UW-Green Bay launches new lab for toddler-development study
Prof. Jennifer Zapf, Human Development, is opening the doors on the University's new Language Learning Lab and the first in-depth local study of how children learn the meaning of words. Zapf is inviting parents and their children ages 18 months through 3 years to assist. "At birth, babies neither understand nor produce language, yet within three years they are nearly proficient in their native language," says Zapf, who formerly assisted at Indiana University's renowned cognitive development laboratory. "It's amazing, and science is still only beginning to understand how this happens." For more, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-32.htm.

Zapf seeks campus, community help in recruiting participants
Director Jennifer Zapf is asking UW-Green Bay employees and returning adult students with young children to consider a visit to the new Language Learning Lab. Participation is easy, with only a single 30- to 45-minute session in which the parent will gently guide his or her child through a few simple play exercises. Zapf and/or one of her five student research assistants will observe. To learn more, contact Zapf at MAC Hall C310; email zapfj@uwgb.edu, phone 920-465-2490. Parents can sign up online at the project website, http://www.uwgb.edu/learnlab.

A Leap Day discussion: 'Critical Thinking and Interdisciplinarity'
The Instructional Development Council invites all faculty and staff to an open discussion of Craig Nelson's 1999 essay "On the Persistence of Unicorns: The Trade-Off between Content and Critical Thinking Revisited," which makes some interesting suggestions about the significance of interdisciplinarity. The discussion will take place in the Union's 1965 Room on Friday, Feb. 29, from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Nelson's essay is available on electronic reserve (under David Voelker) and is accessible at: http://ereserve.uwgb.edu.ezproxy.uwgb.edu:2048/misc/misclist.html. Please address questions to the discussion's moderator, David Voelker (Humanistic Studies and History) at voelkerd@uwgb.edu.

UW-Green Bay's Family Weekend begins Friday
Faculty and staff families are invited, along with students' families, to participate in the 2008 UW-Green Bay Family Weekend, Friday through Sunday (Feb. 22-24). Events include faculty lectures and mini sessions, Lambeau Field tours and a men's basketball game, among other activities. For a complete list of events and registration information, visit http://www.uwgb.edu/stulife/funstuff/specialevents/familyweekend/schedule.asp.

Social Work students schedule panel discussion on immigration
Jessica Derenne of the student Social Work Club notifies us of what promises to be a vigorous debate: a panel discussion on immigration called "Go Back to Where You Came From?" The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Union's Phoenix Rooms AB. She says panelists will be Dan Wadle of Citizen Action, radio talker Jerry Bader of WTAQ, Jon Hayden of the College Republicans, Barbara Pfarr of the social justice advocacy group WISDOM, the president of Casa Hispana and attorney Tim Nixon. Questions? Contact Derenne at derejr20@uwgb.edu.

101 photos of Obama Day
Actually, we're just shy of 101, but this week's photo gallery has an abundance of striking images from last Friday's Barack Obama rally at the new Kress Events Center: crowd shots, the media swarm, students greeting the candidate. Look for faces you know — yourself, friends or students — at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.

Doyle sings praises of Phuture Phoenix to Obama
Heard backstage before Barack Obama's public appearance Friday at the Kress Events Center: In introducing Bruce and Cyndie Shepard to Obama, Gov. Jim Doyle described the success of UW-Green Bay's Phuture Phoenix program. Gov. Doyle told Obama that Phuture Phoenix reaches out to middle-school students and that the governor patterned his Wisconsin Covenant program, a plan to increase access to a UW education, after Phuture Phoenix.

Video at Press-Gazette, YouTube
The Green Bay Press-Gazette is moving toward more video. Their Obama at UW-Green Bay coverage reflects that, at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080215/VIDEO0303/80215210.

You can also get the flavor of the event by checking out a couple of short YouTube videos of the candidate on stage at the Kress — one from a front-row, standing-room perspective, another from farther away: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PwCRtiv56n0 or http://youtube.com/watch?v=IPrH2_PdoiM.

