Today is Elvis Day at Graceland, marking the 30th anniversary of his death, which reminds us for some odd reason of the more recent passing of another American original, Tammy Faye Bakker. Those who spoofed her caked-on makeup and campy zeal could still admire her resilience. The Washington Post memorialized her as a pop-culture pioneer of modern media management: "Any time someone weeps shamefully yet resolutely in front of a bank of microphones (which people do all the time now), he or she owes some debt to Tammy Faye..." Americans are addicted to comeback stories; after an admittedly sub-par LOG last time out, here's our try:
• Chancellor quoted on security, budget issues
• Snapshots from a SWATdown
• ¡Teniendo un tiempo maravilloso!
• Bookstore stocks up on new Phoenix gear
• Former student hopes for Martha Stewart wedding
• Coffee talk with Bruce
• Lt. Wolff's family also part of UW-Green Bay family
• News from the budget table: nothing new
• Columnist says UW funding boosts economy
• Minnesota-Wisconsin tuition deal gets OK
Chancellor: Budget cuts squeeze campuses, security
UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard is quoted in a statewide news story today as to how budget erosion has forced tough choices with campus security. Shepard, who is co-chairing Gov. Doyle's task force on the issue, was among those asked to comment on a UW System security report. Click http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=648126
Snapshots from a SWAT meet
If you missed it, police from UW-Green Bay, the city of Green Bay and Brown County police participated Monday in a drill to assess the level of emergency readiness in the event of an active shooter, hostage situation or other emergency on campus. ¡Saludos! ¡Teniendo un tiempo maravilloso!
The UW-Green Bay folks up at the Stone Harbor resort in Sturgeon Bay send greetings - they're having a wonderful time! - with a marvelously impressive first-time enrollment of 105 for this first-time offering of a special Spanish Immersion for Professionals week. Prof. Cristina Ortiz is the lead instructor for this Outreach-sponsored short course.
Bookstore stocks up on new Phoenix 'insignia'
Just noticed: There's a sizeable shipment, just in, of new apparel bearing the brand-new Phoenix Athletics insignia. Visit the Phoenix Bookstore if you want to be a fashion leader in this regard.
Vote UW-Green Bay: Former student vies for Martha Stewart wedding on NBC
Jason Alexander, a mid-1990s student here and a former roommate of Advancement's own Shane Kohl, is looking for votes to win a deluxe Martha Stewart wedding. Jason and his fiancée, Alisa, are among couples entered in an NBC Today Show Wedding Special promotion. They were on national TV Wednesday; they're archived on the Web now. Lt. Wolff's family also part of UW-Green Bay family
There has been much media coverage this week celebrating heroism and remembering the one-year anniversary of the death of Lt. Arnie Wolff, killed in the line of duty. Wolff's station No. 5 firehouse also covered the UW-Green Bay campus where his son and daughter (an entering new freshman) attend college. The UW-Green Bay link is a footnote deep in a fine Green Bay Press-Gazette article at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070813/GPG0101/708130500/1207
Back to the negotiating table for budget conference committee
A blog we follow says the Legislature's budget conference committee, meeting today in Madison, doesn't seem to be making much progress. Their previous session - which included heated discussion of the UW System component of the state budget - didn't go particularly smoothly, or last very long, either. For a summary of that get-together, http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=645038
Cap Times guest column says UW funding boosts economy
Margaret Krome of Madison is a member of the state Board of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and an occasional columnist. She writes that insufficient funding of the UW System endangers economic growth. Click http://www.madison.com/tct/opinion/column/204859
Joint Finance signs off on Minnesota-Wisconsin tuition deal
Wisconsin's Joint Committee on Finance has voted 15-1 to approve revisions to the state's tuition reciprocity agreement with Minnesota. Click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070816/GPG0101/70816060/1978
