Fall Research Scholar: Feb. 6 is deadline for course-release grant
The UW-Green Bay Research Council is soliciting proposals for the Fall 2007 Research Scholar Program. The Program provides a three-credit course release to the successful applicant to work on his or her scholarship. The call for proposals is open to all full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty members. Applications may be submitted for the Spring or for the Fall. The Research Scholar will be expected to work on a specific research project and generate a tangible product during the semester of work (e.g., grant proposal, draft of manuscript, book proposal, or completed body of work for an exhibition). Applications for The Research Scholar: Fall 2007 must be submitted to the Institute for Research Office (WH 303) by 4 p.m. on Feb. 6. Guidelines and evaluation rubric are available from the Research Council Web site, http://www.uwgb.edu/rc.

Publicity for UW-Green Bay's greenhouse pledge
The AASHE — the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education — highlights UW-Green Bay in the first 2007 edition of its Bulletin newsletter. The lead item was Chancellor Bruce Shepard's promise to support the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, a pledge to develop a long-range plan to reduce and ultimately neutralize greenhouse gas emissions on the campus. Organizers seek to identify at least 200 college and university presidents who will become charter signatories at a major public summit in June 2007. The AASHE's Web site on the climate issue is at http://www.aashe.org/presidentsclimatecommitment.php

UW-Green Bay mid-year commencement on cable TV in January
UW-Green Bay's 2006 mid-year commencement ceremony will be televised this month on local cable television. Taped telecasts of the Dec. 16 commencement will be carried consecutive Saturdays in January on Time Warner Cable Television. Each telecast — Jan. 13, 20 and 27 — will begin at noon. The ceremonies can be viewed on cable Channel 4 in Green Bay, Howard, Suamico, Seymour, Kaukauna, Little Chute, Combined Locks, Kimberly, Wrightstown, Appleton and Greenville, and on cable Channel 2 in Neenah and Menasha. Time Warner digital customers also will be able to view UW-Green Bay commencement on Wisconsin on Demand (WIoD), Time Warner's local video-on-demand channel. The ceremony can be found on Channel 1111 under the categories of "All New" and "Special Events."

Reminder on 'high-performance teams' workshop on Feb. 13
A national-caliber speaker and author, Jane Boucher, visits campus Feb. 13 from 8:30 to 12:30 to speak on "How to Build a High Performance Work Team." This program is sponsored by the Academic Staff Professional Development Programming Committee, "and is open to all faculty, staff, and classified employees. Please encourage your team members to come". For more, check out this link: http://www.uwgb.edu/union/assets/pdf/workteam.pdf.

Funds available for academic staff development
The UW-Green Bay Academic Staff Professional Development Allocations Committee is happy to announce that funds remain to assist academic staff in attending professional development meetings and programs. For more information on how to secure up to $500 in funding, please refer to the Request Form and Allocations Committee information found at http://www.uwgb.edu/hr/forms/index.asp?search=ASAC. Please note that personal funds can be used to match the amount awarded from the Allocations Committee funds, but departmental or institutional matches are strongly encouraged. The next scheduled meeting will be Jan. 30, so the deadline for applications and supporting letters from supervisors is Jan. 26. Questions? Contact any member of the Allocations Committee: Marlys Brunsting (Chair), Lynn Niemi, Anne Seidl, Kristy Aoki and Zach Voelz.

More funds available for staff development... if you know where to look
Because the demand for funding usually outstrips the amount available through its account, the committee would like academic staff to be aware of other funding opportunities. The Institute for Research pays a subscription fee to access the largest database of funding sources in the world. Many grants, scholarships and fellowships are listed here. Although most have specific application requirements and are competitive, awards are often considerable. UW-Green Bay staff can search this database by doing the following:

Link to http://www.uwgb.edu/research/COSFUND.HTM

Click on "COS" at the top

Click on "Search COS Funding Opportunities" and enter a few keywords

You may refine your query for location, type of funding, etc.

This tip from Lidia Nonn: "The best place for a staff member to begin is probably with the organizations they are members of professionally. For example, if I wanted to attend a meeting for grant administrators, I would search stipends or funding from the National Council of University Research Administrators."
