A fishing buddy just showed us a classic business card, imprinted on only a single side with a beautifully detailed walleye and these few words:
Spider Johnson's Guide Service
Upper Red Lake-Waskish, MN
That's all. No phone, fax or cell numbers. No street address. No slogan. Reckon if you want walleyes you drive to northern Minnesota, go to Waskish, ask for Spider and you'll find him. And them. Now that's branding. And this is the LOG:

Report says Obama considering a Friday visit
No confirmation yet from the campaign, but a Green Bay TV station is reporting that Sen. Barack Obama is planning a Friday campaign stop in Green Bay. The station quoted UW-Green Bay officials as saying the new Kress Events Center is among sites under consideration. Formal announcement would come from the campaign; if there's local news to share, we'll relay that ASAP via the LOG.
Photos: 'Dick Bennett Gym' honors a Green Bay legend
Former UW-Green Bay basketball coach Dick Bennett was honored Feb. 7 with announcement the University will name the practice facility at the new Kress Events Center the "Dick Bennett Gym." Bennett coached the Phoenix to three NCAA and two NIT bids in 10 seasons and, later, led the Wisconsin Badgers to a Final Four. For photos and details of last Thursday's Resch Center festivities, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.
Board of Regents OKs more-competitive salaries for UW leaders
"We must have the tools to compete in the national market for the best academic leaders," says UW System President Kevin Reilly. The Board of Regents agreed, and voted Feb. 8 to increase base pay for the next UW-Madison chancellor to between $370,000 and $452,000, a roughly 50 percent increase that would put the new hire in the middle of the pack with peer schools. Conservative Rep. Steve Nass responded by calling the action "immoral and insulting." Journal-Sentinel coverage is at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=716267.
Photo Gallery: the faculty show
This is a true "photo gallery," in that photography intern Matt Robinson spent some time over in the Lawton Gallery documenting the pieces on exhibit in the 35th annual UW-Green Bay faculty art show. The show runs through Feb. 21. Get a preview at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/events/0802artfacultyshow/.
Funeral service for Irene Shewalter
Many retirees and some current employees will fondly recall Irene Shewalter, who passed away Friday in De Pere at the age of 90. Shewalter retired from the University in 1978 after 25 years in state service, the final decade of which was spent as a classified staff member in the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty. She began her UW career in 1953 at the Green Bay center (known affectionately as "Cardboard Tech"), then part of UW-Extension. She maintained campus ties, returning regularly for visits and special events, and served as a Weidner Center volunteer during the 1990s. Visitation will take place Tuesday (Feb. 12) from 10 to 11 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Parish in Allouez, followed by a burial mass. A full obituary is online at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080210/GPG010301/802100756/1212/GPG010301.
Register now for state Women's Studies and LGBTQ conferences here
UW-Green Bay is hosting the UW System Women's Studies and LGBTQ conferences in April. Women's Studies faculty members Alison Gates and Catherine Henze are co-chairing the project. At least 200 attendees from across the state are expected to attend. Theme of the 32nd annual UW System Women's Studies Conference is "Women and the Environment: Literacy, Scientific, and Cultural Perspectives." Theme of the third annual UW System LGBTQ Spring Conference is "LGBTQ Environments: Academia and Beyond." Both conferences take place April 4 and 5 in the University Union. To see conference details and register today, go to http://www.uwgb.edu/outreach/environment.
Open house a success
Ran out of time or we'd have posted here the photos from Friday's big open house over at the newly remodeled Student Services Building. Looked like a nice gathering, and it certainly is a beautiful new space for student services. We'll run the link in our next issue.
Feb. 28 session for supervisors on Family/Medical Leave
It's another in the "Sessions for Supervisors" series, this one scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. in IS 1034 and designed to provide supervisors with a basic understanding of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA). A 30-minute DVD presentation will be provided, illustrating scenarios commonly encountered by supervisors, followed by a Q&A session. Qualifying reasons for FMLA, eligibility requirements, and the length of leave an employee is allowed to take will be addressed, as will the recent expansion of FMLA with additional leave for military families under certain circumstances. You do not need to pre-register for this program... "please just mark your calendar to attend!"
March's program: 'Hiring Practices'
The Feb. 28 FMLA program is part of a yearlong series of free training/professional development offerings for UW-Green Bay faculty and staff. The next program (in March) will be "Hiring Practices" presented by Human Resources. If you have any questions, contact HR at ext. 2390.
Miss the New Employee Orientation Info Session? Key info now online
If you are involved in the hiring and onboarding process for new employees and missed last week's info sessions, there is important information you should know! Human Resources has created a New Employee Online Orientation at (https://www.uwgb.edu/hr/campus/orientation/index.htm) to help new employees learn about employment at UW-Green Bay (this is available for any employee to view).
Also, there is a revised Orientation Checklist at (http://www.uwgb.edu/hr/Documents/NewHire/NEO_Plan.doc) available to help supervisors prepare for a new employee's arrival and cover important points during the first three months of employment.
For a detailed summary of the updated orientation process, please view the following process summaries for Classified (http://www.uwgb.edu/hr/Documents/NewHire/ProcessSummaryClass.doc) and Unclassified (http://www.uwgb.edu/hr/Documents/NewHire/ProcessSummaryUnclass.doc).
