Shepard to address budget, good news in 'FYI'
October has been a very good month, says Bruce Shepard. His monthly newsletter to community and campus, Chancellor's FYI, lands in mailboxes this weekend with good news highlighted by state budget support for the Growth Agenda. FYI will be released to the Web after 3 p.m. Friday (Oct. 26) at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/fyi/07novfyi.htm.

System President Kevin Reilly and Regent President Bradley went on record with their big "thumbs up" for the System portion of the budget immediately after Tuesday's legislative vote, at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2007/r071023.htm.

Doyle to sign budget Friday, at UW-Madison
Gov. Jim Doyle has invited, along with others, UW System leadership including that of this campus to be present as he signs the long-awaited 2007-09 Wisconsin state budget. The ceremony takes place Friday morning (Oct. 26). No doubt carefully chosen, the site will be the historic Memorial Union at UW-Madison.

Bruce has to cancel
Called away on other business, Chancellor Bruce Shepard had to cancel his regularly scheduled, weekly listening session at Common Grounds Coffee House for Friday morning (Oct. 26). The next office hour is 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7. For the remaining fall schedule, http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/openoffice.htm.

More Friday news: UW students taken off financial-aid wait list
The state's Higher Educational Aids Board sent the following message to UW System campuses this week along with the weekly list identifying which students are eligible for state aid:

"The Wisconsin State Legislature has forwarded a budget to Gov. Doyle which includes an appropriation of $50 million for UW WHEG. Gov. Doyle recommended this amount in his original budget proposal so we are confident that this figure is reliable. Therefore, we have released W codes and eligible wait-listed students should now have calculated awards on this list. We are prepared to accept vouchers for these students beginning with the Friday voucher!"

As noted here earlier, the WHEG holdup affected about 5,000 students statewide and approximately 200 here at UW-Green Bay.

Teachers, alumni enjoy Madison reception
State teachers' convention weekend in Madison is annually a big deal for both the UW-Green Bay Music program and the University's Alumni Association. UW-Green Bay is hosting what promises to be another well-attended reception at 5:30 tonight (Thursday, Oct. 25) at the Overture Center. Teachers, and music teachers in particular, are a sizeable share of the institution's alumni base.

Diversity Task Force programs to tackle old folks/young folks divide
The Campus Life Diversity Task Force is hosting two programs on intergenerational relationships in November.

• On Tuesday, November 6, a panel of retirees will share their personal experiences receiving services from social workers and other helping professionals (e.g. nurses, doctors, counselors, etc.). "Meeting the Needs of Aging Populations: A Panel Discussion" is geared toward anyone who is planning to enter one of these professions. The "seniors" will discuss their service needs and expectations.

• On Thursday, November 8, students and retirees will have the opportunity to get honest answers to basic questions that drive us all nuts, such as, "Why do 'old people' drive so slow?" and "Why do the 'young kids' these days wear their pants so low?" "Bridging the Generation Gap: Learning Through Collaborative Discourse" will help young adults and elders come to an understanding about the other's behaviors and culture.

Both programs are from 8 to 9:15 a.m. in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. A special thanks to the Institute for Learning in Retirement and Social Work professor Jolanda Sallman. For more information, contact Student Life at 465-2200 ext. 40 or osl@uwgb.edu.

A video take on 'these students today'
Getting a ton of YouTube hits and, actually, generating some thoughtful discussion of contemporary learning styles is this four-minute video by a cultural anthropology class at Kansas State University. Thanks to the LOG reader who pointed out this one, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGCJ46vyR9o&.

In need of comedy on Friday?
In search of light-hearted, optimistic, family comedy? Can't help you. If you prefer the bitterly cynical variety, however, the legendary George Carlin visits UW-Green Bay and the Weidner Center this Friday night (Oct. 26). For last-minute ticket info, see http://www.uwgb.edu/weidner/Calendar.htm.

'Famous Dave' is coming to UW-Green Bay
Dave Anderson, founder of "Famous Dave's" restaurant chain, will talk about "Life Skills for Success" on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Union's Christie Theatre. The program is free and open to the public. A self-proclaimed "underachiever," Anderson went on to earn a Harvard master's and establish a multi-million dollar chain of restaurants. He also runs life-skills workshops including one at UW-Green Bay that is part of the Maximum U. series of student leadership-development programs. His visit is sponsored by the Office of Student Life and COGS, a student organization committed to Character, Ownership, and Growth through Service. Shakeup in state Senate's Democratic leadership
Budget fallout: Democrats in the state Senate elected Sen. Russ Decker to replace Sen. Judy Robson as Senate Majority Leader, saying Decker would provide the party with a "stronger advocate." See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=678693.

Warm and fuzzy update to kittens saga
Thanks to the cat people who responded to Tuesday's post at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive39/2007oct23.htm#kittens. We're told the free kitties are now spoken for, which is a warm and fuzzy ending for everyone involved.