Hildebrand shares a little Wisconsin Primary analysis with the Brits
Scott Hildebrand, senior executive assistant to the chancellor and a longtime Wisconsin political observer as former head of the Press-Gazette's Madison bureau, wrote a guest column for the esteemed news and political publication, The Guardian of London. In it, he shared some thoughts on the Wisconsin Primary, present and past. The piece is posted at http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/scott_hildebrand/2008/02/banking_on_cheeseheads.html.

Were they booing? Or saying 'Bruuuuuuuce'?
Finally... Barack Obama briefly acknowledged his hosts — the University and Chancellor Bruce Shepard — during his remarks. At the mention of the Chancellor's name, some students in the near-capacity crowd responded with the light-hearted and by-now-traditional call of "Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuce." Obama good-naturedly commented by saying he hoped they were saying "Bruce," not "boo."

Women's basketball team hitting high gear
A fine college basketball team is one that gets better as the season progresses, and the Phoenix women (20-4, 12-1) are doing just that. UW-Green Bay yielded 90 points at Valparaiso earlier this year in the team's only Horizon League loss, but clamped down in last Thursday's rematch at the Kress, winning 65-44. Also of note:

• Saturday's 84-59 win vs. Butler gave the Green Bay women their ninth consecutive 20-win season.

• The crowd of 3,321 for the nationally cablecast (ESPNU) game set an on-campus attendance record for the program.

• The program has again been assured of another winning season; the 31-year winning streak is third longest among actives. UW-Green Bay has not had a losing season in women's basketball since its formative years (1976-77). Only Louisiana Tech and Tennessee have longer streaks.

• Junior guard Rachel Porath earned her third Horizon player of the week honor this season, with 19 points and 12 boards in one game, and 6-of-7 three-point shooting in the other.

Best of luck, Phoenix swimmers
The four-day, 2008 Horizon League Championship meet gets under way Wednesday (Feb. 20) at Cleveland State for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. The Phoenix women are taking aim on their fourth straight league title. The men are working toward their first title since 2002.

Men face a top MAC team in Saturday's BracketBuster
On Saturday night (Feb. 23), the Green Bay men will play Western Michigan (14-10, 8-3 in the Mid-America Conference) at the Resch Center. The pairing was announced only recently as part of the ESPN BracketBusters promotion that matches so-called "mid-major" teams for a late-season weekend of non-conference competition. See http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/wigb-m-baskbl-body.html.

Reminder: Get your free tix by Wednesday
Deadline for getting two tickets each to the academic excellence night game (Phoenix men vs. UIC) is Wednesday (Feb. 20). Details at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive39/2008feb15.htm#academic.

More puppy chow for sale
This week, it's the Sexuality and Gender Alliance having a bake sale, promising "Delicious Puppy Chow and other delectable baked goods!" They'll have a booth near the Garden Café both Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 19 and 20) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

'Technical colleges gain as economy suffers'
That's the headline over Monday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story highlighting the fact that, in the last 30 years, the biggest enrollment increases for Wisconsin technical colleges have coincided with downturns in the state's economy: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=719113.

Back in service: PeopleSoft Shared Financial System
The UW System PeopleSoft Shared Financial System (SFS) upgrade involving project/grant reporting has been completed ahead of schedule. PeopleSoft SFS is now fully functional and ready for use. An e-mail will be sent to campus users regarding the new log-on process and the small change when entering a purchase order that includes project/grant coding.

Governor seeks applicants for Regents nontraditional student spot
There is one appointment open for the Board of Regents, as nontraditional student Thomas Shields will be vacating his seat. See http://www.dailycardinal.com/article/2004.

Reminder: Thursday's downtown lecture is for the birds
At noon Thursday (Feb. 21) in Suite 110 of the Baylake Bank City Center, 301 N. Adams St., "A Backyard Winter Oasis for Feeding Birds" is the topic for NAS adjunct assistant professor Vicki Medland. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-30.htm.

Reminder: The topic is Putin
A forum dedicated to Russian President Vladimir Putin runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday (Feb. 22) in MAC Hall 103, with discussion led by Profs. Heidi Sherman (Humanistic Studies and history) and Katia Levintova (Public and Environmental Affairs and political science). Details at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive39/2008feb15.htm#discuss.
