UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 38, No. 26, October 30, 2006     /     Log Archive

On this date five years ago, it was reported that in Leuven, Belgium, a group calling itself the Pumpkin Liberation Army had swiped dozens and dozens of would-be Halloween pumpkins because it opposed their "improper" use and would re-purpose the newly freed squash as soup for the needy. The movement apparently never carved a niche, however, smashed by public indifference. Should have made pies, maybe. In real news today:

Congressional debate draws more than 400 to Phoenix Rooms
More than 400 people packed the Phoenix Rooms Thursday night for a debate between the candidates for the 8th Congressional District seat. Republican John Gard and Democrat Steve Kagen debated issues ranging from the war in Iraq to stem cell research. The one-hour debate was sponsored by the UW-Green Bay College Republicans and College Democrats, Project VOTE of Brown County and the WisPolitics.com political news service.

News coverage of the debate is available on the Green Bay Press-Gazette Web site at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061027/GPG0101/610270640/1207.

UW-Green Bay surplus property sales expand to online service
Efforts to conveniently sell the University's surplus property are expanding. UW-Green Bay will list major surplus items for sale through the Wisconsin Surplus Online Auction at http://wisconsinsurplus.com. Until now, UW-Green Bay has held surplus sales on campus for items such as computers, office furniture and other equipment. Unique items such as surplus Army jeeps, Cushman workhorses, and trailers also have been listed for sale to the public. Another item that has been listed is cedar siding from the Lambeau Cottage.

Campus sales will continue, occasionally
The sale of surplus property provides much-needed revenue for the state of Wisconsin and the campus. In addition to using the online auction service, UW-Green Bay will continue to hold occasional on-campus sales of the University's surplus property. Announcements of the sales — including dates, times, locations and items for sale — will be made online at http://www.uwgb.edu/purchasing/storesSurplus/surplusForSale.htm.

Snapshots from Campus Preview Day
Participation in a Campus Preview Day is a top indicator of whether a high school student will enroll here. It's a big day. Check out some fun images from last week's sessions at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

'Steps to Make a Difference'... really did, once again
A quick recap, by the numbers: more than 200 walkers, $10,900 raised for six nonprofit organizations, nearly $35,000 total over the event's four-year history. We'll have a full report later this week on the "Steps to Make a Difference Walk" organized by students in the Public and Nonprofit Management class and the Student Civics Club. Look for a "photoblog" and more.

The problem for business is not a shortage of talent, Prof. Russ writes
Meir Russ, UW-Green Bay associate professor of Business Administration, weighed in last week on problems a perceived shortage of talent is causing business in the new knowledge-based economy. In a letter to The Economist of London, Russ argues that the problem is not a shortage of talent, but of mismanaging talent. Famous Dave, 'Elevator Pitch Contest' highlight entrepreneurs' gathering
The date for the Green Bay Area Entrepreneur's Connection has been changed to Feb. 15, 2007 from Nov. 1, 2006. The change provides an opportunity to include additional speakers and partners and to avoid conflict with other statewide conferences focused on assisting entrepreneurs. The Entrepreneur's Connection conference, now in its third year, takes place Feb. 15 at the KI Convention Center. Dave Anderson, founder of the Famous Dave's Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que franchise, will be the keynote speaker. The conference also will include an "Elevator Pitch Contest," one of the latest business crazes. Business people will pitch their ideas to a panel of experts, each allotted only about the time span of an elevator ride. For more information about the Entrepreneur's Connection, including attendance, sponsorship or booth information, contact Christina Trombley, director of the UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center, at tromblec@uwgb.edu.

Extension spokesman Giroux lands key post with UW System
He's a former National Guard journalist and Red Cross and Alliant Energy communicator, and he currently serves as director of public information for the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The appointment of Dave Giroux as UW System executive director for communications and external relations is seen as a step in reorganizing the System's PR efforts. Bruce Shepard, UW-Green Bay chancellor, served on the search committee. Click http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2006/r061027.htm.

Regent with UW-Green Bay ties touts adult learning
Did you see the interview with UW System Regent Mary Quinnette Cuene? A 1988 UW-Green Bay grad and current faculty member at NWTC, she stresses the importance of bringing degree opportunities to nontraditional students. The interview for the UW-Extension newsletter is published at http://www.uwex.edu/publications/action/EIA9/page2.cfm.

Follow-up on UW-M student government investigation
The recently reinstated UW-Milwaukee Student Association suspended a member of the student Senate who is at the center of an investigation. For newspaper coverage, see http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=523923.

