Stuck indoors
at UW-Green Bay on this most beautiful day? Well, at least you're
getting paid. In Green Bay public schools, students this week
are reaping the downside of the most lopsided trade since the
Esau stew deal, or the John Hadl heist, and spending time in class
as a makeup for a couple of cold-and-snow closings that really
weren't that cold or snowy (by old-timer standards, anyway.) Still
in school on June 11. Consider it an economics lesson, kids, on
the concept of "opportunity cost." In news today:
• Regents approve full-professor status
for Kersten, Meyer, Nielsen
• Tenure for Chen, Gates, Hanke, Jeon, Meacham,
Myer

Regents
approve full-professor status for Kersten, Meyer, Nielsen
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved promotions
for nine UW-Green Bay faculty members at the board's meeting Friday
(June 8) at UW-Milwaukee. Promoted to full professor from associate
professor were Andrew Kersten, Social Change and Development; E.
Nicole Meyer, Humanistic Studies and Women's Studies; and Kim Nielsen,
Social Change and Development.
Tenure for Chen, Gates, Hanke, Jeon,
Meacham, Myer
The Regents also voted Friday to ratify the promotion of faculty
members from the probationary status of assistant professor to the
rank of associate professor with tenure. The six UW-Green Bay professors
so recognized were Franklin Chen, Natural and Applied Sciences;
Alison Gates, Communication and the Arts; Craig Hanke, Human Biology;
Woo Jeon, Natural and Applied Sciences; Rebecca Meacham, Humanistic
Studies; and Steven Meyer, Natural and Applied Sciences.
Prof. Kraft will be guest on Ben Merens'
radio broadcast from Heritage Hill
UW-Green Bay Prof. Michael Kraft, Public and Environmental Affairs,
will be a featured guest when Wisconsin Public Radio's Ben Merens
brings his statewide "At Issue" program to Green Bay from 4 to 6
p.m. Thursday (June 14). Merens will broadcast live from Heritage
Hill State Park. Kraft will discuss major national news stories
of the day and take audience questions during the 4 p.m. hour. Tickets
for the program are $5 per person and are available by calling 465-2502.
'Amnesia Sale' (?!!?) at Phoenix Bookstore
The Phoenix Bookstore is holding a pre-inventory blowout sale next
Monday and Tuesday (June 18 and 18), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Our
bookstore source suggests that the sale will be so extraordinary
that the manager must have bumped his head again — and returned
back in time to the prices of his youth — but that would be a tacky
way to advertise a sale. But you get the picture: big bargains,
next Monday and Tuesday.
President Walsh, President Reilly talk
about Growth plans
President of the UW System Kevin Reilly and Regent President David
Walsh issued a statement last week following Joint Finance Committee
action on the UW System budget, including the Growth Agenda. Click
http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2007/r070607a.htm.
More coverage of last week's Joint
Finance action on Growth Agenda
The Legislature's Joint Committee on Finance approved $149 million
in state funding for the UW System. If approved by the full Legislature
and Gov. Doyle, these funds will allow System campuses to move forward
with a number of crucial initiatives. We linked last week to Press-Gazette
coverage; Milwaukee and Madison newspaper coverage is archived online
at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=615675
and http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=155697&ntpid=5.
Take a look at the new Athletics
'insignia'
The UW-Green Bay Athletics program unveiled their new look last
Thursday (June 7). Image, wordmark and insignia are on the Web at
http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/genrel/060707aad.html.
Green Bay Athletics contracts with
national licensing agency
Green Bay Athletics announced last week it will use the services
of The Licensing Resource Group, Inc. in the trademarking of the
new insignia, wordmark and image. Based in Winston-Salem, N.C.,
with offices in Michigan, Iowa and Ohio, LRG represents over 120
clients nationwide in the complete management of their trademark
licensing program. Such a licensing agreement is common among college-sports
programs nationwide. The agreement also covers commercial use of
the primary University of Wisconsin-Green Bay logos.
For most on campus, new licensing
deal will have no impact
"Will campus offices have to pay licensing rights to use any University
mark, at any time?" In nearly all cases, the answer is "no." Here's
a draft statement for the soon-to-be-unveiled UW-Green Bay style
and graphics manual that explains the distinction.
Commercial
vs. non-commercial use of University marks
It is the policy of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay that
all University offices, organizations, departments and affiliated
organizations (ex. Alumni Association) may use the primary institutional
trade names, trademarks, service marks and logos for promotional
and identification purposes. Questions about such non-commercial
uses, and the proper display of University marks, should be
directed to the Office of Marketing and University Communication.
Use of
UW-Green Bay marks for commercial purposes — such as the sale
of items bearing the University trade name, trademarks, service
marks or logos — is subject to fees and royalties. The University
retains the services of a national firm to administer its licensing
program and monitor commercial usage. Whether external vendor
or University entity, any group interested in selling items
that bear any institutional marks should first contact the campus
licensing program coordinator in the Office Of Intercollegiate
Athletics.
Ricketts attack decimates U.S. national
team
UW-Green Bay men's soccer standout Tosaint Ricketts had an action-packed
summer evening last week as the junior-to-be scored three goals
against the United States on the way to a 4-0 win for Canada in
the Hyundai men's U-20 tour presented by Yahoo! Canada. Click http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/060707aaa.html.
Mark Bradley of Wausau is new Regents
president
The UW System Board of Regents has a new president. Mark Bradley
has been on the Board since 2003, and works in Wausau as an attorney.
He previously worked for the University of Wisconsin System as a
budget analyst and an assistant to the UW System senior vice president.
See http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2007/r070608a.htm.
Regents target student loan practices
The UW System Board of Regents moved last week to address the potential
for conflicts of interest between UW System financial aid employees
and private educational lenders. The Regents plan is similar to
measures being considered at the federal level. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=616746.
All state Blue Books now online
Wisconsin's Blue Book, a biennial publication of the state's government
dating back to 1853, is now online as a free, searchable database.
Read about it at http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/top/index.php?ntid=158578&ntpid=1.
Grammy-winning jazz and bluegrass
artists are coming to campus
Tickets are on sale now for Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, coming
to the Weidner Center on Wednesday evening, June 27. The group bridges
the worlds of jazz and bluegrass while stirring in classical, pop,
and R&B/soul elements, and Bela Fleck is regarded among the world's
top banjo player and one of the most innovative recording artists
in music. Read more at http://www.uwgb.edu/weidner/Calendar.htm.
Gerds shares account of Weidner
remembrance service
Local Gannett columnist Warren Gerds attended Saturday night's Edward
W. Weidner memorial/celebration. His Sunday morning column conveyed
a nice sense of the spirit of the evening, at http://www.postcrescent.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007706100568.
'Farewell photo' a good one
Ed Weidner must have had his photograph taken 10,000 times over
the years at UW-Green Bay. A good one to remember him by was taken
recently during what might have been his final, formal campus visit.
He attended the scholarship reception for donors and student recipients,
and posed in the Weidner Center, surrounded by smart, attractive
young people. Not bad. See the fifth image down (and the first —
see front table) at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/07scholarship.htm.
