UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 38, No. 59, February 8, 2007     /     Log Archive

The so-called "Lust in Space" case of the diaper-wearing astronaut assailant is a textbook example of effective public relations. Really. Posters to a top PR list-serve agree NASA's immediate statement - "Lisa Nowak performed very well on her shuttle mission. We are all family here at NASA and we support our families. We don't understand at this time anymore than anyone else what has happened" - was simple but top-notch, way better than a terse "no comment." It showed compassion but stayed neutral, and anticipated a key question by affirming she performed professionally on agency time. It matters what organizations say. In news today:

The site includes a list of 100 and more ways members of the University community are connecting learning to life. To enter the site, click http://www.uwgb.edu/connect/. Faculty and staff with additional examples of how they or their students are connecting with the community should contact Scott Hildebrand in the Office of Marketing and University Communication at hildebrs@uwgb.edu.

Aldrete book examines floods in ancient Rome, invites New Orleans comparison
UW-Green Bay Prof. Gregory Aldrete has a new book out that details flooding in ancient Rome. The book, "Floods of the Tiber in Ancient Rome," was released this month by Johns Hopkins University Press. Aldrete, professor of humanistic studies, says how the Romans dealt with floods offers lessons for modern cities such as New Orleans. To read a news release on the book, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007feb.htm#Aldrete.

It's tax time: VITA students volunteer... now with e-filing
Starting Monday, UW-Green Bay student volunteers will again provide free income tax preparation at numerous campus and community locations. And, for the first time, they will offer electronic filing of state and federal tax returns. The students are members of the national organization Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), helping primarily low-income individuals and families, the elderly and students. For locations and times, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007feb.htm#tax.

Bob and Jan Pum safe after killer Groundhog Day tornado
Prof. Emeritus Bob Pum and former Phoenix tennis coach Jan Pum send word they are both OK, and "thankful survivors" of the Feb. 2 tornadoes that devastated Central Florida. One of the tornadoes hit very near their winter home in The Villages near Lady Lake, Fla. - a familiar dateline for those following news of the deadly storms (at least 20 killed). The Villages development saw 500 homes destroyed and more than a thousand damaged, but the Pums experienced high winds but nothing life-threatening on their end, several miles away. Bob Pum expresses appreciation to all the UW-Green Bay friends who have contacted him and Jan in recent days: "Thank you... Cheers, and Best Wishes, to one and all."

Wengers to share observations on changes in China
UW-Green Bay Prof. Emeritus Robert Wenger and his wife, Lena, will discuss changes they have observed during five trips to China in a talk on campus Thursday, Feb. 15. Their talk is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Phoenix Rooms of the University Union. The Wengers have been to China five times since 1987, most recently in October and November of 2006. Read more about this Friends of the Cofrin Library event at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007feb.htm#China.

Former sax standout is now Zurich-based Googlestar
Featured in the next issue of "Inside" will be the cool interdisciplinary story of Randy Knaflic, UW-Green Bay jazz studies class of '95. With skills in music, IT and corporate headhunting, he was wooed by Microsoft, Amazon and Google before signing on as the talent scout who hires new Googlers for rapidly expanding branches in Europe, the Mideast and Africa. A recent Journal-Sentinel piece on Knaflic makes it sound like a great company to work for: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=560865

A new face in Human Resources
The Office of Human Resources announces the arrival of its newest staff member, Jolene Truckenbrod. Jolene will begin in her role as a Human Resources Assistant on Monday, Feb. 12. She will be assisting with both classified and unclassified recruiting, office management, and other various HR duties. Jolene is a graduate of UW-Stevens Point and brings nearly 10 years of experience in the Human Resources field with her to UW-Green Bay.

'Posters in the Rotunda' returns in April
Look for details Monday, but UW System is gearing up for another Posters in the Rotunda: A Celebration of Undergraduate Research at the State Capitol. This year's date will be Wednesday, April 18. UW-Green Bay faculty and staff might begin considering which student research stars they will nominate for the campus delegation.