Barrett at UW-O
UW-Madison lecturer Kevin Barrett spoke at UW-Oshkosh last week. In the aftermath, it was interesting to see the editorial page of the Oshkosh newspaper (sometimes fairly critical of the UW) say mostly positive things about the experience. Snap! Crackle! Swish! Coach Logan VanderVelden in Battle Creek
The Battle Creek (Mich.) Knights of the International Basketball League announced last week that Logan VanderVelden will be on the Kellogg Arena sidelines as head coach. VanderVelden, a standout on UW-Green Bay's 1994 NCAA tournament team, played two years for the Knights and also professionally overseas in Switzerland, Portugal, Japan and Venezuela. His resume includes one season in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Buzzer-beater goal keeps men's NCAA soccer hopes alive
Underdog Detroit had the UW-Green Bay Phoenix all but beaten Saturday, but a last-second goal by freshman David Znaty forced overtime, and Znaty scored again to give the Phoenix a 2-1 win in a Horizon League tournament opener. UW-Green Bay (13-5-0) will play Butler in one semifinal this weekend. For more, click http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/102806aaa.html.

Women close strong year with playoff loss
Disappointed by an opening-round loss at Detroit in the Horizon League tournament, the Phoenix women's soccer team nonetheless concluded its 2006 season with its best record in more than a decade, at 8-7-2. Senior Stephanie Gross, of Fond du Lac, was chosen first-team all-Horizon for the third straight year, and senior defender Dixie Schubert of Wisconsin Rapids made second team. Click http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/wigb-w-soccer-body.html.

Cross-country results
The Phoenix women's team placed fifth, the men seventh, and senior Nathaneal Brown (12th) was the team's top individual finisher at the Horizon League cross-country championships last weekend in Indianapolis. Click http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/c-xc/recaps/102806aaa.html.

Keep thinking Shorewood
It says here that the discounts keep coming on food, beverage and merchandise at Shorewood, at least for a couple of days: http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/.

Next installments of 'Energy Independence Film Festival'
Student organizers tell us that next Monday (Nov. 6) is the second night of the Energy Independence Film Festival. From 6 until 9 p.m. in MAC 111, award-winning films will be shown illuminating issues such as climate change and renewable energy. Admission is free.

• Films on Nov. 6 include "Power Shift" (hosted by Cameron Diaz, it offers ideas on how individuals can impact climate change), "Wind Over Water" (exploring offshore wind farms), "Kilowatt Ours" (bringing us up to speed on renewable energy), and "Out of Balance" (argues that ExxonMobil has unduly influenced the government and media, and how citizens can make a difference).

• Additional films including "Earth To America," a comedy starring Will Farrell, Steve Martin, Jack Black, and others, will be shown on Monday, Nov. 20 in the Christie Theater.

Social Work students to show film regarding U.S.-Mexico border
Neko Elizondo, a master's degree student in the Social Work program, tells us a student group is planning a showing of "Dying to Live" — "a profound look at the human face of immigration along the US-Mexican border." The showing takes place in the Christie Theatre from noon to 1 p.m. this Thursday (Nov. 2) and again next Monday (Nov. 6).

Senior Resource Fair is for UW-Green Bay students
Shiyanke Goonetilleke, a program development assistant in the Office of Student Life, wants the campus to be aware that a Senior Resource Fair is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 8. Students can learn about car insurance, apartment rentals, establishing credit, auto loans, checking accounts, credit card use, student loan consolidation; they can learn about staying connected after graduation, Commencement registration and tickets, orders for the Class Ring and the diploma frames, about the purchase of caps and gowns, and they can have a formal cap and gown portrait taken. Sponsored by Senior Resources Planning Committee. Call 2200, ext. 40 with questions.

Odds 'n' ends from first 'Downtown Third Thursdays'
Program organizers report back that this month's first installment in UW-Green Bay's new "Downtown Third Thursdays" series graded out well. The pre-election report by guest lecturer Prof. Scott Furlong drew an attendance of three dozen, better than 90 percent of whom were neither downtown residents nor graduates of UW-Green Bay, and "compared to other public lectures" was rated by 95 percent as somewhat better or much better.

'To spend less on gas, lose the spare tire'
That was the headline over a story in the Oct. 26 edition of the Washington Post, called to our attention by an environmentally minded LOG reader. A study by University of Illinois professor Sheldon H. Jacobson will appear in the October-December issue of the Engineering Economist. It says adult men and women on average are at least 24 pounds heavier than their counterparts were in 1960. Jacobson estimates that today's automobiles are burning about 1 billion gallons more annually as a result of this additional adiposity.

Luddism 2.0? Or a reasonable response to high prices, slow loading?
Finally... Perhaps you've seen media attention to a recent poll in the United Kingdom that finds a significant number of households lack Internet access, and many don't plan to pursue it. If not, do what at least some refuse to do, and click http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6085412.stm.
