This is an abbreviated edition of the LOG News for faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Like everybody else, we're watching the skies and monitoring radar. Two days of dire warnings about double-digit G-Force winds and basketball-size hail will do that to a person. Looks like we'll be OK for a little while yet, anyway. In news today:
• Good news for Growth Agenda at Tuesday's Joint Finance meeting
• Athletics unveils new insignia today
• Speths rate a father-daughter Bellin preview
• In his own words: Founding Chancellor Weidner
• Check out the Heller cartoon, and more media coverage
• Photo slideshow: Edward W. Weidner
Good news for Growth Agenda at Tuesday's Joint Finance meeting
We'll have time and space to share more coverage next week, after this Saturday's major event at the Weidner Center, but Joint Finance Committee action Tuesday in Madison yielded a positive result for the Northeastern Wisconsin Growth Agenda for UW-Green Bay. The Press-Gazette carried a story yesterday at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070606/GPG0101/706060678/1207.
Athletics to unveil new insignia today
There was a 4 p.m. news conference scheduled for today (Thursday, June 7) at the Kress Center's fitness area, at which Green Bay Athletics would unveil its new athletics insignia, wordmark and logo to the local news media. The introduction of the new images will also coincide with the department's visual identity program, a plan to enhance Green Bay Athletics' visibility.
Green Bay staffer rates a father-daughter Bellin preview
Today's newspaper carried a nice little story about the Speth family rivalry between father Andy, of the LearnTech Center, and daughter Susan, 29, who will both be running in Saturday's mega-popular Bellin Run. They both run in the impressive low-40s range. Click http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070607/GPG02/706070505.
In his own words: Founding Chancellor Weidner
We've captured some excerpts from some of the late Ed Weidner's speeches, interviews and remarks, many from his earliest years at UW-Green Bay. Fascinating reading, especially if you're up on your UWGB history. It's now archived at his site, at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/weidner/hiswords.htm.
Check out the Heller cartoon, and more media coverage
A picture worth a thousand words? Probably, if it's the editorial cartoon in today's Green Bay Press-Gazette, a simple but immensely eloquent tribute to Founding Chancellor Edward Weidner, who died yesterday at age 85. Look for the cartoon/icon at the bottom of the page, and also check out the "media coverage" link at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/weidner/index.htm.
Photo slideshow: Edward W. Weidner
There's a terrific slideshow — vintage images, new ones and in-between — highlighting the life and times of the late Ed Weidner, now online at http://www.uwgb.edu/weidnertributes/slideshow/.