Media blitz possible for Board of Regents
Our friends at UW System report high levels of advance media interest in this month's Board of Regents meeting in Madison, today and Friday (Feb. 8 and 9). One good guess: The proposal for a Systemwide "comprehensive admissions" policy is generating interest, with the always-hot topic of affirmative action a closely related issue. Stay tuned.

Video streaming of Friday's meeting
The Board of Regents meeting will be webcast from Madison via audio and video streaming from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday (Feb. 9). Go to http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/

Ode to Ody Fish
His name was memorable, his career more so. Some campus old-timers might recall Ody Fish, a member of the UW System Board of Regents for 17 years and a strong influence in Wisconsin politics, who died this week at age 81. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=562802

It's official: Two indoors for May Commencement 2007
It was in the Fourth Estate, it's on the Web, it must be official: For this year and this year only (next spring the Kress Center will be available for one big ceremony), UW-Green Bay will dispense with what in recent years had become an annual ritual of weather-watching, and just go ahead and book the Weidner Center for two ceremonies on the afternoon of Saturday, May 12. Division of majors is listed on the student page at http://www.uwgb.edu/commencement/graduates/may.htm#Session%20Breakdown%20Grads).

Bartell's 'Third Thursday's lecture to explore romantic love
Romantic love isn't all it's cracked up to be. That's an oversimplification of the next "Downtown Third Thursdays" lecture program, but Denise Bartell, assistant professor of human development, will explore the topic next Thursday morning (Feb. 15). For detail, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007feb.htm#downtown.

Guest speaker Famous Dave already making an impact at UW-Green Bay
John Landrum in Student Life shares the following: "We noted in the LOG that UWGB is a co-sponsor of Dave (Famous Dave's) Anderson's upcoming visit to Green Bay. Brings up a couple of points worth noting about leadership development offerings on campus. Faculty and staff might consider referring students they think would benefit from these programs":
• 'Stand and Deliver' training
Among Anderson's good works is the founding of the LifeSkills Center for Leadership in Minneapolis. One of the leadership training programs is "PATH to Greatness: Stand and Deliver". Past participants describe it as a "life changing experience," and have been highly motivated to bring it to UW-Green Bay so that other students could benefit as they have. The Office of Student Life is sponsoring this training for 16 successful applicants on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. "Talk about commitment," Landrum says, "That is 23 hours these students will spend in workshops in one weekend to develop their leadership skills!" Applications, due to Student Life by 4:30 this Friday, are available at: http://www.uwgb.edu/stulife/leadership/springdev.asp.
• Camera Corner/Connecting Point visit
No connection to Famous Dave, but also worth noting are plans for a Feb. 20 visit to Camera Corner-Connecting Point, the very successful local business owned by Rick Chernick, who with son Ryan are actively engaged alumni and loyal supporters of the University. Landrum says students will get a first-hand look at the technologies they as leaders will need in the future. Enrollment is limited to the first 20 students, who can use the same link: http://www.uwgb.edu/stulife/leadership/springdev.asp to register.

Basketball player Lawrence will watch from sidelines
Men's basketball announced this week that senior forward Josh Lawrence will sit out the rest of the season - concluding his collegiate career - because of recurring concern over a series of concussions suffered since his high school years. Lawrence, a four-year starter and one of the team's most popular players, is pursuing a degree in human development. See http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/020607aab.html

Big home dates for Phoenix men
The UW-Green Bay men's basketball team (13-11) begins its Horizon League stretch run when Youngstown State (10-14) visits tonight (Thursday, Feb. 8). On Saturday, the Phoenix (13-11) will seek a breakthrough win over a team from the upper half of the Division I power rankings when a solid Loyola team (16-9, Sagarin No. 115) visits the Resch for a 7:05 start. Tickets are still available. See http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/020707aab.html
