This is an abbreviated edition of the LOG newsletter for faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It's the first day of spring... the spring semester, that is. In news today:

Monday is the Chili Cookoff!
Let's see you do better

SBDC offers leadership, entrepreneurial programs
Phoenix women have 10-game winning streak

Phoenix men face tough one at Butler

It's free! It's the 14th annual! It's the Chili Cookoff!
Make plans to enjoy some homecooked chili next Monday (Jan. 22) when the 14th annual Chili Cookoff (and taste-off) takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Cloud Commons of the University Union. Sample mouth-watering entries from the University's best chili cooks... you'll be given a ballot as you enter... bowls, spoons, and crackers will be provided... choose your favorite and deposit a ballot in the "Giant Chili Vote Box." It's free and fun, part of Frost Fest activities.

Think you can do better? Why don't you enter?
If you are interested in entering your own pot of chili, contact Mary Ann Rose, SS 1400, ext. 2380. Some background: You must prepare and bring between 1 and 2 gallons of your favorite chili to Cloud Commons between 8 and 9 a.m. on Monday and give to University Dining Service staff. They will take your chili, refrigerate it and then heat it in time for the Cookoff. Your chili must be clearly marked with the chili name and your name (office name). You or a representative MUST be at your "chili station" to serve from 11:30-12:30 p.m. If your chili is served with accompaniments (i.e., spaghetti, onions, chopped hot peppers, etc.) you will need to provide those accompaniments. Everything else will be provided, including cloth aprons for use while serving. It is suggested that servers wear costumes which conveys the name of their entry. The registration deadline is this Friday at 4 p.m.; the limit is 20 entrants.

Act now! A few spots still open in 'Conversational Spanish'
Barbara McClure-Lukens informs us the class is mostly full, with only about a half-dozen slots still open for the free "Introductory Conversational Spanish" class for spring 2007. It's a continuing session for faculty and staff who have taken a previous Conversational Spanish session or who have a minimal background in Spanish. The class will meet in Rose Hall 230 on Tuesday afternoons for 10 weekly, 90-minute sessions, beginning Feb. 13. Complete information and registration link: http://www.uwgb.edu/outreach/events/spanish/.

Small Business Development Center offers leadership, entrepreneurial programs
UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center is accepting registrations for upcoming programs to assist business leaders and entrepreneurs. A two-day program on leadership is Jan. 24 and 25. The SBDC also is offering a 10-week intensive training program on entrepreneurship, each Thursday evening from Feb. 22 through April 26. Phoenix women look to extend 10-game winning streak
The UW-Green Bay women's basketball team (13-3, 4-0 in the Horizon League) seeks to extend its winning streak with home games at 7 p.m. this Thursday (Jan. 18) vs. Cleveland State and 3 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 20) vs. Youngstown State. Here's a remarkable stat: The current 10-game winning streak marks the eighth time in nine seasons they've had one that long. (The D-1 record is 16 straight, set during the 2005 season, and the overall record is 17, dating to 1984.) Win at Butler would be big for Phoenix men
The UW-Green Bay men's basketball team (10-8, 2-3) will get some national mention Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis and historic Hinkle Fieldhouse to play No. 18 Butler. There'll be no short turnaround this time - the Phoenix has a full week to prepare as it looks for the program's first win over a ranked opponent since December 1998, when Green Bay beat Wally Szczerbiak's No. 22 Miami (Ohio) team, 78-60.

Reminder: 'Four A's that spell trouble' workshop
The Disability Services Office is sponsoring an audio conference: DSS Issues - Attendance as an Accommodation: Four A's that Spell Trouble on Wednesday, January 17th from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Counseling & Health Conference Room (SS 1400). This audio conference features Dr. Jane Jarrow, president of Disability Access Information and Support (DAIS), and a skilled presenter who speaks about legal a educational mandates surrounding the participation of persons with disabilities in postsecondary setting. If you would like to attend please RSVP to the Disability Services Office (465-2841).

Inside Higher Ed 'blogger' was a former faculty member
At least two separate LOG readers, former longtime employees, wrote in to point out that the person who posted to a recent discussion at Inside Higher Ed - and who referenced early UW-Green Bay in arguing some of today's supposedly "brand-new" academic innovations aren't really new at all - shares the same name as 1970s faculty member Tom Abeles. A file news release describes Ables as "a chemist and humanist" who was an assistant professor in the environmental control concentration.
