UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 95, April 7, 2008     /     Log Archive

From the AP story on the death of larger-than-life actor Charlton Heston, who embraced political causes but never ran for office: "I've been president of the United States three times," he once joked, mentioning his movie roles. "And chancellor of England, and I ran the French government. And I led the Jews out of Egypt. What more could I want?" Seriously, he continued: "I haven't got (this acting thing) right yet, and I'm not going to quit until I do." He was 84. In real news today:

Receiving Distinguished Alumni Awards will be David T. Muench, a community outreach specialist with EcoEnergy and former community development educator for UW-Extension; and Mary M. Kabacinski, a former teacher who went on to become chief financial officer at School Specialty, Inc., the nation's leading marketer of school supplies. Receiving Outstanding Recent Alumni Awards will be U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Amy Roznowski, a Cobra helicopter pilot who is on active duty and preparing to redeploy to Iraq; and Rachel (Neff) Greenley, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. For details, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/.

Professors seeking donated items for Slovakia trip
Prof. Angela Bauer-Dantoin and a group of students and community members who are heading to Slovakia in May were highlighted as "Helping Hands" in Sunday's Green Bay Press-Gazette. The article profiled photographer Tina Bechtel, who visited Slovakia last year through an international travel course at UW-Green Bay. Bechtel, a former assistant curator for the Lawton Gallery, received special permission to photograph life in three Roma settlements. Her photographic work, "Gypsies (Roma) of Slovakia" is on display at The ARTgarage, 1400 Cedar St., through the rest of the month. The newspaper noted Bauer-Dantoin's efforts to collect donated goods for the Roma people. Bauer-Danton, Prof. Sarah Meredith, a group of nine UW-Green Bay students and three community members are heading back to the settlements for two weeks next month. Read the article at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008804060786.

List of desired supplies
Prof. Bauer-Danton is collecting musical instruments and medical supplies to take to Slovakia. She is looking to take small musical instruments (recorders, harmonicas, tambourines, flutes, etc.), art supplies, large and small paintbrushes, bandages, first-aid tape, over-the-counter medication for adults and children (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.), anti-diarrhea medication, antibiotic ointment, multivitamins and dental supplies (tooth brushes, toothpaste, etc.), latex or vinyl disposable gloves. Drop off donations at her office, LS468, or in the Human Biology Office, LS453. Cash donations will also be gladly accepted for supplies. The UW-Green Bay group is leaving May 22 and returning June 2. For more info, contact Bauer-Dantoin at bauera@uwgb.edu or Meredith at meredits@uwgb.edu.

'Growing UWGB sets early cutoff for applications'

We'll have more details in a future edition, but mark your calendars now for a lecture from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 23, in the Christie Theatre. The speech is part of the Historical Perspectives Lecture Series.

Students needed to review their peer's conduct
The Dean of Students office is looking for some fresh talent to serve on the Peer Conduct Review Board for next fall. A total of 12 students make up three boards that investigate complaints of student misconduct and make recommendations to the Dean of Students Office. Quality candidates should be interested in building fair communities and helping their peers learn from life's mistakes. Common majors who have shown interest in the program are Social Work, Psychology, Human Development, Education and anything pre-law. Please direct students you feel would be good candidates to the Dean of Students website (http://www.uwgb.edu/deanofstudents/pcrb) for applications or contact Mark Olkowski at 465-2152.
