Vol. 38, No. 142, August 13, 2007     /     Log Archive

Absolutely no kidding here: Please stay a respectable distance away from anything that looks like SWAT training if you're heading out the door this Monday. A delivery person who took a wrong turn on his way onto campus, just now, tells us the SWAT folks aren't fooling around in keeping people away, simulation or not. In news today:

Humanistic Studies to launch Great Books community reading group
Read all about it! The Humanistic Studies academic unit at UW-Green Bay is launching a campus-and-community Great Books reading group this September. For each book, an HUS faculty member will lead discussion, free and open to the general public, at the Brown County Central Library board. (The series picks up on the One Book, One Community concept.) Discussion sessions are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month:

Sept. 11 — Kafka's The Trial (David Coury, German)
Oct. 9 — Melville's Bartleby the Scriviner (David Voelker, History)
Nov. 13 — J Austen Persuasion (Aeron Haynie, English)
Dec. 11 — Garcia Marquez's 100 Yrs of Solitude (Cristina Ortiz, Spanish)

For more information, people may call the HUS Office at ext. 2348, or Prof. Coury at 465-2097. If successful, a second series will be offered in spring.

Reminder: Free trial period at the Kress, and special rates
The Kress Events Center will be opening its new fitness center on Tuesday (Aug. 14) All UW-Green Bay employees and students are invited to try out — at no cost through Aug. 30 — the new fitness center, open gym times and aquatic facilities. The annual fee for faculty/staff will be $215. Individual students, who contribute significantly to capital costs and operation of the facility through student fees, are not charged an additional usage fee.

Watch for news coverage of SWAT exercise here
The Green Bay Police Department, Brown County Sheriff's Department and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay are conducting a joint training exercise Monday afternoon (Aug. 13) on the UW-Green Bay campus. About 60 SWAT officers will work their way through as many as five training scenarios. Watch for a summary of news coverage later this week. The news release announcing the exercise is http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007aug.htm#exercise.