If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Human Resources at hr@uwgb.edu or ext. 2390.
On balance, UW-Green Bay had a very good year
The year was the 2006-07 fiscal year. The University's annual report to stakeholders is now online, and it documents progress on a number of fronts, from academic achievement to fundraising, from accreditation to diversity. As a reference work, and a reminder of the year's highlights and challenges, it's worth a look at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/system/AR2007/index.htm.
UW-Green Bay announces Martinez, Steeno as 2008 Hall of Famers
UW-Green Bay will welcome two new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame Friday, Feb. 29. Men's basketball standout John Martinez and women's star Julie Steeno are the 2008 inductees. Martinez helped lead the 1994 NCAA tourney team that upset Cal. The '94 business administration grad is today a manager with the Pepsi Cola Bottling Group in Los Angeles. Steeno is the seventh leading scorer (1,387) and third leading rebounder (889) in Phoenix women's basketball history and led the program to its first-ever national tournament berth. The '82 human development grad is today vice president of healthcare management services for Amerigroup Corporation, the nation's largest Medicaid HMO, in Virginia Beach, Va. To attend the banquet or read more about the honorees, click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-29.htm.
Wounded leader of East Timor once met with students here
Some on campus will have noticed Monday's news out of Dili, East Timor and recognized the name Jose Ramos-Horta. Rebel soldiers shot and critically wounded East Timor's president during a failed coup attempt in the recently independent (from Indonesia) nation. Ramos-Horta, winner of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize, visited UW-Green Bay in April 1999 to speak on "Peacemaking: the Power of Nonviolence." His visit was part of the Contemporary Issues lecture series presented by the student-led Good Times Programming Board.
EAP and 'The Benefits of Therapeutic Massage' this Wednesday
Reminder: The Employee Assistance Program is sponsoring "The Benefits of Therapeutic Massage for Emotional and Physical Wellbeing" by massage therapist Sue Dekeyser this Wednesday (Feb. 13) from noon to 12:30 p.m. in the Counseling and Health Center Conference Room, 1400SS.
Primary turnout will be extremely low on campus
According to the City Clerk's Office, the nearest polling station to campus for the primary election next Tuesday, Feb. 19, will be Holy Cross Parochial School. Some will remember that UW-Green Bay students had a dedicated poll here during the fall 2004 presidential balloting, and turnout was very high. That's why it's good to hear that, while there will be no voting here next week, the polling station for the Nov. 4 general elections will again return to the Office of Residence Life Community Center.
Health perceptions survey
The Human Development program is seeking volunteers ages 40 to 100 years old to participate in the Health Perceptions Survey. Participants will receive a survey in the mail that contains a brief story and questions about the participant's perception of illness symptoms and his or her current health and lifestyle. Contact Dr. Dean VonDras, Human Development Programs, UW-Green Bay at vondrasd@uwgb.edu.
Circle K offers a Valentine's treat
They tell us nothing says "Be Mine, Valentine" like a bag of Puppy Chow candy, sure to appeal to chocolate lovers who don't mind getting white powdered sugar on everything. It says here the Circle K service club will be peddling the stuff at $1/bag in the library alcove both Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 13 and 14) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "Half of the proceeds will be donated to the EC because we couldn't make 20+ batches of Puppy Chow without their facilities and amazing staff!"
Two interesting basketball games
The women's basketball team has two home games this week, and they'd welcome your attendance at either or both. The Phoenix (18-4, 10-1) will try to avenge its only conference loss vs. Valparaiso Thursday night (Feb. 14) at the Kress Events Center. On Saturday, it's a "Pack the House" matinee as Coach Matt Bollant's league leaders host Butler in a game to be carried nationally via ESPNU. See http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/wigb-w-baskbl-body.html.
Phoenix men try to rebound vs. Milwaukee
Following up a solid effort Saturday vs. No. 10 Butler with an 81-64 blowout loss at Cleveland State on Monday night, the UW-Green Bay men's basketball team (13-11, 7-7) will try to right the ship in a key game Saturday (Feb. 16) at UW-Milwaukee. For the latest, http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/021108aaa.html.
Who is Sue Johanson?
If you don't know, you're probably not interested in "Talk Sex With Sue Johanson," a live stage show scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 13) at the Weidner Center, hosted by Campus Life, Good Times Programming and RHAA. She's a national cable personality who hosts her own advice show. For tickets or info, http://www.uwgb.edu/weidner/.
Parkside search groups have familiar names
The UW System has announced the makeup of the 19-member search committee seeking a new chancellor at UW-Parkside campus. The Regents subcommittee in charge has some Green Bay ties. Alumna Eileen Connolly-Keesler is a 1982 UW-Green Bay grad, and Judy Crain is a former Trustee. For the news release, http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2008/r080211.htm.
UW-Madison's WARF sues Intel over patents
The University of Wisconsin-Madison's research arm has sued computer chip maker Intel claiming the company violated the university's patents in making the popular Core 2 Duo processor. The federal lawsuit, filed last week, alleges the technology was created by researchers at the university and Intel should have been licensed by WARF (the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation).
