.
Reimer returns
Butch Reimer, after several years away from Phoenix athletics, is returning to coach the UW-Green Bay Nordic ski program. Read more at http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/ski.
