Heirloom vegetable sale highlights weekend at UW-Green Bay
The annual heirloom vegetable plant sale, a fundraiser for the Natural and Applied Sciences unit, is expected to draw long lines Saturday (May 19) at the Laboratory Sciences greenhouse. More than 4,000 tomato plants are ready for sale, including cherries, paste/salsa, novelty, yellows and reds. About 1,000 bells and medium-to-hot peppers also will be available. UW-Green Bay faculty and staff are reminded of the employee-only advance sale between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Friday. More details, including what's for sale, are online at http://www.uwgb.edu/biodiversity/plantsale/index.htm.
Plant sale supports research, training for seven UW-Green Bay students
Seven UW-Green Bay students will receive awards to support their scientific research and training from proceeds from the heirloom vegetable sale. Travel funds to attend scientific meetings were awarded to graduate students Amanda Lederer, Nick Reckinger, Marci Johnson and Lawrence Eslinger. Funds for travel and expenses associated with research projects were provided to Jay Watson for a study of native bee pollination in Northeastern Wisconsin apple orchards, Simone Kolb for a study of microbes in managed Wisconsin soils, and Juniper Sundance for research on wild rice populations in Wisconsin. All of the students are part of the Environmental Science and Policy graduate program. Numerous students have donated time to prepare for the sale, under the leadership of Vicki Medland of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity and Prof. Michael Draney.
UW-Green Bay honors Hendricksons for service, support
Longtime UW-Green Bay friends and supporters Philip and Elizabeth (Betsy) Hendrickson were honored Monday (May 14) with the naming of the Philip J. and Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Community Center in the University's Residence Life complex. The center is a gathering spot and service facility for the nearly 2,000 students living on campus. Snapshots of the naming and dedication ceremony are online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/07hendrickson.htm.
Del Bianco welcomed with concert at Weidner Center
UW-Green Bay students, faculty and alumni welcomed Paolo Del Bianco of Florence, Italy to the campus Friday (May 11) with a concert of operatic singing at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Del Bianco received an honorary doctorate from the University at commencement ceremonies the next day. A highlight of Friday's event was the presentation of a key to the city to Del Bianco by Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt. Fire destroys former student's home; Upward Bound staff looking for help
The Upward Bound staff is collecting items for a former student whose home was destroyed by fire last weekend. The former student is a 2005 graduate of Upward Bound and Green Bay West High School. She and her 18-month-old daughter are in need of housing, household items, furniture, personal items and clothing. Monetary donations also are being accepted for the purchase of grocery store and gas gift cards. To help, contact Kristi Sanders at extension 2989 or stop by Room 1905 of Student Services.
Text of Gollnick's commencement address is available online

The text of his commencement address is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/thenews.htm.

Maintenance outage Monday at heat/chill plant
Here's a reminder that there will be a scheduled electrical blackout for routine maintenance at the heat/chill plant from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday (May 21). Electrical service to campus buildings will NOT be interrupted, but steam, chilled water and compressed air will be lost. Consequently there will be no building heat, hot water or air conditioning. Ventilation fans will run with minimum outside makeup air provided.
Classified Staff Advisory Council launches lunch fundraisers
It's too late for today, but the Classified Staff Advisory Council and Shorewood Golf Course have renewed the series of lunch fundraisers that debuted last summer. They will run all summer on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Shorewood will serve its regular menu along with a special on each date with 10 percent of all proceeds going to the fundraiser. The fundraiser will be used to supplement current funds for ongoing education, training and other activities for Classified Staff employees. Next Thursday's special is a chicken bacon wrap with chips and pickle for $3.50. All menu items will count toward the fundraiser so you do not have to order the weekly special to participate. To view menu items and to order online, click http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/restaurantInfo/menu.asp.
