UW-Green Bay total up 4.3 percent, still under $6,000
Wisconsin residents who are full-time undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will pay tuition and student fees totaling $5,959 for the 2007-08 academic year under an operating budget approved Aug. 7 by the Board of Regents. With segregated fees here actually a few dollars lower than last year, the total increase is only 4.3 percent. Other Green Bay numbers: undergrad non-resident, $13,532; in-state grad student, $7,301; out-of-state grad student, $17,911. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007aug.htm#tuition.
Headline: 'UW tuition increases by smallest percentage in years'
The Green Bay Press-Gazette localizes the statewide story with UW-Green Bay numbers and quotes from Dean of Students Sue Keihn, at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070808/GPG0101/708080584/1207/GPGnews.
UW System points to budget uncertainty, relatively light (5.5%) increase
Uncertain about the level of state funding that will be available to the UW System when the state's 2007-09 biennial budget is decided, UW System President Kevin P. Reilly says that a budget that would increase tuition at the university's four-year campuses by only 5.5 percent in 2007-08 is the lowest percentage increase in seven years, and the lowest dollar increase in five years. For the full news release, see http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2007/r070807.htm.
Listen: Prof. Jeffreys testifies before Regents on salary shortcomings
UW-Green Bay Associate Professor of Humanistic Studies Derek Jeffreys received a big round of applause from the hearing room when he finished his remarks to the UW System Board of Regents meeting Tuesday in Madison. Jeffreys asked the Regents to consider salary needs across the UW System in setting the coming year's tuition and spending plans. He said professors certainly aren't getting rich — citing his own starting salary of about $40,000 — and pointed to the many negative consequences of lagging pay. The meeting's webcast is archived. Prof. Jeffreys talks for three minutes at about the 1 hour, 52 minute mark. http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/
State benefit cuts could be problematic, official warns
A representative of the Department of Employment Trust Funds has advised state legislators that he believes new proposals requiring state employees to pay a larger portion of their health insurance premiums and pension funds, as written, might not be constitutional or even produce much cost savings. See http://www.madison.com/tct/news/204256.
UW Extension Chancellor David Wilson visits campus this Thursday
Chancellor David Wilson of UW-Extension and the UW-Colleges is visiting the UW-Green Bay campus this Thursday morning (Aug. 9). The visit fits with his statewide outreach, get-acquainted and advocacy efforts; he'll also visit UW-Extension offices in Brown County and Marinette; meet with County Executive Tom Hinz; and sit for an interview with the Green Bay Press-Gazette. While at UW-Green Bay, he'll meet with the Division of Outreach and Adult Access staff for a dialog concerning his vision of the future. Barbara McClure-Lukens, assistant director of Outreach and Adult Access, is coordinating details of Wilson's campus visit.
UW-Green Bay grad's logistic skills benefit Army in Iraq
In her civilian job, Lisa (Mrotek) Nelson coordinates shipments and supplies for Target department stores. While stationed in Kuwait, the Manitowoc native, UW-Green Bay business grad and U.S. Army master sergeant coordinated procurement and distribution of weapons for front-line troops in Iraq. The logistics specialist holds the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medals in recognition of outstanding service in deployments dating to the first Gulf War. Her hometown newspaper carried a great feature profile of her at http://www.htrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070805/MAN0101/708050450.
Press-Gazette profiles UW-Green Bay alumnus Chernick
The Press-Gazette gave prominent play today to one of UW-Green Bay's most prominent alumni, Rick Chernick. He's a recipient of both the Chancellor's Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award winner. The article describes his family's success with Camera Corner/Connecting Point: http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070806/GPG03/708060491/1247.
State spending priorities have changed
An editorial in the La Crosse Tribune observes that budget slippage for the UW System is a chronic problem. 12 percent of state general fund spending two decades ago, it's 7 percent now. See http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2007/08/07/opinion/editorial/ourview07.txt.
Lt. Gov. Lawton: Budget cuts will hurt state economy
One-time UW-Green Bay student and current Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton is calling for increased support for public higher education. She wrote a guest column for the La Crosse Tribune at http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2007/08/06/opinion/editorial/01lawton06.txt.
