Shorewood still plans to open
In anticipation of more rain and snow on Saturday, Shorewood Golf Course and Clubhouse Restaurant has pushed back opening day to Monday (April 14). Says manager Dan Murphy: "The forecast looks nice for next week so we hope you can make the walk out to Shorewood to enjoy our restaurant or to play a round of golf. If you haven't visited Shorewood yet, visit our Web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood to view our menu and to find out more about UW-Green Bay's golf course."

The Collectomaniacs
Collectomaniacs, an occasional series of informal talks and presentations of artworks and collections, takes place in Studio Arts Room 411 this Thursday (April 17) at 4:45 p.m. Profs. Stephen Perkins (on artists' periodicals and prints) and Chris Style (on Indian miniatures) will talk about and show their collections.

Panel discussion Monday to highlight life in Asian countries
A panel of speakers will talk about life in Asian countries as part of the American Intercultural Center's Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration. The free event is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday (April 14) in the Union's 1965 Room. Free Asian appetizers will be provided. It is one of a number of Asian-themed events sponsored by the AIC. Speakers are Nicole Lemke, Kristin Aoki, Chuck Steinbach, Michele Ruhland and Stephanie Kirk. For bios, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-87.htm.

Photos: State's top tax man visits, praises student VITA helpers
Wisconsin Department of Revenue Secretary Roger Ervin held a news conference here Thursday for a pre-April 15 update on things like electronic filing and average tax refunds. Brook Borchert, co-coordinator of the UW-Green Bay VITA program, and state Rep. James Soletski, a former student himself, responded with pride when Ervin highlighted the program. Student Employee Appreciation Week activities
Student Employee Appreciation Week runs April 14 through 18. It's a chance for everyone on campus to stop and appreciate the outstanding contributions of student employees who contribute to the operation and success of our campus. The student employment office shares word that UW-Green Bay's celebration will include:

• an e-mailed trivia quiz for student employees with a chance at daily promotions;

• specials at the University Union's Corner Store that supervisors may purchase for student employees — big decorated cookie or a Sweet Pack;

• an opportunity for supervisors to receive 'buy one get one free' coupons to take their student employees to lunch on campus;

• free ice cream at 11 a.m. on Monday (April 14), for all student employees, with campus "celebrities" doing the scooping in the Garden Café Booth;

• cookie decorating (and eating) in the Garden Café Booth at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (April 15), for student employees;

• a fun evening with free popcorn, games and other discounts for student employees in the Phoenix Club on Tuesday (April 15) at 7 p.m.;

• a chance for student employees to claim promo items on Wednesday (April 16), from 11 a.m., playing the Dum Dums sucker game, also in the Garden Café Booth;

• Student Employee of the Year will be named in a ceremony Thursday (April 17);

• Supervisors will receive packets to distribute to their employees with fun ideas to celebrate Student Employee Appreciation Week in your department.

If you're reading this Saturday or earlier, there's still time to Pow-Wow
The annual UW-Green Bay Pow-Wow hosted by the campus and Intertribal Student Council takes place from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday (April 12) at the Kress Events Center. A ceremony celebrating education and the new First Nations major takes place at 3 p.m. The schedule is at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-81.htm.

State's delay on big-money computer project raises eyebrows
Look for more coverage Monday, but the AP is reporting that a $150 million computer project is being put on hold as a temporary cost savings. It's being characterized as the latest in a string of expensive state government information technology projects that have either been suspended, cost more or not performed as promised. UW-Stout students turn out to protest group calling fire victims 'filthy'
Almost 1,000 UW-Stout students turned out to protest a local appearance by individuals representing the controversial Kansas-based church who suggested the three students killed in a recent house fire had it coming. See http://www.leadertelegram.com/story-news.asp?id=BGACMDB4BHV.

Wisconsin advances on "Making Opportunity Affordable" grant
UW System President Kevin P. Reilly has announced that Wisconsin has advanced to the next phase of the "Making Opportunity Affordable" grant program, funded by the Lumina Foundation. Reilly called it "a natural fit with the UW System's Growth Agenda for Wisconsin." Details at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2008/r080411.htm.

Meanwhile, Loftus questions use of differential tuition
Undergraduates at UW-Platteville will pay $100 more in tuition next year to help fund services in student retention, mental health, career-planning and senior projects under a plan approved Friday by the Board of Regents. Discussion was split, however, with Regent Thomas Loftus wondering if campuses are headed down a slippery slope using tuition for a purpose "that is not general instruction." The Journal-Sentinel weblog had early coverage at http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=4/11/2008&id=38250.

If you have any questions, contact Andy Speth.
