Vol.
39, No. 49, December 21, 2007 / Log
Archive
For those of you still religiously checking your emails on this early Friday afternoon before some well-deserved time off... and also for those of you doing that checking in secular fashion... (in Green Bay, we never take sides)... here's one last broadcast for 2007:
• Commencement videos
• Kraft gets nationwide ink with ozone column
• Channel 32 will broadcast (FREE!) Phoenix hoops
• Saturday action
• A cheery holiday pitch
Commencement videos: Lajdziak, Krambs, Bellmore
Podcasts of our December 2007 commencement speakers are now up and available for viewing, online. Three separate videos capture the remarks of commencement speaker Jill Lajdziak, general manager of the Saturn Corporation and a 1979 UW-Green Bay graduate; student speaker Emily Krambs; and student award winner Lynn Bellmore. Visit http://www.uwgb.edu/commencement/podcasts/.
Kraft column on ozone standards draws attention nationwide
UW-Green Bay faculty member Michael Kraft's expertise and views on proposed national ozone standards have been shared with audiences from coast to coast. At least 20 newspapers, including some of the nation's leading dailies, published Kraft's column in which he argued for tough ozone standards to improve public health. Kraft is a professor of Public and Environmental Affairs. In addition to Wisconsin newspapers such as the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal, newspapers carrying the column included the Kansas City Star, Charlotte Observer, Columbus Dispatch and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. For those of you who missed a Log item on the column several weeks ago, the column remains available on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Web site at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=689328.
Green Bay Athletics, Channel 32 partner to offer own 10 big broadcasts
No dish needed here! Ten big Phoenix basketball games will be broadcast free and over the public airwaves this season thanks to a partnership announced today involving the Green Bay Athletics department and WACY-TV (MYNEW32). The partnership is actually with sister station WGBA-TV; NBC-26 personalities will handle play-by-play and color.
The schedule:
Men —
Saturday, Jan. 5 vs. Wright State (7 p.m.)
Jan. 19 vs. Milwaukee
Jan. 24 vs. Cleveland State
Feb. 7 vs. Valparaiso
Feb. 28 vs. UIC
March 1 vs. Loyola
Women —
Thursday, Jan. 10 vs. Cleveland State
Jan. 23 vs. Loyola
Jan. 26 vs. UIC
Feb. 14 vs. Valparaiso
More basketball this weekend... and a singing star
It's a basketball doubleheader, crosstown and in different buildings, with the Phoenix men playing NIU Saturday afternoon (Dec. 22) at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon and the women hosting North Dakota State at the Kress that night. See details at http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/.
*******
Incidentally, we wonder if vocal jazz instructor Chris Salerno is joining opposing basketball coaches in scouting 6-3 junior Lavesa Glover of the Phoenix women's team. Last night's Kress Events Center crowd of 2,000-plus responded in a very big way to the Miami native's soulful rendition of the national anthem. (Certainly, the fact she performed within seconds of being introduced as a starter and jumping the center tipoff had something to do with that but, clearly, power post moves aren't her only talent.)
And, finally... a cute holiday card for alumni friends
There's a cartoon sketch of the UW-Green Bay campus, a fun animated snowman and a familiar holiday tune. Also, as is customary in the development business, there's an end-of-year reminder to special friends that their support is valuable. Many or most of the 125 or so UW-Green Bay grads employed on campus have already seen the e-card with its fluffy-soft pitch, sent by Alumni/Advancement to alumni/supporters.
