UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 70, February 14, 2008     /     Log Archive

This is the LOG newsletter, an in-house publication for faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. This edition is also being broadcast to student e-mail accounts. It is also (we hope) the final in this week's series of Obama-related updates. Here goes:

Final info, advice in advance of Friday's rally
'Overflow' plan
Photos: Tickets go fast
Big media... passing time... faculty political experts
Cost recovery

Free advice, and one last disclaimer on Friday's rally
Campus and community friends of UW-Green Bay are reminded to arrive early and bring plenty of patience and good cheer if they are attending Friday's rally. Why? The brand-new Kress Events Center has already hosted a sold-out Switchfoot/RelientK concert and big women's basketball crowds... but the Obama rally is something different entirely. Crowd control, event management, ticket-distribution (a source of frustration to many, earlier in the week) and even parking are entirely the responsibility of the Barack Obama Campaign, with event security under the direction of the U.S. Secret Service. Additionally, while paid admission and ticket counts for University-controlled events are precisely monitored, the Campaign's free ticket distribution and e-ticketing almost certainly rely on a degree of guesswork related to no-shows and "overflow" seating. (See next item on "overflow.") That said, doors open at 3 p.m. with the candidate's appearance scheduled for 5 p.m.

Here's the plan on overflow seating
If attendance exceeds the capacity of the Events Center — about 4,000 fixed seats and room for perhaps another 700 on the floor — the Campaign says it will direct later arrivals to overflow seating in the "old" Phoenix Sports Center gym. Again, Campaign organizer Lindsay Scola reminds the public there is no reserved seating and the e-tickets will carry the same admission privileges as the pre-printed tickets. As for the designated overflow area, the Campaign promises an audio feed of Obama's remarks, and says it is expected the candidate would make a stop there to thank supporters.

Photo page: Tickets go fast... and (today, at least) smoothly
Big excitement at the Kress Events Center, and absolutely no problems, with ticket distribution Thursday morning for Friday's Barack Obama campaign rally on campus. The last ticket was gone well before noon. Hats off to the student Dems and others who assisted. Photos at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

Big media entourage... how to pass time... and faculty political experts
We're told two motor coaches carrying the national media will roll onto campus Friday afternoon as part of the campaign caravan. Even by modern standards, that's a big pack. Scan the media risers for recognizable faces... Wondering what you'll do for several hours at the Kress waiting for the appearance? Canned music is likely a given, and concession stands will be open if you want to catch a drink or snack... Airing on public radio today (Thursday) was a piece on the presidential candidates featuring Prof. Terri Johnson, political science, and students Aaron Frailing and Will Johnson. In addition, Johnson will be quoted in Friday's Press-Gazette, and she and colleague Michael Kraft have appeared on just about every local news outlet this past week, sharing thoughts on the race and the importance of the Wisconsin primary.

Cost recovery
Political campaigns rent campus facilities or collaborate with student organizations under the same cost-recovery policies that apply to any outside users, with charges fully covering incidental expenses. Public funds are not used for these expenses.
