UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 38, No. 120, June 8, 2007     /     Log Archive

The LOG, too, mourns the passing of Founding Chancellor Edward Weidner because, like a lot of things around here, the LOG was his idea. He might have even named it. (There's a vintage 1969 memo around here somewhere with that history.) In his honor, here's a final, Friday-afternoon, all-Weidner-all-the-time edition of the newsletter he created for faculty and staff of the University he helped build:

Parting thought: Family ties... crazy ones

Speakers at Saturday evening's memorial service
A series of speakers will offer very brief remarks at the Celebration of Edward Weidner's Life this Saturday (June 9, 2007) at the Weidner Center. Among them: Chancellor Bruce Shepard, daughter Nancy Weidner Larson, emcee Bill Laatsch, Donald Harden, William Kuepper, Herbert Grover, student Betsy Daharsh, alumnus Patrick Madden, James Madigan, John Gilman, Carol Hammerle, Robert Howe and Tom Erdman. Musical selections are aptly chosen passages from "Les Miserables" and "Phantom of the Opera" as well as the classic spiritual "Amazing Grace," performed by faculty members Benjamin Brecher and Sarah Meredith.

Reminder: Details of Saturday's events
The community celebration of the life of Edward W. Weidner will he held Saturday (June 9) at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Members of the Weidner family will welcome guests in the Grand Foyer of the Weidner Center from 3 to 6 p.m. A program at 6 p.m. in Cofrin Family Hall will include tributes to Weidner from family, friends, and representatives of the campus and community.

Musical tribute to Weidner from 5 to 6 p.m. in Cofrin Family Hall
A special musical tribute to Weidner will be from 5 to 6 p.m. inside the center's Cofrin Family Hall, in advance of the formal program. Performers will be Jeff Verkuilen, organ, Wayne Lin, violin, and Sarah and Jenny Larsen, violin and piano.

New on 'Passing' site: magazine profiles, more
Two especially good remembrances of the Weidner years are now online. In PDF form is a looking-back-at-his-20-years-as-chancellor piece, authored by longtime News Service director Betty Brown for the UW System magazine. A 1994 remembrance of UW-Green Bay's founding was the topic of a comprehensive story (written by Weidner himself) for the Voyageur history magazine. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/weidner/magazine.htm.

Heller art is front-page tribute
If it's not your homepage or you seldom visit, you might check out the main UWGB Web page, which through the weekend will feature cartoonist Joe Heller's special tribute to the late Ed Weidner. See http://www.uwgb.edu.

Terrific images, TV-11 story
Once again, if you haven't yet visited... There's a great collection of early UWGB images online at http://www.uwgb.edu/weidnertributes/slideshow/. Also archived is video of the exceptional story TV-11 did on the day of Weidner's passing, at http://www.myfoxnewisconsin.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=3419756&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=3.2.1.

Contribute your remembrances
UW-Green Bay alumni and employees, past and present, are invited to share their recollections of early UWGB and its Founding Chancellor on the university's Web site. The comments are being uploaded for Web display, and will eventually be compiled for the Weidner family. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/weidner/index.htm.

Family ties
Here's a thought: It wouldn't be a true Weidner gathering without some flamboyant, technicolor and downright goofy ties on display or in the audience at Saturday's event. One of the final and finest feature stories we ever did on Ed Weidner concerned his predilection for outrageous neckwear. Check out the great photo and fun story at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/insidearchive/05may3.htm#ties.

To Top of Page.
