UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 92, April 2, 2008     /     Log Archive

These crazy kids and their April Fools Internet tomfoolery! Even the New York Times fell for it. The prank craze known as RickRolling — which has tricked millions into clicking to clips that turn out to be the 1980s music video of mellow popster Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" — is an actual phenomenon, but the Eastern Washington basketball incident depicted here was a student hoax: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeuEMeg8eQE. The truth is at http://www.khq.com/global/story.asp?s=8079367. As for us, shattered by the discovery that a fine crooner and swell dancer from our youth is today mocked as un-hip, well it's enough to make you haul out the old Flock of Seagulls, Boy George and Cyndi Lauper cassettes for consolation. Here's a brief, bonus edition of campus news:

Students, faculty to perform Ensler play for conference
Give credit to the organizers
First-ever Phoenix Fan Fest is Thursday
Student 'rush' for Spencers
Ticketing/Info Center is now only UPS dropoff

Next chapter of Great Books features Sherman, Turgenev
GMAT-on-wheels
Fourth Estate earns a Saginaw scolding
UW-Madison parody takes on Wisconsin budgeting
Oshkosh student provides tall tale
More LOG on Thursday

Students, faculty to perform Ensler's 'Good Body' for conference
Eve Ensler's play "The Good Body" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday (April 4) and 2 p.m. Saturday (April 5) in the Union's Christie Theater. Part of the statewide Women's Studies Conference, the show is open to the general public as well. Ensler, known for "The Vagina Monologues," uses the piece to explore how diverse women face issues of body image and aging. Strong language and adult themes are present. Credits include student Natalie Bridenhagen and Prof. Laura Riddle as co-directors, and a cast that includes Profs. Riddle, Sarah Detweiler and Illene Noppe, and students Hannah Burmesch, Megan Hedden, Nicole Herr, Erin Le Cloux, Alison Tyler and Ray-Anna Young. Registrations strong for conferences; many pitch in
Prof. Alison Gates, with Prof. Catherine Henze a coordinator of this weekend's conferences at UW-Green Bay, says they expect to top out at more than 200 registrants. In a previous issue, we shared here the list of campus presenters; here's an accounting of behind-the-scenes organizers:

Women's Studies Conference Program Committee
• Prof. Alison Gates
• Helen Klebesadel, UW System WSC Director
• Profs. Angela Bauer-Dantoin, Heidi Fencl, Catherine Henze, Rebecca Meacham, Sarah Meredith, Kim Nielsen and Sandra Stokes, Women's Studies faculty
• Karlyn Crowley and Michelle Tichy, St. Norbert College faculty
• Ruth Homrighaus of Ruthless Editing, Green Bay

LGBTQ Conference Planning Committee
• Prof. Catherine Henze
• Lisa Beckstrand, UW System Inclusivity Initiative director
• Profs. Judy Martin and Jolanda Sallmann
• Jennifer Murray, UW-Milwaukee LGBT Resource Center director
• Brian Stahlkopf, and Jeffrey Willems, UW-Green Bay staff members
• Lynn Johnson and Jamie Karlin (president of SAGA), UW-Green Bay students
• Chris Larson, Holden Village Board treasurer
• Lynn Nash, Positive Voice president

Kassie Van Remortel of the UW-Green Bay Office of Outreach and Extension has also been instrumental in making arrangements for the conferences.

First-ever Phoenix Fan Fest is Thursday... for kids, fans, everyone
Phoenix fans, here's your chance to get autographs, meet the players face-to-face and spend some time with Green Bay student-athletes while having fun at the first Phoenix Fan Fest scheduled for Thursday (April 3) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Kress Event Center. The event is especially intended for elementary and middle school aged kids and their parents, but will be free and open to all. Each Green Bay Athletic team will host an interactive activity for the kids to participate in. Come dunk with Mike Schachtner, shoot threes with Rachel Porath, score soccer goals in the turf gym with the Green Bay men's and women's soccer teams and much more. The event is sponsored by American Family Insurance, Cedar Crest Ice cream and Country Kitchen.

Like magic: Students get 'rush' tickets for Spencers
Let your students know: $10 student rush pricing for UW-Green Bay students has been approved for The Spencers — Theatre of Illusion performance this Friday (April 4) at 7:30 p.m. Cash only, available with a student ID at University Ticketing Services.

The Ticketing & Information Center is now the only UPS drop spot
Due to infrequent use, the UPS drop-box in the Rose/Wood Hall concourse will be removed on April 19. All UPS shipments must now be delivered through the UTIC. But really, why would you go anywhere else? Customer service manager Wayne Walker says they've "got boxes, envelopes and bubble mailers galore; and with complimentary weighing and taping, we'll make sure your package arrives safely with the proper postage. Stop on down today, and have a happy UPS shipment, courtesy of the UTIC."

Next chapter of Great Books series features Sherman on Turgenev
Next Tuesday (April 8) will be the next discussion in the Humanities Studies Great Books series at the Brown County central library. Prof. Heidi Sherman (Humanistic Studies/History) will be leading a discussion of Ivan Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons." The discussions begin at 6:30 pm and are free and open to the public.

GMAT-on-wheels is opportunity for Green Bay students
The GMAT mobile test center is coming to UW-Green Bay from Wednesday, April 16 through Saturday, April 19. Staff member Steven Newton in Career Services notes this provides an opportunity for students applying to graduate school in business to take the exam here in Green Bay. Students who want to find out more about the GMAT, or to register for the GMAT exam at UW-Green Bay, should be directed to http://www.mba.com or 1-800-717-GMAT.

Fourth Estate earns a scolding from Saginaw, Michigan
The editorial page of the Saginaw News found space recently to deliver a sternly worded upbraiding to those reprehensible young journalists at UW-Green Bay's student newspaper, The Fourth Estate, they of Brett Favre hoax fame. The editorial castigated, lashed and, yes, even flayed the 4E for its juvenile trampling of newspaper convention. In what must be regarded as a minor upset, the piece is archived on this newfangled "Internet" thing at http://www.mlive.com/news/saginawnews/index.ssf?/base/news-26/120705962445470.xml&coll=9.

What would Saginaw think of UW-Madison parody on Wisconsin budget?
If they were like us, they'd probably think it's fairly clever. On April 1, the Daily Cardinal student daily published the article "Doyle requests extra decimal point to reduce projected budget deficit." It skewers budget accounting and GOP and Dems alike. Give it a read at: http://www.dailycardinal.com/article/2533.

UW-Oshkosh student provides tall tale for New York Times
A UW-Oshkosh student who reveals the challenges of growing up as an exceptionally tall woman is getting big attention at The New York Times Web site; she'll be on the Today Show next. See http://www.thenorthwestern.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080402/OSH0101/804020486/1128/OSHnews.
