UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 38, No. 30, November 9, 2006     /     Log Archive

Odds 'n' ends from Election Day: The 800 student voters at Residence Life favored Gov. Doyle by a 53-45 percentage, mirroring the statewide results and echoing the political scientist we know who downplays the liberal/activist stereotype, saying, "Most students tend to vote like their parents do"... The gay-marriage ban was one notable exception, however, opposed by 67 percent of the resident students who voted... In races in which UW-Green Bay hosted debates, results were: 8th Congressional, Steve Kagen 141,598, John Gard 134,990; 1st Senate, Alan Lasee 40,338, Charlie Most 28,764, Jill Bussiere 3,709; 1st Assembly, Gary Bies 13,736, Ame Grail 11,887; 3rd Assembly, Al Ott 14,655, Ronald Gruett 10,049... Rep. Frank Lasee '86, who drew national attention for his somewhat controversial ideas to make schools safer, still edged his closest write-in challenger by a 15-1 ratio... It's unfair to second-guess only one political ad — among so many — but we can't resist: If the outside attack-ad people thought "Millionaire" was an effective epithet in Wisconsin, what about Herb Kohl?... What does the legislative shakeup mean for Wisconsin's 2007-09 budget? Stay tuned. But enough blogging, let's get Logging:

'Coffee addict' Chancellor moves office hours to Common Grounds
Chancellor Shepard, coffee addict that he is and noting that a bunch of upcoming office hours could only be fit in at early morning times, is going to experiment with a different approach. Instead of at his office, the open office hours for faculty and staff will occur in the comfort of the Common Grounds coffee house. Hours for upcoming weeks are:

      Monday, November 13th, 7:30-8:30 a.m.
      Wednesday, November 22nd, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
      Monday, November 27th, 7:30-8:30 a.m.
      Monday, December 4th, 9:00-10:00 a.m.
      Monday, December 11th, 7:30-8:30 a.m.
      Monday, December 18th, 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Come on by and just pull up a chair. Coffee is on the Chancellor — just let the barista know as you order. And, since technically they are no longer office hours, what should they be called? Naming rights available.

More on... Coffee Talk, Java Jive, Buzzin' with Bruce, Name TBD
Faculty and staff are reminded that, with the not-always-predictable nature of Bruce's responsibilities, there will sometimes be last minute changes to the schedule; the Chancellor's Web page at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/index.htm always has the latest office-hour schedule.

As always, if the above hours do not work for you or if you would prefer a more private setting, just arrange a time by calling the Chancellor's Office and Paula Marcec-Ehrfurth at ext. 2207.

Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, Prof. Fermanich win Mayor's Beautification Awards
This just in: Mary Ann Cofrin Hall has earned UW-Green Bay a Mayor's Beautification Award at the annual award luncheon held earlier today (Thursday, Nov. 9) in downtown Green Bay. MAC Hall was a recipient in a new category: sustainable design. Congratulations also to Prof. Kevin Fermanich, whose watershed education work and Baird Creek efforts won him the honor for environmental protection. Look for more in the next LOG.

Publicity for UW-Green Bay Veteran Appreciation Reception
That's what Prof. David Coury in Humanistic Studies tells us, and he has some interesting programming to back that up:

• Friday, Nov. 10, 2 p.m., Alumni Room, University Union, Prof. Derek Jeffreys lectures on "Is Critical Thinking Morally Neutral? Education and the Person"

• Dean Bakopoulos, executive director of the Wisconsin Humanities Council, and the author of Please Don't Come Back from the Moon, visits campus later this month. On Thursday, Nov. 30, there will be a book signing and reading in the Christie Theatre from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. The next day, Friday the 1st, he will lead an open discussion on "The Value of the Humanities" at noon in MAC 224.

All are invited. Sponsored by Humanistic Studies, the Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Sigma Tau Delta, and the Humanities Club.

Next week (Nov. 13 and 18) is International Education Week
The list is too long and sprawling to insert here, but if you're interested, scroll down to the very end of this column. Allow some time, too. It's a fair-size list.

Jordanian educator to visit UW-Green Bay next week
Mohammad H. Mousa Maharmeh, head teacher at the Pioneer Centre for Gifted and Talented Students in Amman, Jordan, will visit the UW-Green Bay campus Tuesday (Nov. 14) to meet with faculty, students, area educators and other members of the campus community. Maharmeh will be in Green Bay as part of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program. His host will be Christopher Wagner, principal of Green Bay Preble High School. Maharmeh will speak to a campus and community audience at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Alumni Rooms of the University Union. His topic will be education in Jordan and perspectives on education in the United States. The Pioneer Centre for Gifted an Talented Students is a first-of-its-kind public school in Amman. Jay Harris, UW-Green Bay coordinator of international projects, has more information about Maharmeh's visit.

