UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 66, February 6, 2008     /     Log Archive

Latest update from the Milwaukee area is still five-foot drifts and up to 15 inches of accumulation. When it comes to weather the last few years, it seems they often have had the worst of it, yet Green Bay has the national reputation. Amazing what two lousy inches during the Seahawks game, or a 20-below title game once every four decades, can do for you. In news today:

UW System floats idea of 'dual transcripts' for grads
University of Wisconsin System grads might soon have two transcripts to show potential employers. They'd still have the traditional kind with classes and grades. But a second one would describe the student's extracurricular involvement, internships, etc. President Kevin Reilly will propose the idea at this week's Regents' meeting in Madison. p> See http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/W/WI_SECOND_TRANSCRIPT_WIOL-?SITE=WIMAD&SECTION=HOME.

Regents say leaders' salaries need to rise
Starting with the search for a new chancellor at the UW's flagship institution in Madison — and the perceived need to boost the current salary by $100,000 or more to make it competitive — the Board of Regents this week will discuss the possibility of a salary range change for several executive level positions. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=714478.

As always, catch the excitement on Regent TV
The UW System Board of Regents will be webcast this Thursday (Feb. 7) from 10 a.m. to noon and Friday (Feb. 8) from 9 a.m. to noon. Don't miss the halftime show (Tom Petty again); with Curt Gowdy and Al DeRogatis calling the action, "brought to you in living color," at http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings.

Photos: Chili contest's top dogs
Andy Stimpson's "Wild Dog Chili" took first place among lunch-hour voters at Monday's 15th annual Chili Cookoff at the Union. Second went to a ringer, Chef Gary Vail, for his "Traditional Pork Chili Verde." Third place was "Surplus Chili" from the Counseling and Health Center. On Saturday morning (Feb. 9) there will be visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Hope United Church of Christ, 12th & Michigan, Sturgeon Bay. The funeral is at 11 am. An obituary is now online at http://www.forbesfuneralhome.com/KokAnne.html.

Man bites dog: Nobel prof may leave Arizona for Wisconsin
In a switch from the usual tale of Sun Belt states poaching faculty from low-paying Wisconsin, Jonathan Overpeck, a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize-winner for his U.N. climate-change report, is a finalist for the position of director of the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison. Maybe Wisconsin's leadership in environmental issues is a plus. See http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/223652.

'Flu-like' illnesses are on the rise; 10 ways to reduce your risk
It seems that there is an increasing incidence of "flu-like" illness throughout the state. Student Health Services notes that influenza is a viral respiratory illness causing symptoms more severe than the "common cold." You catch it by coming in contact with a flu virus directly....when people cough and sneeze or indirectly from towels, telephones, dishes, glasses and toothpaste tubes that were used by an infected person.

Ten things you can do to decrease your risk of catching the Flu:
    • Get the "Flu Shot" — The "flu shot" is still available in the Counseling and Health Center.
    • Avoid crowds.
    • Wash your hands often.
    • Avoid rubbing your eyes and touching your nose and mouth.
    • Use disposable tissues.
    • Do NOT smoke and avoid smoky environments.
    • Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses (or one 64-oz. glass) of water each day.
    • Eat a well-balanced diet including fruits and vegetables.
    • Get adequate rest: 6 to 8 hours/night.
    • Exercise at least 3 to 5 times per week.

If that doesn't work...
Ten ways to care for yourself if you should become ill with the Flu:
    • Stay home to decrease spread of the disease.
    • Rest.
    • Increase your fluid intake — Gatorade, water, juice and fluids with calories.
    • Eat nutritious foods even though your appetite will be decreased.
    • Use a humidifier to help decrease congestion and cough.
    • Take acetaminophen for aching and fever.
    • Avoid over-the-counter cold medications as they may delay the recovery process.
    • Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing; use disposable tissue.
    • Wash your hands frequently.
    • Avoid smoking and use of alcohol.

Don't know about free samples, but 'Therapeutic Massage' is EAP topic
The Employee Assistance Program is sponsoring the program "The Benefits of Therapeutic Massage for Emotional and Physical Wellbeing" by registered massage therapist Sue Dekeyser on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from noon to 12:30 in the Counseling and Health Center Conference Room, Student Services Building Room 1400.

