UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 38, No. 101, April 30, 2007     /     Log Archive

This is the LOG newsletter for UW-Green Bay faculty and staff. Tuesday is May 1. Centuries ago in Europe, the first of May was a time for lavish Maypoles and spring fertility festivals and the like. In the late 1800s the date became identified with labor and socialist causes after the infamous Haymarket killings in Chicago. Later, Soviet leaders appropriated May Day as an occasion to flex communist military might and parade tanks and ICBMs around Red Square. No doubt because of limited commercial appeal - not much for Hallmark to work with in any of that - most Americans today generally let May Day pass unobserved. We won't. It's May Day! And here's the news:

Campus Vending: apple icon is clue to 'Right Choice for a Healthier You'
UW-Green Bay's vending provider, Konop Vending, has implemented a new program called "The Right Choice for a Healthier You." Look for the apple (icon) for items considered to be "healthier for you" when selecting items from campus vending machines. It says here that "Konop endorses a healthier lifestyle and is following established guidelines to support balanced nutrition: Nutrition education and exercise are the 'Right Choice for a Healthier You!'" For more information on healthy nutrition, go to http://www.MyPyramid.gov
*******

For any issues regarding campus vending, including equipment malfunctions, refunds, or suggestions for product mix, please email Rick Warpinski, University Union director, at warpinsr@uwgb.edu.

Cofrin Friends tout gift book idea
It's a season for retirements, departures, promotions, graduations, etc., and The Friends of the Cofrin Library offer a reminder on a nice gift idea. You can honor a friend, colleague or family member with a donation in their name toward a book for the Library. A bookplate inscribed with your honoree's name will be placed inside a new book. The honoree receives notification, and students and faculty across campus benefit from an addition to the Library collection. Interested? Click http://www.uwgb.edu/library/friends/giftbook.html

Bruce Shepard, video star
Relatively new on the Admissions website is a welcome-to-campus video featuring our own Chancellor Bruce Shepard. Nicely done, too. If you're curious, click http://www.uwgb.edu/admissions/welcome/

Reminder: Technology Forum is Thursday, May 3
Faculty and staff are invited to attend the 10th annual Technology Forum on Thursday, (May 3) in the Union's 1965 Room, with hour-long sessions at 1:30 and 3 p.m. For more: http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive38/2007apr26.htm#technology

Pam Stoll '74 gets big exposure in Sunday's Press-Gazette
The photography of former UW-Green Bay Alumni Association President Pam Stoll got some coverage in the Sunday edition of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Her work has been selected for exhibit at the State Capitol. She puts in a plug for her campus experience, too, saying her inspiration comes from the creative instructors at UW-Green Bay who taught her in the 1970s how to blend "ecology into all disciplines, including the arts." See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070429/GPG0101/704290709/1207

Prof. Martin, Harvey-Jacobs quoted on 'first-generation' hurdles
Wednesday's Press-Gazette quoted Admissions Director Pam Harvey-Jacobs and Human Development Prof. Ryan Martin extensively in an article on potential challenges faced by first-generation college students. Actually, they say, UW-Green Bay does a pretty good job of staying on top of things, and offering help. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070425/GPG0101/704250726.

Photo gallery: Was it 'Faculty Recognition' or 'Alumni Awards' night?
Props to Alumni Director Mark Brunette and the Alumni Association on their annual Alumni Awards reception, April 14. The recipients were obviously appreciative of the recognition, and the education they received during their UW-Green Bay years. Many thanked multiple faculty members who guided them along the way. Call-outs were made to professors Sager, Starkey, Ritch, Mannino; Kangayappan, Kellogg, Null and Hutchison, Fleurant, Baba, Yarbrough, Knowles, Smith and Johnson (and others we might have missed). Click here for a recap with photos http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

Brown bag lunch: 'Preventing Campus Violence'
Understand what you and others on campus can do when encountering a disruptive or violent individual. The program "Preventing Campus Violence" takes place Thursday (May 3) from noon to 1 p.m. in Alumni A of the University Union. Sponsored by the offices of the Dean of Students, Counseling & Health, Public Safety and Disability Services.

Reilly to form security commission
UW System President Kevin Reilly is moving forward with university plans to assess campus safety in the wake of the shootings at Virginia Tech. UW-Madison Police Chief Sue Riseling will lead a Systemwide university safety commission. See http://www.madison.com/archives/read.php?ref=/wsj/2007/04/24/0704240265.php.

Ex-chancellor Ward pushes campus safety
David Ward (the former Madison chancellor, not the former Green Bay prof), president of the American Council on Education, has joined other higher education officials in calling for the creation of a national center for campus public safety. Here's more on Thursday's 'Preventing Campus Violence' program
Recent events may have left you wondering what you would do in those situations.
Whom do you call if someone has a gun?
What do you do if a student is yelling at you?
How should you respond to someone who is feeling very depressed?
Get answers via this discussion of campus plans for responding to such situations. Bring your lunch and learn about your role in campus safety and how the campus is working to keep you safe, from noon to 1 p.m. this Thursday (May 3) in Alumni A, University Union. Sponsored by Public Safety, Dean of Students Office, Counseling & Health Center and Disabilities Services.

New Music, Hand Drumming offer prototypical atypical concert
The New Music Ensemble and Hand Drumming Ensemble will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 4) in the University Theater. As usual, expect the unexpected. The New Music program includes a student group composition and works by Frankenthal Prof. Cheryl Grosso and the late, great John Cage. The Hand Drumming Ensemble will perform three pieces written by Grosso: one traditional Afro-Cuban piece, one that is the result of a composition assignment Grosso gave the ensemble, and one that will feature student tap dancing. For more, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007apr.htm#ensembles

Steak Fry sizzles
Final numbers not in yet, but we're hearing only good things about the 2007 edition of the annual Packers/Phoenix Steak Fry, held last week at the Lambeau Field Atrium. The fundraiser for Phoenix Athletics again raised more than $50,000, and attracted 650 or more guests.

Cinco de Mayo community celebration
The Green Bay Latino Business Association's Cinco de Mayo celebration will be held Saturday and Sunday (May 5 and 6), starting 10 a.m. each day at the Brown County Fairgrounds in De Pere. Events and activities planned include a car show, Mexican traditional dances, bands, and food, raffles, a soccer tournament, a mechanical bull, a rodeo and more. Volunteers are needed. Try Cristian Rubio, Latino Business Association, Inc at rubici23@uwgb.edu

And Will Ferrell will play him in the movie
The story here says that UW-Whitewater's nationally renowned (or nationally embarrassing) slacker, 13th year senior Johnny Lechner, is ready to graduate. We've heard that before, but always a sucker for more, we send you to http://www.gazetteextra.com/slacker042707.asp
