Sorry we’re late. A mix of e-mail trouble, fire drills and procrastination. It’s Tuesday, Aug. 19. Gov. Doyle is in Milwaukee to cut the ribbon on the massive Marquette Interchange project, $800 million and four years in the making. (Warning to travelers: Enjoy it while you can. Next up is the Mitchell Field interchange.) Also in Milwaukee, it’s the Fonz in bronze, with actor Henry Winkler — and Marion Ross and Tom Bosley (Mrs. and Mr. C), Erin Moran (Joanie), Don Most (Ralph) and Anson Williams (Potsie) in attendance — helping unveil what backers insist will be a tourism-boosting downtown statue of his once-cool “Happy Days” character. Aaaaayh! Meanwhile:

Bookmarking the search site
The UW-Green Bay Chancellor Search and Screen Committee has launched its web site dedicated to the latest information on the search for a successor to Chancellor Bruce Shepard, who resigned this summer to become president of Western Washington University. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellorsearch.
Survey: What do YOU think about a new chancellor?
The Search and Screen Committee invites interested campus and community members to contribute to the process via a short, nine-question survey, regardless of whether or not they attended, or plan to attend, any of the public forums. The survey will be online until Sept. 22. Responses may be kept anonymous, and participants may answer any or all of the nine questions. Additional feedback can be left for the search committee by following the link on the site’s toolbar. Visit http://www.uwgb.edu/surveys/TakeSurvey.asp?SurveyID=621lp83Im680I.
Position announcement posted, too
The UW System Board of Regents recently approved the position announcement for the next chancellor. From the first paragraph of that document:
“UW-Green Bay seeks a visionary and effective leader to enhance and further the academic programs and initiatives of a growth-minded institution; support faculty development and aspirations; work with an engaged student body that has a strong work ethic; and collaborate with the UW System as well as citizens, community leaders, tribal nations, and legislators for the advancement of the University and the region.”
Read it all here: http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellorsearch/position/index.html.
Still more public forums planned
There are four more public forums planned at which the Chancellor Search Committee can gather input regarding the qualities and traits desired in the next chancellor. All faculty and staff, and community members, are invited to take part. The sessions are:
• Community Open Forum, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25, at the Brown County Central Library, 515 Pine St., lower level.
• Campus and Community Open Forums, noon to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26, Room 103 of the University Union.
• Community Open Forum, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Brown County Central Library, 515 Pine St., lower level.
Phoenix Bookstore ready to soar, on Aug. 25
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the new Phoenix Bookstore will be up and running on the main level of the University Union next Monday (Aug. 25). Store hours for the remainder of summer are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be extra hours on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to assist returning students.
*******
EZ Book pick-up (the textbook reservation program) will take place in the University Union Alumni Room A on Aug. 28-29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Monday, Sept. 1, from10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Latest NSSE sighting: some engaging results
Students at UW-Green Bay have participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement several times since 2001. We recently received the results from the most recent administration, completed in Spring 2008. Several of the summary files prepared by the NSSE organization area available for you to download from the campus Institutional Research website: www.uwgb.edu/iresearch/NSSE2008.
Yada, yada, yada… and even more Seinfeld
In case you hadn’t heard, a second, late show has been added for Jerry Seinfeld’s Oct. 16 comedy date at UW-Green Bay’s Weidner Center. Tickets, on sale new at the ticketing center in the University Union, are still available. Visit http://www.uwgb.edu/weidner/.
Remembering Boyd ‘Bish’ Coleman
He was a full-time lecturer in Managerial Systems from 1973 to 1981. Before that he was a one-time merchandise buyer who left H.C. Prange to found what was described as the region’s first discount-store chain, Schmitt’s Inc., which eventually was absorbed by the Copps’ Company. News has been received of the death of former UW-Green Bay faculty member Boyd “Bish” Coleman, who passed away Aug. 10 in Madison, at age 83. He is survived by his wife and their four children. Ryan Funeral Home of Madison was in charge of arrangements. In a 1978 feature article in the student Fourth Estate newspaper, Coleman was quoted about bringing a retail business background to his teaching: “When you accept a job, you do your job or else. The business world and the classroom are similar in that way… It’s a good learning experience to know that you have to produce… If a student is not going to do it now, they might not discipline themselves to do it later…”
CSAC clubhouse fundraiser draws to a close — Don’t miss out!
