UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 38, No. 95, April 19, 2007     /     Log Archive

Leftover from last Thursday's Kurt Vonnegut Jr. reminiscence: One of the early plays staged in the 1970s in UW-Green Bay's then-new University Theatre was his absurdist "Happy Birthday, Wanda June." And honk twice if you've ever heard a shades-wearing, wannabe-cool guy repeat the comeback, maybe from "Breakfast of Champions," that goes something like this:
Waitress: "How can you see anything in the dark, with those sunglasses on?"
Protagonist: "Can't. The real show is inside my head."
And so it goes. In news today:

Recent UW-Green Bay graduate now at Virginia Tech
Faculty and staff in the sciences, especially those who remember student "stars," may recall recent UW-Green Bay biology graduate and award-winning reseacher Amanda Malueg. She is currently a graduate student in the Zoology Department at Virginia Tech. A faculty friend tells us that Amanda writes she is coping "about as well as can be expected," and the spirit of unity and support on her campus has lifted spirits somewhat. "It has been wonderful to hear from so many people, and to have good friends here to turn to," she says. Her e-mail address is malual22@vt.edu.

Another alumna's story
Nichole (Wren) Williams, a soccer player for the Phoenix women's team from 1994-97, plans a ministry gathering Friday in Blacksburg, Va., to talk and reflect with students who are members of her Athletes in Action group at Virginia Tech University. Nichole and her husband, Tom, have been with AIA for three years. Their ministry serves primarily student-athletes at the school. She says most students have gone home for the week, but at last writing it was possible both the baseball and softball teams would attempt some return to normalcy by hosting games this weekend, as scheduled. Former campus acquaintances or others interested in contacting Nichole can do so Nichole.Williams@aia.com.

Orange and Maroon Day at UW-Green Bay
Students and alumni of Virginia Tech have declared Friday (April 20) to be "Orange and Maroon Effect" Day in remembrance of the events that occurred on Monday. That's why the Student Government Association at UW-Green Bay is asking students, staff and faculty to consider wearing orange and maroon on Friday as a way to show that thoughts and prayers are with our counterparts in Virginia.

Images: Crane swings into action at Union
A little bit of demolition here, a little excavation there, but the real work on the University Union didn't truly begin until recently, when general contractor Miron Construction rolled in the big crane. A couple of flare-filled snapshots at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/photoblog/07unioncrane.htm.

Union's student designers win big graphics, web awards
Student Katie Helein, the graphic artist for Good Times Programming and the University Union, won 1st place in two of seven categories of the graphics competition at the National Association for Campus Activities — Northern Plains Regional Conference in St. Paul, Minn., this past weekend. Student Duke Bobber, the University Union Web master, won 1st place for his design of the Good Times Web site. Good Times Advisor, Grant Winslow, from the Office of Student Life was presented with the Associates Choice Award which is awarded to one of 100 school staff members by the Agent and Artist members for "working toward increased understanding between the Association and the associate members."

Free golf at Shorewood! (If you'll 'ranger' a little)
Shorewood Golf Course has excellent volunteer opportunities for anyone who loves spending time on a golf course. "We are looking for responsible individuals to act as golf rangers and are willing to commit 8 hours per week at the golf course. In return, golf rangers would receive a full golf and cart membership to Shorewood Golf Course for the 2007 season." If you or anyone you know might be interested, please have them inquire with Dan Murphy at Shorewood or via e-mail at murphyd@uwgb.edu.
