Vol.
37, No. 107, May 8, 2006 / Log
Archive
This is the Log newsletter for faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for the evening of Monday,
May 8, which happens to be the 80th birthday of Archibald Donald Rickles. In the days before remote control, those
who grew up or grew old with Johnny Carson had to work to avoid Don Rickles from his, oh, approximately 3,000
“Tonight Show” appearances. Dummy up, hockey pucks… read on… and try not to move your lips:

Doyle raves about Phuture Phoenix, calls Green Bay a model
Big kudos for Green Bay, its University and Phuture Phoenix from Gov. Jim Doyle. Speaking to the Board of Regents
last Friday in Madison, the governor said in unveiling his Wisconsin Covenant proposal, “Much of what we’re doing
here is modeled after what has been done in Green Bay.” He credited Chancellor Bruce Shepard and his wife, Cyndie,
director of Phuture Phoenix, for being leaders in efforts to promote diversity and raise the educational aspirations of
young people. For more, click

TPA goes down to defeat
Wisconsin’s state Senators ended the legislative session by killing the so-called Taxpayer Protection Amendment proposal.
UW System officials say the bill would have damaged the university’s ability to provide students with a quality
education. UW-Green Bay officials credit friends of the University for stepping up and being heard. Despite a decisive
“no” vote, look for discussion to continue. Read both the news coverage and, as revealing, an editorial on tax reform
(stating flatly, “Taxes are too high in Wisconsin”) from the state’s largest newspaper. Full story at http://www.jsonline.

Snapshots: Alumni Awards program
Missed the Alumni Association’s annual awards event? Check out the snapshots of the happy award recipients last
weekend, along with their family and friends.

Remember: Heirloom plant sale is the weekend after commencement
The big event on campus this coming weekend is commencement; the weekend after that it’s the annual heirloom plant
sale in the Laboratory Sciences greenhouse. The doors open for the sale of tomatoes and peppers at 9 a.m. on Saturday,
May 20. As in past years, those who work on campus can quietly shop the afternoon before the public sale (Friday, May
19) between noon and 4:30 p.m. Heirloom tomato and pepper plants will be $1.25 each. Prices for two hybridsFourth
of July and Sugary Cherrywill be $1.50 each.
Meredith, Resch are ‘exporting’ American musical theatre
Prof. Sarah Meredith will get an assist from Sharon Resch of Green
Bay and Carolyn Freeman of Las Vegas, Nev. in teaching American
musical theatre in Slovakia this month. Meredith will be at the
Academy of Music in Banska Bystrica from May 10 though May 20 to
teach musical theatre, opera and singing. Resch and Freeman — both
former professional Broadway dancers — will join her May 11 and
12 to teach American character and tap dance, focusing on the “golden
years” of American musical theatre. Freeman attended UW-Green Bay’s
Jazz Fest last January when compositions by her late husband, jazz
pianist Russell Freeman, were featured. The Green Bay Press-Gazette
features the trio in detail: http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060507/GPG05/605070634/1907
Four students win NEW Arts Council awards
Three art students and a music student were winners recently when the NEW Arts Council announced its scholarship
awards. The first place award in visual arts went to Johanna Winters. Also, Dan Klewer and Andrew Linskens won honorable
mentions in that category. All three are seniors. Freshman music major Ian Toohill won an honorable mention in
the performing arts category.
Celebration for Assistant Curator Tina Bechtel
Assistant Curator Tina Bechtel announced that she will be leaving at the end of this semester. Join a gathering in her
honor from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in Theatre Hall 331C. Contact Denise Olson to sign a card for Bechtel.
Three named ‘outstanding’ by art faculty
UW-Green Bay art faculty recently commended three students — Dan Klewer, Cory Linsmeyer and Donna Mleziva
— with “Outstanding Senior Exhibit” recognition. Their impressive exhibits were a capstone to their time and effort at
UW-Green Bay.
‘Latino Link’ recognizes UW-Green Bay student
Oristela Vannieuwenhoven received a $600 scholarship from Latino Link — an organization promoting the pursuit of
education and advance of Latino youth — for the 2006-07 school year. She was presented the scholarship at the Grand
Meridian in Appleton in April. The active community volunteer is majoring in Social Change and Development with a
business minor.
Reminder: General Assembly, Anniversary Celebration for Academic Staff
An Academic Staff General Assembly and anniversary celebration will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, May 12 in
the 1965 Room.
Any more, and they’ll declare a hunting season
For many years, UW-Green Bay was the only NCAA Division I sports program with the mascot “Phoenix.” Then,
a few years ago, D-1 newcomer Elon College in North Carolina decided there should be two Phoenix. (Phoenixes?
Phoeni? It’s a singular noun.) Now, a friend tells us, the rush is on, at least on the small-college level. Swarthmore College
is preparing to jump into the fire with a campus vote, and Wilson College has already been flying with “phoenix”
for some time. See Elon’s version, again, at
