Hockey legend Gump Worsley, 77, died last week at his home near Montreal. He was famous, of course, for being the last top NHL goalie to play without a facemask. The colorful Gump — rhymes with thump, bump and lump — once took a Bobby Hull slap shot square in the face and lived to tell the tale. "Anyone who wears one (a mask) is chicken," he supposedly told reporters. "Besides, my face is my mask." In news today:

Phoenix women's basketball makes AP Top 25 again!
This just in: For the third time in five years, the Phoenix women's basketball team has made the Associated Press Top 25! That's nearly unheard of for a program outside the so-called power conferences, but it's getting to be a habit for Coach Kevin Borseth and his program. For a look at their No. 24 ranking, see http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/rankings?poll=1&year=2007&week=13.

'Supernanny' visits UW-Green Bay family, tonight on national TV
The popular ABC reality program "Supernanny" and host Jo Frost pay a consulting visit to a Green Bay area family tonight (Monday, Jan. 29) in an episode to air at 8 p.m. on WBAY-TV 2. Suzanne and Shane Haines welcomed Frost and the cameras into their home to offer positive parenting and disciplinary advice concerning their two boys, ages 10 and 4. "My feeling is every family has different issues," Suzanne Haines said about going on national television. "There's no perfect family out there, and I think a lot of people can relate to seeing families that have issues. Obviously, that's one of the reasons I wrote to the show, because I was able to identify with a lot of other families." Shane Haines is a power plant operator with UW-Green Bay Facilities Management. Deer-control program begins anew in Arboretum
Carefully controlled bowhunting begins next Monday (Feb. 6) and will last though April 1 as UW-Green Bay renews its participation in an ongoing city and county program to control over-abundant suburban deer. Highly proficient and carefully screened archers will be permitted to hunt for deer at strategic sites in the Cofrin Arboretum, from elevated stands away from hiking and ski trails. (A high-angle perch ensures that if the target is not hit, the arrow goes directly into the ground.) Campus participation is based on evidence of overbrowsing of campus natural areas and risk of deer-vehicle collisions and disease. Last year, 14 deer were harvested from a campus population estimated at about 50 animals, well past normal carrying capacity. For those wishing to know more, a news release was issued when UW-Green Bay announced its participation last April: http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2006apr.htm#deer.
Doyle announces support for UW System's growth agenda
In an interview with the Associated Press, Gov. Jim Doyle's said his state of the state address tomorrow evening (Tuesday, Jan. 30) will be good news for the UW System and those who want the next state budget to reinvest in higher education. Read the story at http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2007/01/28/news/uw_0128.txt.
Shepard comments on today's news from Madison
In a letter this morning to UW-Green Bay faculty and staff, Chancellor Bruce Shepard shared the good news that Gov. Jim Doyle's proposed 2007-09 state budget would include additional resources for UW System growth, including partial funding to begin increasing enrollment at the Green Bay campus. "I cannot say enough about our community and private sector partners who have been such strong advocates and supporters of the Growth Agenda," Shepard said. "Their efforts clearly are paying off... I also very much appreciate the strong and consistent support of the Growth Agenda from local legislators of both political parties as month-after-month and, indeed, year-after-year, we have worked together toward this point. They understand that the future of our great state is not a partisan issue." Shepard cautioned that the budget is far from finalized — it has not yet even been presented to the Legislature — but the governor's support is a crucial and encouraging first step.
Chancellor's Office Hours change to Thursday, this week
Bruce Shepard's weekly walk-in office hour for faculty and staff has been re-scheduled this week. The correct time is 8 to 9 a.m. this Thursday (Feb. 1) in the Union's Common Grounds Coffeehouse.
Sodexho goes biodegradable with dinnerware!
Dining Services and the University Union have announced a move to biodegradable dinnerware. All dining areas will now be using new plates and bowls, with cups and straws coming soon! The new dinnerware biodegrades in 60 to 180 days naturally... production of dinnerware emits less carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases, with no chemical residues. The dinnerware is produced from natural products, such as corn, wheat starch, and potato starch Find out more at http://www.uwgb.edu/union.
Video streaming of today's Regents admissions forum is available online
As reported last week in the Log, the UW Board of Regents is hosting a statewide forum at 4 p.m. today (Monday, Jan. 29) to hear public reaction to the System's proposed freshman admissions policy. The forum is being carried over videoconferencing networks. Students, faculty, staff and the public may participate at UW-Green Bay in Room 137 of Mary Ann Cofrin Hall. If you're interested in watching the forum, live video streaming of the event is available online at http://www.wisconsin.edu/admissions/. The Board of Regents is expected to take action in February on the policy, which would give clear guidelines for comprehensive, individualized review of applicants for admission.
Newspaper describes admissions issue
Sunday's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel offered a preview of today's Board of Regents public feedback session on admissions. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=558010.

Phoenix men claim entertaining win on national TV
The UW-Green Bay men's basketball team (12-9, 4-4) got itself a nice road win on Saturday over UW-Milwaukee (7-16, 4-6) on ESPN2 national television. Freshman sensation Troy Cotton was not only the player of the game (23 points), he earned Horizon League player-of-the-week honors. New recruit Segura has compelling story
We normally don't frequent sports-chat Web sites or recruiting newsletters, but this link to a South Texas sports publication that was called to our attention is different. The story profiles UW-Green Bay signee Edgar Segura. A native of Mexico and the son of a professional player and coach, he has high hopes for obtaining an education. It's an interesting read at http://www.themonitor.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Details.cfm&StoryID=17590&Section=Sports,varsity.