Final, final call on nominating Green Bay student stars for 'Posters'
Posters in the Rotunda: The deadline for submissions has been extended to 4 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 7). Help us keep alive our streak of sending some of the best undergraduate presenters in the UW System to this annual event. The nomination process requires only a very brief (50 word) abstract. Details at http://www.uwgb.edu/research/. Contact Lidia Nonn in the Institute for Research at ext 2565 or nonnl@uwgb.edu or Graduate Student Assistant Casey Gawien at ext. 2784 (gawienc@uwgb.edu) with questions.

UW-Green Bay has chance at national-caliber upset vs. No. 10 Butler
The Butler Bulldogs (19-2) are ranked No. 10 in the country in the latest AP poll. Only one other time has a team ranked as high (Michigan State in December 2005) come into Green Bay to play the Phoenix men. Hopes are high for an upset when Green Bay (12-9, 6-5) plays Butler at 7 p.m. this Saturday (Feb. 9) at the Resch. Tickets are reported to be moving well.

*****

Reminder on Dick Bennett Night: Actually, it's being called "Throwback Night," with $10 adult tickets. Dick Bennett, super-successful coach of the Phoenix from 1985 through 1995, will be acknowledged at this Thursday's Phoenix-Valpo game at the Resch. For info, visit http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/.

Journal Sentinel column cites Dick Bennett as class act
Totally coincidental with Thursday's "Dick Bennett Night" at the Phoenix basketball game, the Journal Sentinel's Michael Hunt fired off a column today (Feb. 6) decrying notoriously bad-mannered coaches Bill Belichick and Bobby Knight. Then he cited the anti-Knight: former UW-Green Bay and Badger coach Dick Bennett. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=715107.

Weidner audience hears of Woodruffs' struggles after blast, brain injury
ABC news anchor Bob Woodruff has had a grueling journey back from a roadside bomb that took part of his skull and nearly his life. His wife, best-selling author and brain/trauma-treatment advocate Lee Woodruff, spoke Tuesday (Feb. 5) at the Weidner Center as part of the Bellin LifeLines series. For a newspaper recap, http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080206/GPG0101/802060666/1207/GPGnews.

Last call for anti-cancer Daffodil Days — deadline is this week
Please remember that this noon Friday (Feb. 8) is the deadline for letting members of the Daffodil Days team know you're interested in having flowers delivered to you the week of March 10. (And helping the American Cancer Society.) Need a reminder on the details? http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/logarchive/logarchive39/2008jan28.htm#daffodil

Sodexho chefs create Chicago buzz... and prepare for German luncheon
Haven't bought your ticket yet? The Union informs us the last day to buy a German Luncheon ticket is next Tuesday. Incidentally, two of our Sodexho chefs' recipes were featured at the Sodexho Symposium in Chicago this past week, and were described as "the buzz of the conference." At the German Luncheon on Friday, Feb. 15, one of the door prizes will be a cookbook with these award-winning recipes in it. Also, faculty member David Coury will be presenting a slide show on his German travels. If you lost your invitation, go to http://www.uwgb.edu/tickets/assets/images/German%20Luncheon.pdf.

Blame for the current budget shortfall
The editorial page of the Wisconsin State Journal, the more conservative of Madison's two daily newspapers, criticizes state leadership for building budgets that — compared to those in other states — are too susceptible to economic downturns. See http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/opinion/271118.

State Law Reminder: Sexual Assaults
All employees are required by law to report knowledge of sexual assaults on campus. The Wisconsin law states, "...any person employed at an institution or center who witnesses a sexual assault or receives a report from a student enrolled in the institution or center that the student has been sexually assaulted shall report to the dean of students of the institution..." This does not mean that you have to violate any confidences or provide names. It does mean that incidents are to be reported to the Dean of Students, ext. 2152.

Another issue Thursday afternoon
Didn't see your submission here? Sorry, look for it in our next edition, Thursday the 7th.
