Additional information is possible later today (Friday, July 27) as to the identity and cause of death of a body found Thursday in a submerged car in the Fox River. Police investigators believe the body is that of 21-year-old UW-Green Bay student Mahalia Xiong, missing since July 13, but they have not yet confirmed identification. It is expected that UW-Green Bay officials will share a statement with the campus community later today.

Promoters tout affordability
Katie Green '99, executive director of Weidner Center Presents Inc., notes the average price of a three-show subscription package is less than $90, and three of the events in the season offer discounted children's pricing. Subscription orders are being accepted now, and remaining tickets for individual shows will go on sale at the end of August. All orders will be processed by University Ticketing Services, located in the lower level of the University Union. Recent Weidner Center ticket buyers can expect to receive a full season brochure in the mail next week.

Regent President Bradley tells citizens to 'step up' for education, UW System
UW System Board of Regents President Mark Bradley isn't saying the state will cut UW enrollment by 22,500 students if a worst-case budget proposal becomes law. He uses that number, however, to illustrate the magnitude of the potential impact. Any volunteers? Board President uses UW-Green Bay example
In his newspaper guest column (previous item), Regent President Mark Bradley hits close to home with his budget-cutting scenario:

"I asked a sophomore accounting major at UW-Green Bay if she would sit out a couple of years while we absorbed the Assembly's budget cuts. No, she said, because that would frustrate her plans to return home and work in the family business. Like about 63 percent of incoming UWGB students, she will be the first in her family to earn a college degree, and her parents would be heartbroken."

Rep. Nass shares rationale for targeted cuts
An Associated Press story this week invited State Rep. Steve Nass, chairman of the Assembly's higher ed committee and a longtime critic of the UW System, to share his reasoning for supporting a number of cuts to the university budget. See http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=202688&ntpid=3

UW System: Administrative, communication cuts wouldn't be good business
Of interest to a few of us here on the Cofrin Library's 8th floor: A provision of the Assembly budget that would furlough communications staff and at least one vice chancellor on each campus. UW System officials say such cuts would be ill-advised. See http://www.madison.com/tct/news/index.php?ntid=202740

Marc Jimos students to play with country star Urban
Keith Urban must be a huge country star, or he wouldn't be playing two shows next week at the Resch Center. Of interest on campus: playing backup on at least one number will be Ashwaubenon High School students of teacher Marc Jimos, a 1999 COA and music grad and, more recently, a master's graduate in Applied Leadership for Teaching and Learning. Jimos was often a featured performer during his days at UW-Green Bay. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070724/GPG05/70724061/1978
