Flags will likely be at half-staff on campus and across Wisconsin this Thursday (April 24) as a mark of respect for Lance Cpl. Dean Opicka, who will be laid to rest that day in his hometown of Casco. The tiny village just 15 miles down Highway 54 from campus has, with neighboring Luxemburg, lost a total of three young Marines in four years to the Iraq War. Cpl. Jesse Thiry and Sgt. Luke Zimmerman were the others. Today's Green Bay Press-Gazette has a moving story of patriotism, sorrow and questions. In campus news today:
• SIFE honors
• Cancelled: Wednesday's Historical Perspectives lecture
• Lao-Hmong migration is topic at UW-Green Bay program
• Sen. Hansen's office hours
• Abbreviated issue - more coming on Tuesday
UW-Green Bay SIFE team earns honor for community outreach
The UW-Green Bay Students In Free Enterprise team again earned honors in the SIFE USA Regional Competition on March 26 in Minneapolis. After presenting a report of its yearlong community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the team earned second runner-up in the overall competition. The community projects focused on financial management and global interdependency, in addition to promoting a greater awareness of how market-based economies function. The Minneapolis event was one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions held across the United States in March and April.
Cancelled: Wednesday's visiting lecture by Edmunds on Native American issues
Illness has forced the cancellation of the Historical Perspectives lecture by visiting professor R. David Edmunds on "The Evolution of Native American Identity." The event had been scheduled for Wednesday in the Union.
Lao-Hmong migration is topic at UW-Green Bay program
The Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration continues with a lecture on Lao-Hmong migration by Prof. Shoua Yang at the UW-Green Bay campus. Yang will speak at 2 p.m. Wednesday (April 23) in the University Union's Christie Theatre. The title of his free lecture is "A Residual Issue of the Cold War: The 8,000 Hmong Lao in Thailand." Prior to the seminar, Yang will attend a luncheon open to all students, faculty and staff at the American Intercultural Center in the main level of the Cofrin Library. The lunch is at noon. Yang is a visiting assistant professor in the Political Science Department at UW-Stevens Point and teaches Southeast Asian Politics, Ethnic Politics in America and other courses. For more information, or to make luncheon reservations, contact Mai Lo in the American Intercultural Department at (920) 465-2720, or by e-mail at lom@uwgb.edu.
Sen. Hansen's office hours
State Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, will hold office hours at the UW-Green Bay campus this Thursday. He says he hopes to hear from students, faculty and staff about their concerns involving higher education, the economy and any other topics. All other constituents also are welcome. Hansen will be available from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday (April 24) in the Heritage Room of the University Union.
Abbreviated issue - more coming on Tuesday
There's plenty more news where this came from. Just not now. Gotta go. We'll be back with a lengthy, jam-packed issue Tuesday afternoon.
