Governor appoints Cyndie Shepard to Wisconsin Covenant committee
More recognition for Green Bay's Phuture Phoenix program and the vision of those who make it go! Cyndie Shepard, the program's director and co-founder, was appointed this week to the Wisconsin Covenant Foundation Advisory Committee. Gov. Jim Doyle has charged the group of community and business leaders to advance the statewide vision of the Wisconsin Covenant promising eighth graders who sign a pledge and meet specific criteria that they will earn a spot in a Wisconsin college or university. "I'm happy to have Cyndie on this committee with her background, expertise and foresight on helping our state's youth pursue higher education opportunities," said Doyle, who has previously credited Phuture Phoenix, Cyndie and Bruce Shepard for helping inspire the Covenant. For more from the Governor, Jessica Doyle and Cyndie Shepard, and for the full membership and parameters of the committee, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-105.htm.
It's official: Provost Hammersmith is president-designate
The Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported earlier today (April 17) that UW-Green Bay Provost Sue K. Hammersmith was confirmed Wednesday as the new president of Metropolitan State University. The paper's short account is at http://www.startribune.com/local/17845529.html. Metro State has a full news release PDF at http://webtools.metrostate.edu/announcements/display.cfm?id=9423&type=3.
Reminder: Congressional forum on low water is here Friday morning
How are lower water levels in Lakes Michigan and Superior affecting the economy and the environment? At the request of Rep. Steve Kagen, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment will hold a public hearing at 9 a.m. Friday (April 18) in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008804100677.
EVENT CANCELLED:
Evolution of Native American Identity topic is visiting speaker's topic
Prof. R. David Edmunds of the University of Texas at Dallas has interesting things to say about the evolution of Native American identity and why he believes some tribal communities may be forced to redefine just what it means to be Native American. He'll share his views in a free public lecture from 11 a.m. until noon Wednesday (April 23) in the Union's Christie Theatre. Edmunds has consulted for the BIA, the Department of Justice and The History Channel, among others. For more on this Historical Perspectives Lecture Series event, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-103.htm.
TV coverage: UW-Green Bay's ability to warn students
In case you missed it, WBAY-TV 2 ran a story this week reporting about measures in place at UW-Green Bay, on the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech tragedy, to provide immediate warnings to campus. You can view video or read about it at http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?S=8179279.
Sierra Club honors University, Student Government Association
UW-Green Bay and its Student Government Association were selected to receive a Power 2 Change award from the state Sierra Club this week for continued efforts toward reducing the campus's carbon footprint and creating a greener planet. The Climate Protection Award reflects campus efforts toward the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. For example, in 2006 students voted to support a $1.69 increase in student fees per semester to purchase "green energy" — mostly wind and biogas — through the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation's NatureWise program. Mary Ann Cofrin Hall's green features and Chancellor Shepard's signing of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment were also cited. Press-Gazette story on Opera Studio's 'L'Orfeo' this weekend
This Friday and Saturday (April 18 and 19), the UW-Green Bay Opera Studio presents Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo in the University Theatre at 7:30 p.m. both days. The work, to be sung in English, blends dance, theatre and music. Benjamin Brecher directs. Cyndie Shepard serves as choreographer; sets, costumes, and lighting are designed by the Theatre program. Warren Gerds of the Press-Gazette had an article at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080417/GPG0506/804170399.
More to come, but there's a free soprano/piano recital Monday night
Prof. Sarah Meredith sends word of a top-flight music recital with UW-Madison faculty members Mimmi Fulmer, soprano, and Martha Fischer, pianist, visiting for a recital in the Weidner's Fort Howard Hall on Monday (April 21) at 7:30 p.m. Free. They'll also do a master class Tuesday in the Jean Weidner Theatre. We'll have more in our next issue.
Phoenix men: Tang joins the clan
Big news from Athletics today: Tod Kowalczyk's Green Bay men's basketball program has signed a heralded junior-college scorer and rebounder to join the team for fall 2008. He's 6-6, with a great game and a great name: Chop Tang. See http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/041608aaa.html.
