Even the mice wouldn't eat 'em but, just the same, we're planning on scooping up a few of those super-spicey pepper plants on Friday (see first item). It's a safe bet the bugs and chipmunks will leave 'em alone, too, so even if you're cool to "hot," they'll look great in the garden... and benefit a good cause.

Campus employees can shop heirloom vegetables tomorrow, noon to 4:30
Noon to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, May 19) are the hours that persons employed on campus can shop for heirloom tomato and pepper plants — along with tomatillos and two varieties of hybrid tomatoes — at the annual Heirloom Vegetable Plant "pre-sale" in the Laboratory Sciences greenhouse. The regular sale begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with tickets for greenhouse entrance being given out beginning at 8 a.m. Coordinator Vicki Medland says 46 varieties of tomatoes are available. Peppers are in limited supply due to poor germination and a mouse with an appetite for pepper seedlings, but there's a range of varieties, including a fair supply of bell peppers. Also, notes Medland, there's a good supply of habanero peppers, which the mouse left untouched. Heirlooms and tomatillos are $1.25 per plant, and the two hybrid tomatoes are $1.50 each.

Heirloom sale retains its original purpose
Founded in 1996, the annual Heirloom Vegetable Plant sale still serves its original purpose. Proceeds go toward bringing visiting scientists and researchers to campus to speak and interact with students and helps to support student attendance at scientific meetings and conferences.

Bill would let veterans attend UWs for free
All agree it is a terrific gesture and a great benefit, but will it also be an unfunded mandate? UW System schools are watching closely as Governor Jim Doyle says he plans to sign a bill that would provide a full waiver of tuition costs for qualified military veterans, with a funding source as of yet unspecified. Valpo is back
Interesting news for UW-Green Bay sports fans: The Horizon League announced it would add a 10th member institution when Valparaiso University begins play in 2007. The Crusaders are bolting the Mid-Continent Conference. The move reunites Valpo, a private school located about 75 miles from Chicago in northwest Indiana, with many of its historic rivals (including UWGB) from the old AMCU-8 days. See http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/offthefield/051706.asp. Press-Gazette coverage is at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060518/GPG020101/605180520/1229/GPGsports.

Alumna's good work yields scholarship award for current student
A current UW-Green Bay student will benefit dramatically next year because of the work of Candace (Neville) Walton a 1972 graduate of UW-Green Bay with a bachelor's degree in communication and the arts. Walton, the director of planned giving and major gifts for the American Red Cross, Milwaukee, was recognized for her mentoring efforts with a Distinguished Service Award presented by the Milwaukee chapter of TEMPO International. With the award, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation presented a scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to the Wisconsin college or university of Walton's choice, UW-Green Bay. The recipient will be a female communication major, preferably from southern Wisconsin, who has demonstrated financial need, good academic standing and completed her sophomore year requirements.

Eric Knapowski has assumed the duties of mail room operation. Eric is a UW-Green Bay graduate with degrees in biology, psychology and human development. During his studies here he has worked in the mailroom every year and has handled every aspect of mail operation. Mike Barry notes that "Eric will be charged with cost-saving methodology, please work with Eric if he suggests less expensive but effective methods of handling major mail pieces."

'Hot' energy fact No. 2: a whopping big bill
A 1,600-square-foot residential home uses approximately 600 kilowatts (kw) per month. At $.05 per kw., UW-Green Bay's electricity usage for November 2005 was 1,341,600 or 44,720 kw per day! What's that add up to? Here's where you gulp — an electric (only) bill of more than $68,000! See the Dec./Jan. bill and helpful links to energy-saving ideas at http://www.uwgb.edu/facilities/conserve/.

Just missing out on a $2,000 scholarship was Honorable Mention essayist Jennifer Ernie of UW-Green Bay. Click http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r060515.htm.

The 'dismal science'? Try the new hot major
A newsworthy note: According to the Career Journal, the new hot major is economics. Colleges and universities in the United States awarded 40 percent more degrees in economics in 2004 than just five years earlier. That's according to Prof. John J. Siegfried of Vanderbilt University, who tracks 272 colleges and universities around the country for the Journal of Economic Education. Economics also is the most popular major at Harvard, where 964 students majored in the subject in 2005.
