This morning, faculty and staff received an e-mail from the Chancellor announcing he has accepted an invitation to be a finalist for the presidency at Western Michigan University. Minutes later, the HR Office by coincidence shared a helpful campuswide e-mail on "Things to Do When You Terminate Employment." Then comes news (below) about the UW Plan 2008 author retiring in June 2007. Seems there's a theme firing up here, but we at the LOG News dismissed any thoughts of moving on or leaving early today, resigning ourselves to take on yet another new job (editing this issue) before we could call it quits and retire for the evening.

Food for thought: Center goes online
The Center for Food in Community and Culture, an interdisciplinary venture to "enhance the synergy between sustainable food systems and a sound environment," has a new Web site. See who is involved in the project and how the Center is connecting regionally. It's one of the highlights at the Celebrating Scholarship Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/scholarship. Want to share a line or two about your own scholarly pursuits? Self-submit at the site or send your idea to ternest@uwgb.edu.
Shorewood Golf season is here!
The course is open today (March 29). The restaurant will open on Monday (April 2). It's a great on-campus dining option just a short walk from any part of campus. Shorewood accepts cash, check, VISA and MasterCard. Following a software conversion, PassPoints will again be accepted starting April 9. You can view the menu at http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/restaurantInfo/menu.asp.
New this year: tee-times become 'e-times'
Hey, this Internet thing could catch on! With features like this, that is. The Shorewood Golf Course now offers you the ability to book your tee-times online at http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood. "We would also be happy to book your tee-times in the clubhouse by calling 465-2118," they add.
Visiting French vocalist promises 'merveilleux' concert Monday evening
Here's a marvelous, major event sponsored by the French club (Cercle Francais), the French program and Humanistic Studies, among others: Acclaimed vocalist Claudia Hommel will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday (April 2) in the University Theatre. Prof. Nicole Meyer reports that Hommel was the keynote at the 2006 American Association of Teachers of French 2006 conference, at $25/ticket, but through the campus club's efforts, Monday's concert will have no admission charge. The Paris-born Hommel, now living in Chicago as an Illinois ArtsTour artist-in-residence and instructor at DePaul University, performs a repertoire drawn from 20th century popular French chansons, 19th century melodies and a sprinkling of American song and musical theatre. She will be accompanied by singer and pianist Bob Moreen.
Reception celebrates donation of 'Snow Queen' to UW-Green Bay art collection
The campus community is invited to a reception to celebrate artist Lori J. Reich's donation of one of her works of art to the UW-Green Bay art collection. The work, The Snow Queen and Her Seven Deadly Sirs, is an 8-foot-long work on canvas. The painting can be viewed at http://www.lorijreich.com/snowqueen.htm. The reception is at 4:30 p.m. Monday (April 2) in Room 411 of Studio Arts. The work will be on display at the reception, and Reich will give a brief presentation about her work. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Reich is a self-taught artist and a longtime resident of Green Bay.
Soprano/harpist to perform Wednesday at Weidner Center
Soprano and Irish harpist Patricia O'Neill will perform in Fort Howard Hall of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 4). O'Neill's recital is free and open to the public. O'Neill will perform a concert of Irish folk music, accompanying herself on the harp. A professor of voice at Louisiana State University, she has performed extensively as a recitalist. In addition to performances throughout the United States, her travels have taken her to Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Korea and China for recitals and master classes. Her performance at UW-Green Bay is sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association Student Organization, the UW-Green Bay Music program, and the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
WMU posts announcement on Shepard candidacy for president
For the benefit of off-campus LOG subscribers who might not have heard this morning's news: Chancellor Bruce Shepard is among four finalists for the presidency of Western Michigan University, a public research institution of 25,000 students located in Kalamazoo. His e-mail to the campus community is archived at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/index.htm. WMU has a news release on the four distinguished finalists on their front page at http://www.wmich.edu/.

Press-Gazette maintains salary data on Web
Earlier this week we linked to a guest column by Chancellor Bruce Shepard regarding the dust-up over the UW System pulling back its salary data from the online "Redbook." (The UW's stated rationale was to discourage "poaching" by rival schools, but Shepard and others have pointed out that easier access had a benefit in publicizing the Systemwide need for more competitive pay.) In any event, we received an inquiry or two about whether the data can still easily be found online. It is, at

Editorial: 'Audit reveals two salary issues'
An editorial encourages state political and higher education officials to use the results of a Wisconsin Technical College System salary audit wisely, emphasizing that Wisconsin must maintain the quality of its higher education institutions. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070328/GPG06/703280627/1269/GPGopinion.
From guitar to sitar, Balsley travels and plays

See his India note at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070328/GPG05/70328086&located=FLASH.

Twenty top student employees are nominated for UW-Green Bay award
We are told that twenty students have been nominated (from a potential pool of more than 800) for the UW-Green Bay Student Employee of the Year. A panel of student, faculty and staff judges select the winner, to be announced during Student Employee Recognition Week April 9-13. Watch for more next week, as things draw closer, with details on lunch specials, prizes, "cookie day," an ice cream treat and more... or check the article at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive38/2007mar20.htm#employees.

Phil Montgomery to head the committee. Wisconsin State Journal coverage is at http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/index.php?ntid=126692&ntpid=1.
Reminder: Strategic Budgeting Committee
Each year at this time, the Strategic Budgeting Committee hosts a campus forum on the strategic budget plan for the coming year. A summary of the recommendations made by the Chancellor's Cabinet can be found at the SBC Web site http://www.uwgb.edu/pboffice/SBC/SBCMain.htm.