Storm-water management plan gets public session on campus
A public informational meeting about the campus storm water management plan is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall 137. The meeting will consist of a half-hour formal presentation followed by Q&A concerning the draft storm water management plan completed in April 2006. A slide presentation and exhibits displaying the recommended improvements will be part of the session. The storm water management plan includes maps for existing watershed areas, waterways, banks, and shorelines, floodplains, environmental corridors, wetlands, ponds and detention basins, storm water drainage facilities, drainage problem areas, existing and proposed land use, soils, and recommended improvement and/or repairs. The plan analyzes existing drainage systems, identifies potential impacts of known future development, assesses existing and potential infiltration, models water quality, recommends system improvements, proposes an implementation plan for any and all recommendations, and documents best management practices. Representatives from campus, UW System, the state DOA/Division of State Facilities, and Omnni Associates will be on hand to answer questions and receive comments. If you have any questions or comments prior to this meeting, please contact Bob Givens at Omnni Associates, (920) 735-6900.

Copies available online, or at the libraries
You may obtain a draft copy of the storm water management plan by downloading the file from the Web site http://www.uwsa.edu/capbud/stormwater.htm. Reference copies are available at the Brown County Central Library and the UW-Green Bay David A. Cofrin Library.

Riddle says early tickets to 'Chicago' might be advisable
Prof. Laura Riddle, chair of the UW-Green Bay Theatre program, says that with the production of "Chicago" running next weekend only, theatregoers might consider buying tickets now. Tickets in advance ($22 for adults, $15 for seniors and students) may be purchased through the University Ticketing Service at (920) 465-2217 or (800) 328-8587 or online at http://www.uwgb.edu/tickets/.

Magazine touts Phuture Phoenix; Mrs. Shepard credits GBAPS, Walsh
The Oct. 24 issue of the local magazine fyi! Is highlighted by a three-page splash on the Phuture Phoenix program, headlined "Giving children hope for the future." Organizer Cyndie Shepard is quoted, "This is probably the most looked-forward-to field trip in these kids' lives. They can't wait to come here. It's a big deal for them."

Clarification: The article credits many volunteers and partners for making Phuture Phoenix Day possible, including Sodexho dining services. In truth, notes Mrs. Shepard, while the lunches for all 1,500 children and mentors were served at UW-Green Bay, the meals were provided free of charge to participants through the generosity of the Green Bay Area Public Schools. Additionally, donor Ann Walsh deserves credit for providing free ice cream to the visiting schoolchildren to cap their day on campus.

'Tuesdays with Morrie' author Albom will do book signing
Columnist and author Mitch Albom speaks next Tuesday evening (Nov. 14) at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $39 and $49. A post-event book signing is being advertised, as well. Click http://www.wcpresents.com/index.html.

Report from the brown-bag basketball lunch
Faculty and staff at the 21st annual Brown-Bag Basketball Lunch on Tuesday heard optimism from head coaches Kevin Borseth and Tod Kowalczyk. Borseth said his veteran team isn't flashy, will be severely tested by a killer non-conference schedule, and doesn't have much size... but is basically the same group that managed to win 23 games a year ago. Kowalczyk listed interior depth as a great strength and experienced perimeter depth as a minor concern, but said his men's team enters the season with high hopes of contending for the Horizon League championship. The women open Friday night at tough Kansas State, while the men travel to Oakland (Mich.) for a rare Sunday afternoon opener. Follow the action at http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/.

A final word on men's soccer
The team's 14 wins tied for fourth-best in Phoenix history and was the most since the team's all-time winningest season in 1992 (16-2-1. Senior forward Joshua Okoampa finished his career fourth all-time on the Phoenix scoring list with 36 goals, 14 this season. UW-Green Bay (14-6-0) reached the finals of the Horizon League tournament.

Teammates establish fund for family of former student-athlete
You may have heard or noticed around campus that two former Phoenix women's basketball players, Amy Fieck ('06) and Marcy Dixon ('07), are spreading the word about a memorial fund to benefit the family of Jill Smits ('07), a friend and former four-year letterwinner for the Phoenix volleyball team. The recent and sudden death of Jill's younger brother, and various health and other challenges for their friend and her family, motivated the pair's action. Fieck and Dixon send word that "Anyone interested in making a financial contribution to the memorial fund can forward donations to The Smits Family Memorial Fund, Associated Bank, 200 N. Adams Street, Green Bay, WI 54301."