This is the final week to enjoy the summer lunch fundraiser… Take a stroll to Shorewood Golf Course for lunch on Thursday (Aug. 21) between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A portion of any sales is donated to the Classified Staff Advisory Council for professional development funding. Order ahead: http://www.uwgb.edu/shorewood/. Hope to see you there! (“The CSAC wishes to thank those of you who supported the fundraiser this summer.”)
Plan ahead… for Thai, Holiday, India and Caribbean luncheons
It’s billed as a chance to escape from work and pretend that you’re on vacation in the Phoenix Rooms of the University Union. Executive chef Gary Vail has been busy planning this year’s cultural luncheons series for the campus. Mark your calendar to sample some interesting foreign foods:
• Thailand Luncheon, Oct. 3
• Holiday Luncheon, Dec. 11
• India Luncheon, Feb. 6
• Caribbean Luncheon, April 16
Menu details to follow in upcoming issues of this newsletter. Tickets go on sale for the first one starting Sept. 15 at the University and Ticketing Information Center.
Reilly wants Regents to seek more money for UW System growth plan
The UW System Board of Regents meets this week in Madison, and System President Kevin Reilly says he'll ask taxpayers to invest more to continue plans to produce more college graduates. Reilly is recommending the system ask the Legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle for $37.5 million in new tax money and $13.4 million in student fees to support the systemwide Growth Agenda through 2011. A UW System news release has details at http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2008/r080814.htm.
Cap Times editor: UW bashing comes home to roost
The editor emeritus of the online Capital Times blames Rep. Steve Nass and others for making UW-Madison research star Jon Foley feel unwelcome, as Foley took his grants to Minnesota. Fierce postings, on both sides of the argument. See http://www.madison.com/tct/column/300786.
Reilly, Lyall tout UW as national leader in accountability
In 1993, the University of Wisconsin System became the first statewide system of higher education to publish an annual accountability report, focused on consistent measures of access, degree completion, professional preparation, and stewardship of resources. And that’s only the start of the story, write current UW System President Kevin Reilly and his predecessor, Katharine Lyall, in a guest column distributed statewide. It’s in today’s Press-Gazette, at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080819/GPG0706/808190619/1269/GPG06.

Time capsule: How about some UW-Green Bay memorabilia?
An Admissions viewbook (dig those crazy fashions… maybe an ID card (what, didn’t fingerprint technology exist in 2008?)… or maybe a print copy of the Fourth Estate newspaper (news paper?) The Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is soliciting suggestions before they bury a time capsule to be opened in 50 years at their new home at the corner of Broadway and Dousman Streets late this fall. What should be included in the time capsule that represents the local community, the Chamber and its efforts and focus in 2008? -Email llodes@titletown.org with your time capsule suggestions.
If you drive, even a personal vehicle, Driver Authorization Update is required
Anyone driving on University business must be an authorized driver. This policy applies whether one drives a fleet vehicle, a rental vehicle or a personal vehicle while on State business. To obtain authorization, an individual must complete a Vehicle Use Agreement, obtain supervisor’s signature and submit the form to the University Safety and Risk Manager for review and approval. The Vehicle Use Agreement form has been re-formatted to provide efficiencies in managing the driver authorization database. Therefore, effective Thursday, August 21, all individuals seeking driver authorization must use the new Vehicle Use Agreement form — no exceptions.
The Fleet Policy web page www.uwgb.edu/busfin/safetyrisk/fleet/index.htm is being updated and the new Vehicle Use Agreement form will be available for use on Wednesday, August 20. The old forms will be accepted up to Thursday, August 21. This change applies only to individuals who will be seeking driver authorization after August 20. Individuals who are already authorized or have submitted Vehicle Use Agreements prior to August 21 are not affected by this change.
Of special note: Per State policy, students are purged from the authorized driver database on an annual basis. Students (including student employees) will be purged from our database on August 25. All students must submit a new Vehicle Use Agreement each academic year. Faculty and staff who have been authorized to drive in the past do not have to submit a new Vehicle Use Agreement. They remain in our authorized driver database until they leave UWGB employment or until they no long meet minimum driving standards.
