Vol. 38, No. 65, February 19, 2007     /     Log Archive

Today is Monday (Feb. 19), Presidents Day, one of three dates in play had you intended to observe George Washington's birthday by taking a day off. Our first president was born Feb. 11, 1731. During his lifetime, however, the Gregorian calendar supplanted the Julian and his birthday was recalculated as Feb. 22, 1732. Then, in 1971, the U.S. government made it a three-day federal weekend on the third Monday in February. Hope this trivia enhances your enjoyment of Presidents Day. In campus news:

Fourth Estate scores another 'Best of Midwest' win
Adjunct instructor and this year's Fourth Estate adviser, Tani Grimh, shares word of a big win for the student-run campus newspaper. Eighteen students represented the 4E at the Associated Collegiate Press conference in Minneapolis. Sunday they learned they had received first place in the Best of the Midwest competition... for the second year in a row. "This is a highly coveted award, won solely through the hard work and dedication of the entire Fourth Estate staff," Grimh says. Watch for full details in the weekly newspaper, and a future LOG, but for now, congratulations to these award-winning UW-Green Bay students.

Budget provision would add bargaining rights for faculty, academic staff
The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram carried a story recently about the provision in Gov. Jim Doyle's budget that would offer UW System faculty and academic staff the chance to choose whether they want collective bargaining rights. See http://www.leadertelegram.com/story.asp?id=79540.

They loved Bartell's presentation
Audience evaluations were one big Valentine for Prof. Denise Bartell, who delivered last week's Downtown Third Thursdays lecture on "Romantic Love in America: A Brief History and Exploration of the Importance of Love in Our Culture." About three dozen community members attended the program. Organizers say 97 percent of those attending completed evaluations (nice response rate) and nearly all gave excellent ratings.

Sound familiar? 'State scraps computer project'
