Vol.
38, No. 114, June 4, 2007 / Log
Archive
This is the LOG newsletter for Monday, June 4. Today's funny comes courtesy of the inestimable James Carville, whose entertaining panel discussion with fellow political talkers Bill O'Reilly and Leon Panetta is re-playing this week on C-Span. Asked if Al Gore will run in 2008, Carville said "yes" and then trotted out this line: "Running for president is kind of like making love. It's not the sort of thing you do once and say, 'That's it for me.' The recidivism rate is very, very high." In real news today:
• Lund earns Rotary scholarship for study in Turkey
• Students hone English at ESL Institute
• Free reception for 'Do Not Go Gently' documentary
• Legislator proposes trimming affirmative action
• The 'Milwaukee 7'
• Phoenix finish fourth in all-sport standings
• Horizon League, America Channel to partner on some things
UW-Green Bay grad wins Rotary scholarship for study in Turkey
A May 2007 graduate has been selected for a prestigious Rotary scholarship enabling her to study in Turkey for a year. Jemma Lund, of Osceola, will pursue graduate studies in international relations with an emphasis in Middle Eastern studies at Bilkent University in the Turkish capital of Ankara. Lund earned her degree in elementary education with an international studies certificate and minors in French, music and geography. She is believed to be only the third American student in a decade to receive a scholarship from the Turkish Rotary Clubs. For more, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007may.htm#rotary.
Students can improve English skills at UW-Green Bay ESL Institute
UW-Green Bay offers a Summer English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute from July 9 through Aug. 10 for students age 18 and older who want to improve their English skills. Bilingual students who recently have emigrated to the U.S. and bilingual international students will be equally served by the institute experience, according to Brent Blahnik, director of international education. Prof. Russell Arent is the Summer ESL coordinator. For details, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007june.htm#english.
Free reception for NEWIST's 'Do Not Go Gently' documentary
A free public screening of the documentary "Do Not Go Gently" — about the power of imagination in aging — will be June 14 at the Meyer Theatre. Among the creative people profiled is the Green Bay area's own Leo Ornstein, interviewed at age 109 on his approach to living and avant-garde composing. Narrated by Walter Cronkite, the program also shares new research on aging and brain function. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a cash bar and desserts, followed by the screening at 6:45 p.m. and talk-back at 8 p.m. The reception is underwritten by the Helen Bader Foundation, the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, and the Wisconsin Arts Board. Event sponsors are NEWIST/CESA 7 and Alzheimer's Association of Greater Wisconsin. All are invited, but please RSVP to 465-2599.
Legislator proposes trimming affirmative action
It's a long shot for passage anytime soon, but a proposal to significantly scale back affirmative action in the University of Wisconsin System and in state contracting is stirring discussion. Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) is pushing for the changes. See

Move over, 'New North,' here comes the 'Milwaukee 7'
There's another multi-county, economic-development alliance with a snappy name: The Milwaukee 7. Counties in SE Wisconsin are talking about cooperating on bringing in high-tech industries to replace old-line manufacturers moving overseas. Counties involved are Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha. The Journal Sentinel had a story at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=612592.
