We search the Web for news so you don't have to. Still haven't found much, if any, reporting on the state Assembly's proposed de-funding of the prestigious UW Law School, the possible withdrawal of taxpayer support from public radio and TV, and various other seemingly dramatic proposals. No explanation or rationale and not much discussion heard, pro or con. In any other week, proposals along these lines would be surefire blog fuel and front-page fodder. Guess this isn't any other week. In news today:
• University officials question budget priorities
• Statements posted by UW System
• Prof. Ritch is new associate dean
• Snapshots: climbing the tower
• First open house for new BAS degree
• Experts, we want to hear from you
• What makes you an expert?
• Laatsch to lead Belgian Heritage Tour
• Oh the Humanities!
• Feds to follow student loans
• Former UWM student government leader faces charges
Shepard: Latest budget proposal would shrink 'Growth,' hurt education
The 2007-09 state budget proposal the Wisconsin Assembly passed Tuesday would have serious consequences for UW-Green Bay and a plan to grow its enrollment, Chancellor Bruce Shepard says. A news release summarizing Shepard's message to the campus and to community supporters is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007july.htm#assemblybudget.
Statements posted by UW System
Green Bay's Bruce Shepard is one of two UW chancellors to have their budget reactions posted at the UW System news site. The other is Madison Chancellor John Wiley. Links can be found at the end of the joint message from Regent President Mark Bradley and System President Kevin Reilly — with strong words all around — at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2007/r070710.htm.

Prof. Donna Ritch is appointed associate dean
Donna Ritch, a UW-Green Bay faculty member since 1989 and chair of the University's Human Biology academic unit, has been named associate dean of liberal arts and sciences. Ritch has guided the Human Biology unit through extensive growth while also serving UW-Green Bay in numerous other capacities. For more on Ritch and the appointment, announced today by Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences Scott Furlong, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007july.htm#ritch.
Snapshots: Test climbs
It's not yet open to the public, but the new, 28-foot-high, 360-degree climbing tower at the Kress Event Center's fitness area is now in place. Making test climbs recently were visiting installers from the Eldorado Wall Company of Boulder, Colo., along with a UW-Green Bay climber, Prof. David Voelker, Humanistic Studies, who is helping with the project. For snapshots, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.
Welcome! It's first open house for new BAS degree program
It's the first public open house, set for Tuesday (July 17), for prospective students hoping to learn more about new UW programs aimed at making a bachelor's degree more accessible to technical college graduates. The innovative Bachelor of Applied Studies degree programs to be offered by UW-Green Bay and UW-Oshkosh. The location is Room 112A of the Bordini Center at Fox Valley Tech in Appleton, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. For more, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007july.htm#basinfo.
Experts, we want to hear from you
The Office of Marketing and University Communication is updating UW-Green Bay's online Experts Guide. The list of campus sources who can provide expert commentary for the news media and also serve as community resources is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/experts/experts.htm.
What makes you an expert?
You are an expert by virtue of your experiences, your hobbies, your volunteerism, the language you speak and your knowledge. Maybe you have lived outside of the United States and could help lead a travel experience. Maybe you have extensive experience working with a particular population, issue or area. Virtually every faculty and staff member of this Institution is an "expert" in something. We want to hear from you. Faculty and staff interested in being added to the list should send contact information and topics of expertise to Scott Hildebrand, director of news and media relations, at hildebrs@uwgb.edu or Sue Bodilly, director of marketing, at bodillys@uwgb.edu.
Laatsch to star at Heritage Tour, Belgian Days
The Brussels Lions Club will present the 46th annual Belgian Days July 14-15 at the Brussels Town Park on State 57 in Brussels. The event will include the Belgian Heritage Tour starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14. Tour Director Bill Laatsch of the UW-Green Bay faculty, a specialist on Door County's Belgian settlement, will give visitors plenty of entertaining information on a tour of Brussels, Namur, Rosiere, Lincoln and Champion, and compare the settlements to their sister cities in Belgium.
Oh the Humanities!
Here's another interesting column on UW-Madison's absolutely Brutalistic architecture, at least as represented by the much-maligned Humanities Building at the corner of Park and University. Again, any resemblance to any 1960s-vintage design at UW-Green Bay is purely in the eye of the beholder. See http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/column/smith//index.php?ntid=200549&ntpid=1.
Feds say they're on the case with student loans
Officials from the U.S. Department of Education say they will be increasingly aggressive in oversight of student loan programs at colleges and universities. Check http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/07/10/nasfaa.
Former UWM student government leader faces charges
That one-time UW-Milwaukee student government leader accused of raiding the seg-fee cookie jar for questionable and/or personal spending? Charges have been filed. See http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/W/WI_UWM_STUDENT_GOVT_WIOL-?SITE=WIMIL&SECTION=STATE&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT.
